Power Mac G5 :: Not Respond To Shutdown Or Restart Commands
Oct 6, 2007
I have had this problem for the last year but have worked around it by manually shutting down the system. My mac will not shutdown on command or restart during a program update or by going to the apple and trying g to restart. I have tried on numerous attempts to find a related topic but there is none to my knowledge.
Information:
Powermac G5 2.0 dual
Mac OS X (10.4.10)
3.5 gigs mem
when occurs a suspension of hard drive activity, manually or after a period of inactivity, this suspension seems to be incomplete (a ventilator continue to run) therefore my mac (power-mac G5, OS 10.4.11) is unable to restart, no possible action from the keyboard (I must shut down and restart)
Info: PowerMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.4), & PowerBook (10.3.9)
I have a '08 MBP that has the spinning beach ball showing up in all the apps during use and everything runs slower.Web pages take 5-10 seconds to load.Lightroom photos take 5-10 seconds to load. Commands and mouse selections take 4-5 seconds to respond. It slows down even more with an external monitor being used. The fan runs high 85% of the time.
Hard drive was replaced with an SSD about 2 years ago, which calm HD noise. The HD has 15.5 GB left right now, but the beach ball problem has been there even with half the HD full. This issue occurs even with only 1 app running. For instance, I'll shut all apps except one application, and it still drags, whether that one app be Safari or LR.
I realize the MBP is older, but it used to be very responsive with the same apps. Never used to see the beach ball during app usage, only at startup of app if anytime.
I believe the RAM is maxed out for what this machine can handle at 4GB, but again, the system didn't slow down before. I believe the problem may be some processes running in the background that are dragging down everything, but not sure what to look for.

I have a macbook pro with Mac OS X 10.5.8 with a 2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Recently I've been having a problem with my computer when applications would randomly stop to respond for a few seconds, until after a while they wouldn't start again and I'd have to restart it. I don't know what to do. I'm a fairly new Apple user.
Whenever I open my mac mini it comes up with the same message "You need to restart your computer hold down the power button or press restart" in four different languages.
I just started having some problems with my late 2006 24" iMac and they're still happening after updating to 10.5.7. I think the problem centers around Front Row because Disk Utility reports disk permission errors related to Front Row. Repairing permissions is reported as successful but the problem still persists. For whatever reason Front Row stopped working the other day. Nothing (Command-Escape, Rowmote ln my iPod Touch, etc...) would get it to launch. I tried reinstalling Front Row and no dice.
Then yesterday I had an instance where my iMac wouldn't restart of shut down. I was forced to hold the power button down to fix it. It happened again today. I couldn't restart or shutdown but everything else seemed to work except Front Row and there was a spinning beachball when I moved the mouse cursor to the top right-hand corner of the screen (where some of the menu items are). Before forcing a reboot by pressing the power button this time I thought to check the Console. Here's what I saw, essentially repeating, over and over:.....................
My PowerMac G5 won't recognize the display most of the time, and when it does, the USB keyboard and mouse are not recognized, so I can't communicate with the computer.
So my Mac Pro (2008, 2.8ghz quad core) won't restart or shut down. It powers up just fine and has no other issues. If I want to restart it, then my only option is to hold down the power button. Here's a console log any ideas where the problem is?
my mac pro 8 core intermittently will not shut down or turn off. Happens about 20% time. When I tell it to shut down, the finder will quit, finder menu goes away, the dock will stay on the screen and the computer will not turn off. This happened right after I used bootcamp to install win 7 on a dedicated HHD. I was hoping upgrading to 10.6.3 will fix, but the problem still happens about 20% of times. I'm willing to re-format and re-install snow leopard if thats what it takes
My MacBook pro (15" unibody, non-removable battery) will not turn on. The battery claims to be fully charged. The computer will not respond to the power button in any way. I had turned it on previously by draining the battery completely of any charge (draining power, then pressing and holding down power button for 60 seconds). When this occurred the computer booted up and ran fine. However, when I closed the lid, it turned off immediately, never to return. I'm wondering if this is a problem with the battery, or if it's a problem with the logic board.
i am a teacher in a school where we have been told that every student must shut down each MacBook or iMac when finished. It is not unusual for 6-8 classes a day to do this. I have said putting the MacBooks to sleep would be better for them. Some of the laptops are taking 5 minutes to restart. Can't find data from Apple to support my concerns.
It's been happening for a while now and I had hoped 10.5.3 would fix. When I choose to restart or shutdown, 90% of the time it hangs on grey screen after logging out and I have to hold down power button to shutdown. No apps hanging. Also have problem where when I open the cover to bring my MBA out of standby mode, I'll be presented with the logon screen. I'll type my password and my screen goes blank like it's gone back to sleep but the power light is fully lit. Have to close cover, wait till it goes on standby, then open cover to bring up password logon again. Should I reinstall OS X again?
I installed Windows 7 on my iMac, and was wondering if there is a way to stop Windows from being the main OS that the computer defaults to on a restart/shutdown. I'd like OS X to be the default OS.
I'm unable to shut down or restart my Macbook Pro (10.6.2) the problem only occurs when I have two users logged in. I type username and password as requested and hit shutdown or return and it just does nothing, the username and password box remains on the screen. I have just run Disk Warrior through the machine to no avail.
Is is possible to prevent users to restart/shutdown a computer from the Apple menu in Mac OSX? Is it possible to create some kind of a special group that will have rights to restart/shutdown computer? I have a mac here with many users. From time to time people restart the computer without any particular reason disturbing work of others. I need to find a way to prevent user from doing it deliberately.
i buy Apple Macbook pro 13 inches and whenever i try to off it or restart it then i do not turn off,a gray screen comes and a circle start moving nothing more and then i hold power button to off it,but this is not the proper way to shutdown i am afraid if i daily use this method of shutdown then i lost my data?
Can someone help me? My imac is unable to shutdown or restart. I've tried to do a permissions check and it didn't help idk what to do. And it takes forever to start up occasionally it won't start up help me! My imac has a 2.8 ghz intel core 2 duo with 4 gb of memory and 500 gb hard drive. I'm doing this from my iPhone because safari is not working.
whenever I use my macbook for some reason my MBP will hang on shut down when I use it for a while, and I have to do a hard shut down. but after I do the hard shut down I can restart it after that and it will be at the normal time.
Could it some how be related to my bell internet stick or extended time with out shutting down( 1-2 days on average)?
I couldn't eject external disk, searching on internet followed a suggestion to delete com.apple...trash.plist in home folder library/preferences.still didn't work and I restart the computer and it worked. I can eject the external disk. I continued browsing the internet for several hours. And when I wanted to shutdown I clicked the apple menu choose shutdown nothing came up, no dialog box. I tried the control+alt+command+eject didn't work either.
I recently noticed that when I shutdown/restart my MBP, i get stuck in a gray screen with spining wheel. I can't remember if and what i instaled, but I know that this problem happens when I open up ITunes and keep showing up even when I close/force quit manually ITunes.
I have been unable to shutdown or restart my MBP mid 2012 retina (2.6 GHz Intel Core i70, other than by holding down the power button. I've tried, (safe mode, restore, repair permissions reset PVRAM. etc). I finally got it to shutdown regularly by eliminating all Divx software on my computer (no easy task), but shutdowns and restarts still hang an unusually long time, about 15 seconds.
I send console information just before my last BOOT_TIME to see if any process in the time after restart command and boot would give any hints. Here are the entries, and there appear to be some problems but I cannot interpret them. I have an external WD passport drive connected (which I can eject before restarting with no noticeable effect, and a USB hub, which I also disconnect to no effect).

I have an issue with my 13" Macbook pro mid 2010 OSX 10.9.3. It won't boot after restart, but boots normaly after shutdown and start again.
Few months ago my primary sdd Corsair hard disk (I have 2 hdds. Replaced the original with the CD-rom) which I installed 2 years ago, stopped working. Gave the macbook to authorised service provider in my country and they said I need a new hdd and a new hard drive cable. The ssd was still under warranty, so Corsair replaced it with a new one. They gave me SATA3 instead of SATA2 (which at first I didn't noticed). Later they said they don't have SATA2 anymore. Also replaced the broken cabel.
Now it's working. If you start it after normal shutdown, it boots normally. But if you restart it it won't boot at all. The apple keep spinning and the forbidden sign appears. I tried PRAM and SMC reset. Nothing
What should I do? Can the use of SATA3 instead of SATA2 hdd lead to some issues with my macbook? I can try to find and buy new SATA2 sdd hdd but they are expensive and I'm not sure it will fix the restarting issue.
I'm a rather new Mac user (it's been about 6 months since I bought my new aluminum iMac). Lately, I've been experiencing difficulties in shutting down my system, or even restarting it. I should probably note that I'm using 10.5.2 Sometimes, when I try to perform a system shutdown/restart, the OS gets to a point where only my desktop is shown but nothing happens (occasionally the beach ball keeps rolling, but not always).
At that point, (as far as I know) there's nothing I can do to restart/shutdown the system, besides pressing the "power" button for several seconds until the power goes down. When similar things happened on my old XP machine, I would just use CTRL ALT DEL and force quit all applications - until shutdown succeeds. There was never a scenario where I needed to cut the power in order to get the system to shut down. On OS X when this situation occurs, the CMD ALT ESC combo doesn't seem to work.
if this kind topic has been discussed before, i just have no time to check. So i need your help ASAP.So yes i have bootcamp'ed my macbook to windows 7 34bit. And i think i made a mistake during installing it.Well when given the partition, it was 4 partitions , i chose bootcamp partition, but unfortunately it cant be installed on it, so i tried to format the bootcamp partition, and it's ok, so i have done it.But the problem is, i couldn't get into the mac whenever i restart or shutdown and turn on back.
