Cannot Restart or Shutdown my iMac from the Apple menu.

I have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu. The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer. This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure. .

The shutdown and menu items are missing from the apple menu.Â
Also, the finder always starts up in simple mode. If I switch to full finder, I still do not have any shutdown or restart.Â
Latest version of Yosemite. Running on 2009 Powerbook. 10.10 Installed over Mavericks.

Is there a way to manually lock an iMac screen? Like you can on Windows' PC's, I'm wanting to type or click a function to lock my screen and go to the log-in screen instead of waiting for the alloted time to run out.Â

when occurs a suspension of hard drive activity, manually or after a period of inactivity, this suspension seems to be incomplete (a ventilator continue to run) therefore my mac (power-mac G5, OS 10.4.11) is unable to restart, no possible action from the keyboard (I must shut down and restart)

My iMac is the latest model, however when I try to shut it down I get a grey screen with the apple loading spiral and it doesn't shutdown. I have version 10.7.4 OSX Lion, all updates have been downloaded. I have resorted to leaving it on. I do not want to hard shutdown because this could damage the system, my old iMac broke after the hard drive was damaged with the same style of issue.

I just started having some problems with my late 2006 24" iMac and they're still happening after updating to 10.5.7. I think the problem centers around Front Row because Disk Utility reports disk permission errors related to Front Row. Repairing permissions is reported as successful but the problem still persists. For whatever reason Front Row stopped working the other day. Nothing (Command-Escape, Rowmote ln my iPod Touch, etc...) would get it to launch. I tried reinstalling Front Row and no dice.
Then yesterday I had an instance where my iMac wouldn't restart of shut down. I was forced to hold the power button down to fix it. It happened again today. I couldn't restart or shutdown but everything else seemed to work except Front Row and there was a spinning beachball when I moved the mouse cursor to the top right-hand corner of the screen (where some of the menu items are). Before forcing a reboot by pressing the power button this time I thought to check the Console. Here's what I saw, essentially repeating, over and over:.....................
So my Mac Pro (2008, 2.8ghz quad core) won't restart or shut down. It powers up just fine and has no other issues. If I want to restart it, then my only option is to hold down the power button. Here's a console log any ideas where the problem is?
View 15 Replies View Relatedmy mac pro 8 core intermittently will not shut down or turn off. Happens about 20% time. When I tell it to shut down, the finder will quit, finder menu goes away, the dock will stay on the screen and the computer will not turn off. This happened right after I used bootcamp to install win 7 on a dedicated HHD. I was hoping upgrading to 10.6.3 will fix, but the problem still happens about 20% of times. I'm willing to re-format and re-install snow leopard if thats what it takes

when i try it mac freees with its grey screen and actifity symbol
My IMAC keeps prompting me to restart after the screen turns grey. Essentially, after a few hours of use, the screen turns dark grey, filling in from the top to the bottom slowly. Once the screen has the dark grey hue, directions pop up in the middle of the screen for me to restart the computer. Once I restart it, the computer automatically generates an error box to report to apple. However, when I click the box to submit to apple, even if when the computer is connected and running well, it will not allow me to report it.

i am a teacher in a school where we have been told that every student must shut down each MacBook or iMac when finished. It is not unusual for 6-8 classes a day to do this. I have said putting the MacBooks to sleep would be better for them. Some of the laptops are taking 5 minutes to restart. Can't find data from Apple to support my concerns.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIt's been happening for a while now and I had hoped 10.5.3 would fix. When I choose to restart or shutdown, 90% of the time it hangs on grey screen after logging out and I have to hold down power button to shutdown. No apps hanging. Also have problem where when I open the cover to bring my MBA out of standby mode, I'll be presented with the logon screen. I'll type my password and my screen goes blank like it's gone back to sleep but the power light is fully lit. Have to close cover, wait till it goes on standby, then open cover to bring up password logon again. Should I reinstall OS X again?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 7 on my iMac, and was wondering if there is a way to stop Windows from being the main OS that the computer defaults to on a restart/shutdown. I'd like OS X to be the default OS.

I have had this problem for the last year but have worked around it by manually shutting down the system. My mac will not shutdown on command or restart during a program update or by going to the apple and trying g to restart. I have tried on numerous attempts to find a related topic but there is none to my knowledge.

whenever I use my macbook for some reason my MBP will hang on shut down when I use it for a while, and I have to do a hard shut down. but after I do the hard shut down I can restart it after that and it will be at the normal time.
Could it some how be related to my bell internet stick or extended time with out shutting down( 1-2 days on average)?
I couldn't eject external disk, searching on internet followed a suggestion to delete com.apple...trash.plist in home folder library/preferences.still didn't work and I restart the computer and it worked. I can eject the external disk. I continued browsing the internet for several hours. And when I wanted to shutdown I clicked the apple menu choose shutdown nothing came up, no dialog box. I tried the control+alt+command+eject didn't work either.
