Final Cut Pro X :: Copying Files Between Libraries / Drives?

Dec 11, 2014

I have two drives open.  I've created different Libraries, one for each drive.  I want to move a 'project' or a 'clip' from one Library/drive to another.  I drag and drop.  Will the project/clip moving from one Library/drive to another bring in the relevant original media?  (And I believe I have to recreate any Proxy files, is that right?)  And will the original media (copied) now be found in the importing Library?  Or in the folders I've set up for THAT Library.  I've been trying to keep my media in separate folders so my Libraries open fast.

That would be a related question perhaps?  I'm trying to keep my Libraries small, so they open and close fast; and can be backed up on another 'small' drive; and my assumption has been that if I put my original media, project backups etc., assigned to designated folders (NOT in the Library file) that this will be the case - faster working with the Libraries, smaller Library files I can back up on other drives.

Final Cut Pro X :: How To Save All Libraries Into External Hard Drive

Nov 30, 2014

I recently purchased an external hard drive to store my Final Cut Pro projects, and what I would like to happen is that I see projects stored on my computer when the drive is not plugged in I would like to see the projects stored on my computer. If this is not possible I would at least like to be able to see the project stored on my drive and edit them Final Cut Pro. I only see the projects on my computer in Final Cut Pro even when the hard drive is plugged in and it has projects on it. I basically want to store my Final Cut Pro projects and be able to edit them on my external drive. (final cut pro 10.1.3 latest build of Yosemite)

OS X :: Way To Combine Internal And External Drives

Feb 19, 2009

I'm currently using the 2TB drive as my time machine backup and the other drives for mostly media files (lots of movies, tv shows, etc.). What I would like to do is combine the non-backup drives to show up as a single drive in leopard. Is this possible? RAID 0 is out of the question since they're different sizes. Is there a way in Disk Utility to do this?

Mac Pro :: OS X Setup Using Internal And External Drives - How To Recover Or Use

Sep 18, 2010

I am thinking of doing this:

Tray 1: SSD boot/apps

Tray 2: 1TB storage drive

External 1 FW800: 1TB storage drive

And then mirroring the TB drives with a OS X software Raid 1.

But, if one drive crashes, is the other drive instantly usable? How do you separate or recover the "mirrored" drive in a Raid 1?

Also, can you do a Raid 1 with a drive on an SATA, and then a FW800 with such different transfer speeds, will the FW800 drive be able to write as fast as the SATA one, or will the SATA one have to slow down?

What is the best way to have an internal drive in the Mac Pro, and then have it real-time mirrored on an external? Or is this not possible.

OS X :: Swap OS Versions Between Internal And External Drives?

Oct 19, 2009

Currently, my iMac has 10.4.11 on the internal 250GB drive and 10.5.8 on an external 500 GB drive. Is there any way to 'move' 10.5.8 to the internal drive and the 10.4.11 to the external, even if it requires another external drive to accomodate the swap, without reinstalling? There is plenty of disk space on each. Not sure if this would require new installations with some form of backup of data/applications. Trying to do as little as possible.

OS X Mavericks :: Independently Backup Two Internal Drives On One External Drive

Jun 21, 2014

My Computer: Mid 2010 - 15" MacBook Pro - OSX 10.9.3 My Past Issue:

I have two internal drives, one SSD one HD. I have my OS and applications on the SSD and my home folder on the HD. I have an external drive that I was using as a time machine backup and had no issue backing up both drives. The problem arose when I needed to restore my computer. Time machine had backed up the data as basically one drive, so when trying to restore it wanted to load all the data onto either the HD or the SSD ONLY. I was unable to restore as the combined data was to large for either drive. I was able to get my computer back in working order, but would like to avoid such a catastrophe in the future. My Current Issue:

What I am hoping to accomplish would be to partition the external drive, and then have two independent time machine backups. One for the SSD and one for the HD. This way I would be able to restore the drives separately in the future if needed.

Final Cut Pro X :: Editing On Internal Or External Drive For Small Media Files With Lots Of Layers And Compositing?

Aug 21, 2014

I am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.

I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX.  I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.

Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..

Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.

So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects  / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.

Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external) ...

MacBook Pro :: IOS 7.1.2 / Merging Hard Drives With Similar Libraries?

Sep 8, 2014

I have two external hard drives with very similar iTunes libraries. The older one has some albums that the newer one does not, the new one has more albums from some of the artists as well as new artists. I have tried moving the files before and ended up loosing a lot of content. What is the best way to merge all of the music onto one hard drive while ensuring that a file with more information isn't being overwritten by a file with less information with the same name?

However, some of the libraries STILL appeared in my browser. ...but WITHOUT the purple library symbol. And... no contents appear when you click the arrow... AND... I can't delete them? (They do NOT show up on the HD, thus I can't delete them in the finder, either.) What gives?

Final Cut Pro X :: Upgraded To 10.1.3 - Loads Libraries Then Crashes

Aug 28, 2014

I upgraded to FCPX 10.1.3 with no issues. Libraries loaded and all was well. I drag and dropped a video on the timeline and FCPX stalled, then crashed. Now, when I attempt to open it up it loads the libraries, sits for a few minutes and then crashes.

I have repaired permissions.

Trashed FCPX preferences.

Ran a maintenance program (Onyx)

I have a Time Machine backup that I accessed and brought 10.1.2 back into my apps folder (so now I have both). When opening 10.1.2 it asks to import my libraries. If I do this will I lose data or will it ruined my libraries. My only backup of the FCPX libraries is an online backup (backblaze) and will take years to restore.

2 Questions:

1. How do I troubleshoot my issue with 10.1.3?

2. Can I downgrade (already on my system) to 10.1.2 and when I import libraries that have been imported to 10.1.3 into 10.1.2 will Iose data?

Processor: 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 24GB
Storage: 1TB internal, 9 TB external (FCPX scratch disk is a 4TB GRaid)
OS: Mavericks 10.9.4

Here is the crash report:

OS X :: Restore From TC Onto Two Internal Drives?

Nov 5, 2010

First replace the Optical drive (superdrive is superdead) in my 2007 macbook with a SSD, probably a 128-240GBish, the current internal drive is a 5400rpm 500GB. I want to install the OS and a couple of the main programs I use on the SSD. The main question is what will the the time capsule do when trying to restore to the (smaller GB )SSD if the backup image (currently around 400 GB) is from the 500GB. Is there a better way to go about this? The HDD has about 100GB available. If there is a forum on this let me know.

Mac Pro :: Internal Drives Need To Be In Certain Order?

Jun 27, 2009

I have a weird, and hopefully silly, question. I searched and searched both here and on the Apple website but couldn't find an answer, so here goes. I recently installed my OS onto a new OCZ Vertex SSD in my new Octo Mac Pro. Everything is mostly fine but I get occasional 'hang ups' when I go into my system preferences and attempt to change settings (I migrated the install from the stock drive that Apple sent me, so my next step is to delete the OS from my SSD and do a fresh install from scratch to see if that solves things).

My question is, does it matter, physically speaking, where my system drive is located within the order of the drive bays? I.E. does my system drive need to be the first disk in the bays or can it be the third or fourth disk? Does this effect performance at all?

I have read that some people choose to keep just the OS on one hard drive and everything else on the drive. Is this the best way to go? Which hard drive would the applications go on (with the OS?)?

The main use of this machine is for graphics (Adobe CS3 and Aperture).

CarbonCopy to new SSD via USB from External HDD

ITunes :: Migrating ITunes Libraries From 2 Drives

Sep 21, 2010

On my G5 Tower, I had two hard drives. HD1 has all my applications & such, while HD2 is larger & contains all my working files. HD2 also was where I was keeping my iTunes Music Library. At some point during an OS 10.5 upgrade, iTunes created a new Music Library on HD1 and began saving all new music & podcasts to that file. It was still recognizing the music in the HD1 disc Library, so I didn't notice this issue for a while. Now I have the new i7 iMac with the 1TB HD. I've pulled everything from the old G5 Tower over via Target Mode, and that captured everything from HD1. Target Mode didn't recognize the HD2, so I copied those files over manually (likely mistake number one).

Once I fired up iTunes on the iMac, it saw the music & stuff from the Music Library on HD1, but there was an exclamation mark on the songs that were from HD2. Went to File > Library > Organize Library & clicked that, but nothing happened. Reading on the Apple Support Forum, I noticed that someone posted about going to Preferences > Advanced > iTunes Media Folder Location, and putting in the location of the older Music Library on HD1. Did that, and then ran Organize Library, but that didn't do much other than mark ALL my songs with an exclamation point (can't find). So at this point, rather than jack things around even more, I'll run this up the flagpole & see if any of you Apple-savvy people has a solution for me. Know I can go into iTunes & do a song-by-song re-link of all the files, but at 9233 items, that would kind of take a while.

Mac Pro :: 30" - Internal HD Records - Need Quiet Drives

Aug 10, 2009

I'm still surprised that she's okay having this giant mac pro and 30" screen in our tiny living room, but it certainly does help that they're so pretty. I looked through this thread discussing the WD Black drives...it's a few months old, would people still recommend those? While they can definitely be had through newegg for pennies, I don't mind spending a little more if it will get a quieter/more reliable drive.

These will be used to do autocad & photoshop (oh, and, of course one of them will be a bootcamp drive, since autocad unfortunately isn't a native mac app), primarily, so speed is somewhat of an issue, but it's not like I'm doing gigantic 3D renders. One drive will be a scratch disk for PS, one drive a time machine backup, and one a data drive...at least, that's what I've considered at this point...still trying to figure out how I want to do my total household network backup...currently, external drives are connected to my home theater-powering mac mini, and our laptops time machine into that, using 'home and away' (awesome app, by the way). I'd like to keep that system as is, and maybe just have the mac pro as a completely separate system (my 'work' system), and have its time machine backups self-contained, and probably backed up offsite somehow.
