I'm currently using the 2TB drive as my time machine backup and the other drives for mostly media files (lots of movies, tv shows, etc.). What I would like to do is combine the non-backup drives to show up as a single drive in leopard. Is this possible? RAID 0 is out of the question since they're different sizes. Is there a way in Disk Utility to do this?

Tray 1: SSD boot/apps
Tray 2: 1TB storage drive
External 1 FW800: 1TB storage drive
And then mirroring the TB drives with a OS X software Raid 1.
But, if one drive crashes, is the other drive instantly usable? How do you separate or recover the "mirrored" drive in a Raid 1?
Also, can you do a Raid 1 with a drive on an SATA, and then a FW800 with such different transfer speeds, will the FW800 drive be able to write as fast as the SATA one, or will the SATA one have to slow down?
What is the best way to have an internal drive in the Mac Pro, and then have it real-time mirrored on an external? Or is this not possible.
Currently, my iMac has 10.4.11 on the internal 250GB drive and 10.5.8 on an external 500 GB drive. Is there any way to 'move' 10.5.8 to the internal drive and the 10.4.11 to the external, even if it requires another external drive to accomodate the swap, without reinstalling?There is plenty of disk space on each. Not sure if this would require new installations with some form of backup of data/applications. Trying to do as little as possible.

The day i got it i installed a 1TB WD sate drive in bay 2....No problems it works great.....However, today i picked up 2 more 1 TB WD drives and attempted to install into slots 3 and 4... I have two internal drives, one SSD one HD. I have my OS and applications on the SSD and my home folder on the HD. I have an external drive that I was using as a time machine backup and had no issue backing up both drives. The problem arose when I needed to restore my computer. Time machine had backed up the data as basically one drive, so when trying to restore it wanted to load all the data onto either the HD or the SSD ONLY. I was unable to restore as the combined data was to large for either drive. I was able to get my computer back in working order, but would like to avoid such a catastrophe in the future. My Current Issue:
What I am hoping to accomplish would be to partition the external drive, and then have two independent time machine backups. One for the SSD and one for the HD. This way I would be able to restore the drives separately in the future if needed.
I have various drives from over the years, some from work and some from home - probably about 8 total ranging from 20 gigs to 250 gig in size.
There are duplicate copies of many folders all over the place - but some of the folders do not contain all the same amount of files as I added photos or doc's to one but not another.
Is there some master program that can look at literally every file in all the folders on all the drives and copy them to 1 new giant drive. I think CarbonCopy does this at the folder level - but if I have 3 drives that each have a folder called harry's pics and there are a vastly different number of sub folders, and even different number of pics in folders of the same name... so I don't think it will work.
My MBP has a 320GB harddrive with like 240GB used on it but I only have two 250 GB harddrives so you can see the problem I'm in. I would like to combine into a single virtual drive so that it can accommodate my Time Machine backups.

View 22 Replies View RelatedFirst replace the Optical drive (superdrive is superdead) in my 2007 macbook with a SSD, probably a 128-240GBish, the current internal drive is a 5400rpm 500GB. I want to install the OS and a couple of the main programs I use on the SSD. The main question is what will the the time capsule do when trying to restore to the (smaller GB )SSD if the backup image (currently around 400 GB) is from the 500GB. Is there a better way to go about this? The HDD has about 100GB available. If there is a forum on this let me know.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a weird, and hopefully silly, question. I searched and searched both here and on the Apple website but couldn't find an answer, so here goes. I recently installed my OS onto a new OCZ Vertex SSD in my new Octo Mac Pro. Everything is mostly fine but I get occasional 'hang ups' when I go into my system preferences and attempt to change settings (I migrated the install from the stock drive that Apple sent me, so my next step is to delete the OS from my SSD and do a fresh install from scratch to see if that solves things).
My question is, does it matter, physically speaking, where my system drive is located within the order of the drive bays? I.E. does my system drive need to be the first disk in the bays or can it be the third or fourth disk? Does this effect performance at all?
Does anyone know if the internal SATA drives on the MacPros are hot swappable?

I have read that some people choose to keep just the OS on one hard drive and everything else on the drive. Is this the best way to go? Which hard drive would the applications go on (with the OS?)?
The main use of this machine is for graphics (Adobe CS3 and Aperture).
On a Power Mac G4 desktop with 10.4 OS I have 2 hard disks. One is the system drive, the other is empty. I'd like to link the empty drive to double the capacity of the system hard drive, thus making the two a single virtual hard drive.

I recently purchased a new SSD and would like to input that into my MBP 2012. If I have a partition on my external HDD that contains the carbon copy of my MBP, am I able to clone it into my SSD after I have installed it in the MBP through the USB?
Internal HDD --> External HDD
Place internal HDD into optibay, and place SSD into the harddisk slot
Connect External HDD via USB to MBP
CarbonCopy to new SSD via USB from External HDD
Format Internal HDD
Will this work?
I'm sure this is answered somewhere, but does Time Machine backup any mounted drive when it does a backup, or only the internal drives, or only the boot?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm still surprised that she's okay having this giant mac pro and 30" screen in our tiny living room, but it certainly does help that they're so pretty. I looked through this thread discussing the WD Black drives...it's a few months old, would people still recommend those? While they can definitely be had through newegg for pennies, I don't mind spending a little more if it will get a quieter/more reliable drive.
These will be used to do autocad & photoshop (oh, and, of course one of them will be a bootcamp drive, since autocad unfortunately isn't a native mac app), primarily, so speed is somewhat of an issue, but it's not like I'm doing gigantic 3D renders. One drive will be a scratch disk for PS, one drive a time machine backup, and one a data drive...at least, that's what I've considered at this point...still trying to figure out how I want to do my total household network backup...currently, external drives are connected to my home theater-powering mac mini, and our laptops time machine into that, using 'home and away' (awesome app, by the way). I'd like to keep that system as is, and maybe just have the mac pro as a completely separate system (my 'work' system), and have its time machine backups self-contained, and probably backed up offsite somehow.

Do they exist yet? The prices for laptop BD drives in general are lower than I expected but any slot-loaders available are about 12mm high, which means 17" MBP owners are in luck. [URL] It's strange that this one is available though, yet encouraging. If they can build a 9mm drive that uses a tray then surely a slot format would be easier?

While I'd love to have two drives of equal capacities for time machine, the funds just aren't there right now. Anyway, I was looking at this drive: WD 160gb Passport Am I able to take this apart and put my current 60gb drive in it? And then use the 160gb for an internal? Or would it make more sense to buy an internal drive and an external enclosure. Also, should I instead get the Seagate drive, which is the same price, 40 less gbs, but a 5 year warranty. How likely are these things to break? Also, how does one go about switching the drives? I know the physical aspect of it, but how do I make sure OS X runs the same? I have a time machine backup right now, am I able to use that for a complete restore?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased the MCE OptiBay and am going to add a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500gig (BOOT DRIVE) to my Seagate 5200 500 gig (DATA DRIVE), already inside my MBP. I was reviewing URL and was interested in formatting the new 7200.4 into my Primary Boot Drive with all my data on the other old 5200.
My question is, What should my Boot Drive consist of? The OS and Applications or only the OS itself? Also I was looking to create a scrach partition..would this best on the boot drive or the data drive?
So I just received my Nehalem Mac Pro today, and I successfully installed three new hard drives in it, and I can access all four of my drives in Finder, but NONE of them (including the Boot Drive that came with the computer) are showing up on the desktop! I can't figure out why so I thought I'd ask here.
Oddly enough, my Firewire 800 Drive shows up on the desktop. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen? And how to fix it?

Before i get into the dual drive thing.
I am a photographer, i work on multi layer large psd files that get in the gig range sometime. I have an HD camcorder as well and want to start doing some video work. I doubt ill get into it much, but I WOULD LIKE TO AT LEAST VIEW AVCHD FILES OR AT LEAST CONVERT A 2 MINUTE VIDEO FASTER THAN 20 MINUTES. (i really dont know much about video, but i record 30fps.)
Anyways. I currently have the first macbook pro 17" 2.16ghz maxed ram 2gb ati radeon x1600 with 256ram and 100gb 7200 hd. Mac osx 10.4. I use it with external display to do all my editing. i keep all files on external 7200 firewire 800 drives.
So I decided to go with a refurbed macbook pro 13" 2.53ghz unibody with 4gb ram (8gb future upgrade), and the 9400m nvidia graphics and 5400 250gb hd.
And here is a list for my reasoning. (i already bought it)
-I am worried about running into snow leopard problems with my CS3 suite so this model runs 10.5 leopard. I hear theres really no problems with cs3 on it.
-i dont want to spend 800 bucks on the cs3 upgrade, for now. plus i cant afford that too.
-i had a budget of about $1200 max for the computer. other money going towards photo equipment upgrades.
-i got it from apple directly. i was looking at ebay forever and i could have gotten a better deal on a better computer, but i just worried about that, even though i have sold and bought lots of stuff from there.
-im getting kinda tired of lugging around a huge 17" laptop. (my backpack with camera gear ends up being over 80 pounds. haha, i know it wont do much, but still) I do like more desk room when im at my desk. it gets crowded with the macbook, display, external keyboard and pen tablet and speakers and printers.
-i am probably going to sell my 17" on ebay after i receive my new 13" and set it up. i could get up to $600 for it, it seems. its only going to bring me less money if i wait longer to sell it. (kinda sad that over 3 grand is only worth 600 bucks now)
So did i make a good choice? i mean it doesn't seem i could have done much better unless i went for a desktop or took a risk on ebay.
Ok now to the dual drive thing.
i dont like the idea of the 5400 hard drive in the new 13". so i want to upgrade it to a 7200. i came across those seagate momentus hybrid ssd drives 500gb at 7200. I will most likely get one of those.
then i came across the whole thing of changing out the optical drive with a second hardrive. then i was like why not put another one of those hybrid ssd momentus in there.
i remember working on the computers in college that had dual 500gb drives, and one was completely dedicated to scratch. maybe overkill, but that machine killed. of course it was a mac pro though or maybe it was a g5, but still.
when i got my 17" macbook pro, i used the optical drive for 3 days non stop importing cds into my first itunes library. then. i never used the optical drive again, ever. however if i order the dual drive thing from mec they give you a free external enclosure for the optidrive you remove.
what i am wondering is can the macbook pro 13" handle 2x 7200 drives. as in power and heat? I know people say they handle dual drives. but just wanting to make sure.
When I have no other internal drives connected I have no problems with Windows 7 loaded in boot camp. But when I connect my other 4 internal drives (in bay 2, 3, 4 and optical bay 6) which are set up as a Raid 0 configuration for Snow leopard I run into problems- I get a blue screen of death almost instantly when I start to move the cursor in windows 7. Seems like if there was a way to tell Windows 7 to ignore the 4 other drives then it would work fine? I don't want to have to pull them from the machine each time I start in windows 7.
