MacBook :: Randomly Shutting Down - System Is Overheating

Feb 11, 2010

My Macbook is 1.5 years old (13in, white, 2 GHz). About two weeks ago, it would randomly shut off. It would restart fine, but shut off sooner. Sometimes, it wouldn't even restart. Now, it's at the point where when I power it on, it rarely restarts past the white apple start-up screen.

My thought is that it is overheating. Are there any more ideas? What can I do to save my macbook?

Mac Mini :: System Overheating And Shutting Down

Jan 14, 2010

I've googled to see if I can find a solution to this but not had any luck - wonder if you could help. My Mac Mini is 1.5Ghz PowerPc G4, 512Mb RAM, running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I bought it second hand a couple of years ago and in the past while it's really been playing up a bit. It first started overheating and shutting down when I was doing really resource intensive stuff - for example, opening a large amount of RAW image files. However, it's now started taking to shutting down when I'm doing normal browsing, using Spotify etc The machine also tends to hang a lot, and I can't really stream videos very well either. The vents at the back of the Mac definitely aren't blocked and there's plenty of space around the machine to let the air circulate.

MacBook Pro :: System Shutdowns Randomly - Overheating While Watching Videos

Dec 7, 2009

Ive been experiencing multiple shut downs, particularly while streaming video from the internet. I think it may be overheating..anyone else have this problem? Running a MBP 2.16CD with snow leopard Also, I'd like to add I just experienced something weird. It was a shutdown, but it was like a shadow melting over the screen, then it said you must restart the computer in a few different languages. What's that about?

MacBook :: Shutting Down Randomly - How To Prevent From Shutting Down

Mar 23, 2010

I have a MacBook which has recently been shutting down when it feels like :/ this all started a week or two ago (well not the shut downs but other issues that I'll get too), basically the fan I think has been knocked as it is bumping the top or something as the whirring is getting loud and it sounds like every now and again it hits something

Also CPU usage seems to be averaging out at 20% for Safari and 100% for HD Video where as it used to be very small amount for Safari and 30 - 40% for HD.

OS X :: Black Macbook Overheating / Shutting Down

Sep 7, 2010

over the past few weeks my blackbook has been shutting down more and more frequently from what I can only believe is overheating. I just checked my computer upon startup with SMC fan control - it starts up at about 70 C and at about 3500 RPM. Yet, after a few minutes, the fan immediately drops down to 1100 RPM or and fluctuates between 800-1400. I try to force the fans to spin with SMC Fan control, but nothing happens. I've looked all over the web and I can't find anything definitive. I know that macbooks tend to overheat. What can I do?

MacBook Air :: Overheating - One Core Shutting Down?

Jul 28, 2008

I'v just noticed, after installing iStat menus, two different CPU usage measurement graphs. Core 2 duo, so apparently one for each core or chipset, whatever . But the weird thing is, that sometimes, while watching movies, burning dvd etc. (sample "high usage" situation), when the CPU temp. goes around 60 celc. and fan spins at 6200 rpm, one of the "core graphs" shows nothing, like the core is shutting down (screen attached). It's annoying, because the whole system slows down, I can't do anything, and after like 5 mins it gets back to normal (after closing for example the movie). Any solution for this or should I just get used to it?

MacBook :: Overheating And Shutting Down On YouTube - Fans Not Running?

Jul 5, 2012

My Macbook's been overheating and shutting itself down the past two days, usually when on YouTube. Having installed the Fan Control system preference, I can see the fans aren't running at all. My first thought is that they might be broken, but this happened for a little while last year, too, and the fans started working again after a while. Also, it's been miserably hot in my area the past week, and I wonder if that's contributed to it, too (even though the laptop's in an air-conditioned room). Anyway, should I wait and see if the fans begin working again, take it to a repair shop (warranty's expired, so I'm not keen on that), or maybe buy a cooler pad?

PowerPC :: Mac G5 Shutting Down - Overheating?

Nov 27, 2010

I've got an early 2005 model Power Mac G5. Bought it from a hospital and it's really clean inside. Lately it's been shutting down spontaneously without warning. I thought it might be an issue with overheating, but I'm not that familiar with normal heat levels for a CPU. I installed iStat nano and checked the temperatures. I took a screen shot of the widget. Temperatures are in Fahrenheit. Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track? What do I need to do to solve this problem?

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Overheating And Shutting Down

Dec 31, 2010

I don't know if it is a fan or a drive that starts up and runs really fast and loud, then the computer shuts off. I always thought it was the fan, but now am not sure. I have moved it to a place where it is exposed to more air, but that has not seemed to help. Does anyone have an idea or solution to this problem? The nearest Mac dealer is about 80 miles away, so if I can fix this on my own, I would like to try.

MacBook Pro :: Shutting Down Randomly - How To Solve It

Feb 7, 2010

So, for the last week or so I'm been experiencing very strange symptoms, which I think are probably all connected:

1) My MBP (running 10.5.8 bought in August 2008) has from time to time just been turning itself off. Like, I'm just working on something and then it suddenly turns off.
2) My mouse from time to time stops responding to input, sometimes the keyboard does the same thing
3) When I restart after 1 or 2 occurs, it doesn't work. The computer turns on, I get to the screen with the apple on it (there's a chime all of that), then it goes to a plain blue screen and just stays there - the log in box never comes up.
4) In what I think may be related, my computer seems to be running extremely "hot" right now. After just normal use, I'm reaching GPU temperatures as high as 75 degrees according to iStat and CPU temps around 70.

MacBook Pro :: Randomly Shutting Down For No Reason

Jul 3, 2012

Macbook pro (older style non-unibody) running 10.6.8 has started randomly shutting down instantly for no reason. Sometimes only lasting 30 secs before just shutting off, sometimes up to 10 minutes. Happens when cool or hot, no apparent rhyme or reason. Tried resetting SMC, no difference. Ran software update, thought that had fixed it as it stopped happening for a day, then the problem started up again.

MacBook Air :: Shutting Down Randomly While Listening To YouTube

May 7, 2012

First of all, let me give you a rundown on everything I have done: I have reset SMC. I have reset PRAM. I have disabled Java in all browsers, and I have deleted Java. I have erased disk completely, taken it to the Apple store and have OS reinstalled. I have repaired the disk. I have repaired disk permissions, and I discovered Java had a value of 80, should be 0. (This caused me to disable most Java programs.) I have verified the disk and disk permissions.

After the restore, I have only reinstalled a few programs: (Upon reaching this problem again, I deleted some programs):
Opera Browser - Deleted, did not allow me to disable Java.
Caffeine - Deleted, not well known.
StarCraft II - By Blizzard Entertainment, too uptight to create this kind of problem.
Komodo Edit - Deleted
Skype
LogMeInHamachi - Deleted

Files:
A folder with some HTML and CSS and a few pictures - Deleted
A screenshot of my computer on my desktop.

I have no music in iTunes. Nothing. For example, right now, I am listening to YouTube and typing this. A message pops up with message: Are you sure you want to shut down: Sleep Restart Cancel Shutdown (Shutdown is blue).

MacBook :: Computer Randomly Shutting Down / Screen Goes Blank Instantaneously

Nov 1, 2009

I have a ibook G4 that's been randomly shutting down. It started doing this maybe about a month ago but it's started getting really bad lately. At first it would shut down if I unplugged the adapter. Not every time I unplugged it, but probably about 50% of the time. When I press the battery button all of the green lights would light up. About half of the time it will start up again if I just hit the power button but the half of the time I have to reset the pRAM. Lately this same thing has been happening except when the computer is still plugged in. And when in say shutting down I mean essentially instantaneously. One second it's on and then the screen goes black and it makes that turning off noise. Not a chime, but like all the fans and hardware are coming to a stop.

Mac Pro :: Shutting Down / Sleeping Automatically And Randomly

Aug 3, 2009

I have a MAc Pro, Bought in January 09, pretty much stock except for an exta 500 gb drive and the Nvidia video card.

I have a strange problem, I will be using the computer and it will just shut down. Ie my LCD monitor shows the "RBG MODE" screen which it shows during a reboot or if turned on when computers off. My Intelli mouse explorer laser mouse turns off but if I click the laser turns on and off with each click and the power light on the tower is lit but nothing turns the machine off/on unless I hold it down till it reboots.

This has been happening since about the beginning of July, happened last week again every 10 minutes or so it would do this. Saw a post that said it's cause its too hot and its shutting down for safety, I have Istat and the temps at that time was 35 degrees celcius ambient and the processors when watching a dvd or somthing was around 40 degrees, I installed smc fan control and ramped up my fans and with them runing 1500 rpms the temperatures have been steady at around 32 ambient and 35-37 for the vaious sensors. Today the heat wave is over and istat says the ambient is 26, processors and drives are still 35-37 and it rebooted again.... is my machine running hot or is it somthing else.. I am at a loss. It is a Stat holiday here so I cant call my local repair place. Running OSX 10.5.7 any other info is available if needed.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screen Randomly Shutting Off?

Jun 17, 2012

So frustrated with this situation. It appears this is only happening since upgrading to Lion so that's why I've chose to post it in this forum. My screen has been shutting off randomly. And I've only been able to get it to happen when I use gestures on the trackpad. (I.E.: "App Expose, "Show desktop" or "Show all windows.) I say my screen because the HD is still spinning, the keyboard backlights are still on and the status light is still lit. I can't do anything but hard shutdown. I've tried adjusting the brightness, clicking, keyboard commands (force quit) and nothing does anything. I've been sending the crash report to Apple but I feel like that is pointless so I'm turning to the forum for a possible answer. I've inluded my specs below as well as a copy of the log that got sent to apple (in blue). I don't know if it will say anything to anyone but it's worth a shot. I don't think it's a screen cable issue cause I'm not moving or adjusting the screen when this is happening.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Started Randomly Shutting Down When Not Used

Feb 5, 2008

I looked into my issue a little but recently my IMac G5 started randomly shutting down when left unused for a bit but that seems to have stopped as far as I have noted. Now occasionally when it goes into sleep mode it will freeze on the black screen and the fan will go crazy. I plan on buying a MBP, if the update ever comes out, and then ill just completely wipe the IMac and give it to my parents, who still use the original I mac, G3 or something. I read a certain series of I Macs were having motherboard problems, W950 or something, but mine wasn't that serial code.
