Mac Pro :: Improper Shutdown 3.1 (2008) On Games And On Sleep Mode?
Nov 21, 2010my mac pro does a Improper shutdown on games and shutdown on sleep mode. I have made all the reset (PRAM and SMC). I run on OS10.6.5. I have tried two different video cards (8800GT and HD 4870) same crash here. The apple hardware test find nothing. So now I'm thinking that it's probably the power supply.

May 30, 2009I just started having some problems with my late 2006 24" iMac and they're still happening after updating to 10.5.7. I think the problem centers around Front Row because Disk Utility reports disk permission errors related to Front Row. Repairing permissions is reported as successful but the problem still persists. For whatever reason Front Row stopped working the other day. Nothing (Command-Escape, Rowmote ln my iPod Touch, etc...) would get it to launch. I tried reinstalling Front Row and no dice.
Then yesterday I had an instance where my iMac wouldn't restart of shut down. I was forced to hold the power button down to fix it. It happened again today. I couldn't restart or shutdown but everything else seemed to work except Front Row and there was a spinning beachball when I moved the mouse cursor to the top right-hand corner of the screen (where some of the menu items are). Before forcing a reboot by pressing the power button this time I thought to check the Console. Here's what I saw, essentially repeating, over and over:.....................

I know how to mount a volume by its disk identifier (e.g. disk0s3), but it may change after a reboot. Thus a wrong volume may be ejected.

May 9, 2012I decided not to use just one partition with my disk because i wanted to separte important documents from the OS and apps so reformated my disk with 2 partitions 1 for OS and apps and one for docs. I also wanted to keep the docs partition secure so it was my intention to use filevault... however it learned that file vault would only work on my whole disk and not on a sigle volume. At least thats the only option i get when i go to "Turn on FileVault" in the Security and Privacy of system preferences. So what i tried next was to reformat the "docs" partition i have created using the Mac OS extended (journaled) encrypted option. This option seemed to work but after formating the partition, I could not mount the volume.
Question is: what is the best way for what i am trying to do and how to do it.
a) is there a way to use FileVault on a single volume instead of the whle disk?
b) alternatively, how to format an encrypted partition and mount it?

OS X :: Volume Settings Not Remembered At Shutdown
Mar 20, 2010When I boot up my mac the volume settings are not preserved. The volume is always set to 50% of the max volume when I boot up. I've run repair permissions and Onyx, but this did fix anything. Is it time to reinstall Snow Leopard? I am hoping my time machine backup doesn't remember these obscure settings or problem files.

Apr 1, 2010my mac pro 8 core intermittently will not shut down or turn off. Happens about 20% time. When I tell it to shut down, the finder will quit, finder menu goes away, the dock will stay on the screen and the computer will not turn off. This happened right after I used bootcamp to install win 7 on a dedicated HHD. I was hoping upgrading to 10.6.3 will fix, but the problem still happens about 20% of times. I'm willing to re-format and re-install snow leopard if thats what it takes

Mar 13, 2007I have my Mac setup so that the OS is on one hard drive and the Users directory is on another. This setup has worked fine without any problems for the last four months.Though over the last two weeks I've been getting kernel panics (the grey curtain, telling you to restart) frequently. Some days I have been having as many as three or four, other days it's fine.The kernel panics don't appear to form any sort of pattern, they have occurred when the machine is idle, when shutting down, waking up from standby etc

MacBook :: Is Okay To Repeatedly Shutdown / Restart
Sep 30, 2010i am a teacher in a school where we have been told that every student must shut down each MacBook or iMac when finished. It is not unusual for 6-8 classes a day to do this. I have said putting the MacBooks to sleep would be better for them. Some of the laptops are taking 5 minutes to restart. Can't find data from Apple to support my concerns.

When I choose to restart or shutdown, 90% of the time it hangs on grey screen after logging out and I have to hold down power button to shutdown. No apps hanging. Also have problem where when I open the cover to bring my MBA out of standby mode, I'll be presented with the logon screen. I'll type my password and my screen goes blank like it's gone back to sleep but the power light is fully lit. Have to close cover, wait till it goes on standby, then open cover to bring up password logon again. Should I reinstall OS X again?

Hardware :: External HDD Refusing To Mount - Volume Needs Repair
Jan 22, 2008Last night I encountered a problem with my seagate FreeAgent external HD/D. I right-clicked on the desktop icon to eject it as per usual and once the icon had vanished I pulled out the USB cable. However, I then got a message saying that I didn't eject the device properly and might have lost data, etc. When I plugged the external drive in this morning I found that it wouldn't mount. I am in a state of panic at the moment because it is almost 150gb of data that I really did not want to lose! I read in one of the previous threads that this is a common problem amongst macs but I wasn't able to discern if this was a permanent error and if it means my drive is shafted. I ran disk utility and this is what it came up with:

Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid node structure
Invalid B-tree node size
Invalid node structure
Invalid B-tree node size
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked

I tried to repair it using disk utility but it wasn't able to do it. I am now using the demo of Data Rescue II to do a thorough scan which will take several hours but I'm wondering what options I have. Are there any other mac tools I can use? I am a total newbie when it comes to macs having only made the transition from PC to Mac several months ago and I don't know what tools I can utilize to fix this problem, if it even can be fixed.

May 9, 2012The only other volume on the disk does mount, and when starting from this second volumes, the primary volume does mount.. From other startup volumes on my second internal HD, the volume does mount. Disc utility repair, TechToolPro, and DiskWarrior all OK.No Menu Bar on Finder, can't access files from Finder icon in Dock. Safari won't open but Firefox OK. Tried zapping PRAM, repairing permissions.

Mar 31, 2009I couldn't eject external disk, searching on internet followed a suggestion to delete com.apple...trash.plist in home folder library/preferences.still didn't work and I restart the computer and it worked. I can eject the external disk. I continued browsing the internet for several hours. And when I wanted to shutdown I clicked the apple menu choose shutdown nothing came up, no dialog box. I tried the control+alt+command+eject didn't work either.
