I have a Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz circa jan 2006 and the hard drive is making the dieing cry already. I have a carbon copy on an external firewire of my system and am looking to replace my drive which I know is a Diamond max 10 250gb sata. My difficulty is I don't know what to put in! . I have seen Maxtor DiamondMax 21 - Hard drive - 320 GB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 8 MB but is this compatible with my machine, or would you choose something else and so improve on this?

I have just got a new 17" i7 2.66 UMBP. It comes with a 500GB Hard Drive but I would like to upgrade it to one of the newer 1TB ones.
My reasoning is to have not only more space but create a partition so I can run both OSX & Windows.
I am not sure which brands are more reliable than others & who offers the best warranty or back up service. I would want the fastest & quietest one available as long as it will definitely fit inside the notebook. Reliability & good customer service from the brand is also important as I gather my Applecare will only cover factory installed parts?
Which brand & models should I be looking at and which do you all recommend? I am not sure but I think I need to ensure that any replacement drive does not conflict with the notebooks built in sudden motion sensor?
Could I use an external Bluray drive with the new MBA as long as it is compatible with OSX?I know the MBA's have the capability of using an optical drive on another computer. Is it possible to create an audio CD from the MBA's library and write it to a disc on another computer?

I just got a used mac pro quad. I plan to use it for video production- final cut pro, pics - aperture, and music production- protools. THe computer came with 3 - 10k rpm 160g hd's. Two of them are set up as a raid 0. I like the idea of having a faster drive as a boot drive, but 160 seems kind of small to me as the drive to run memory hungry apps and the operating system. Am I right? I could go to a 300g 10k rpm drive. I am also thinking about getting a bigger drive, say a 750g or 1 tb 7200 rpm. Should I use this as the boot drive or as a secondary storage drive?. If it's the boot drive should I add the other 160g 10k drive to the raid or keep it separate? I assume that neither way would be wrong, nor create a problem, but since I haven't put anything on it yet, I'm wondering what would be the most efficient way to manage my files and get the most out of my computer.
View 16 Replies View RelatedMy Computer: Mid 2010 - 15" MacBook Pro - OSX 10.9.3Â My Past Issue:
I have two internal drives, one SSD one HD. I have my OS and applications on the SSD and my home folder on the HD. I have an external drive that I was using as a time machine backup and had no issue backing up both drives. The problem arose when I needed to restore my computer. Time machine had backed up the data as basically one drive, so when trying to restore it wanted to load all the data onto either the HD or the SSD ONLY. I was unable to restore as the combined data was to large for either drive. I was able to get my computer back in working order, but would like to avoid such a catastrophe in the future. My Current Issue:
What I am hoping to accomplish would be to partition the external drive, and then have two independent time machine backups. One for the SSD and one for the HD. This way I would be able to restore the drives separately in the future if needed.
Just wondering if the Genius' have the ability (and product) to replace a failing hard drive?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy previous iMac 27" had a hard drive fail this week and I got a replacement (I guess they didn't want to wait for a replacement drive to come in, who knows). Problem is, this hard drive also makes the ticking noises, although not quite as loud or as frequent, and it also makes a louder whirring noise than I've heard on a Mac in a long time.So I'm a little bit skeptical about this hard drive as well, and I'm considering replacing it. What is a good option that will be quiet and reliable? I don't want to spend a lot of money, so solid state is probably not an option. That said, I don't need a ton of space, 500GB to 1TB would probably suffice (the current drive is the 1TB, it's the base level 27" iMac).

Today, I decided to create my own type of FLIQLO screensaver called "FlipClock." Here's a screenshot: Here's the download link: FlipClock Installation is simple. Open up System Preferences, go to Desktop & Screen Saver then drag the screensaver to the Preview pane. This will install it. Select it for use, and away you go.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a new imac 27" but noticed that the glass screen on the front did not fit flush on the left side to the aluminium unit. The overhang could be quite clearly seen from front and back and running your finger along it confirmed it stuck out with a resultant slightly sharp corner to the bottom right.I arranged for the return and replacement of the unit and a new one arrived today, I have not yet seen it myself, but my partner said it seems to have the same problem only this time on the right hand side! He also seems to think the hard drive is far more audible on this replacement.Has anyone else had similar issues? I don't know whether we are just being too fussy, but I've not seen it like this in the shops and for ?1649 I want it to be right!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an older iMac (20" Mid-2007, 2.4GHZ Core 2 Duo), and I'm running out of hard drive space on the internal HD. I'd rather replace the HD than whole computer (and external hard drives are a pain because I have not managed to get Time Machine to back them up properly). any recommendations of larger (i.e., 3TB or 4TB) hard drives that will work well as a replacement *internal* drive for this iMac?Â

I looked on eBay and there were a few Bluray internal drives for sale like this one [URL:...] The only thing I'm sceptical from buying one is that (1) will the iMac require a driver or will it recognise the drive, and (2) will a standard programme like VLC be able to play BD media? Looks like a good idea to put the iMac's screen to good use. Sorry Apple I'm not going to be downloading HD movies. My internet is not uncapped.

The box does state FOR PC on the front, and only lists Windows OS in the system requirements but the Seagate website contradicts this and says Mac OSX 4.8 upwards will work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy hard drive was going out on my older G4 Imac so I took it out and replaced with a new drive. Prior to removing the older defective drive I backed everything up on an external drive.
*I assumed I could just format the new drive and then reinstall the original OSX disks and then drag over the backup files and live happily ever after!
Problem #1: mac starts up but flashes a question mark. I insert the backup/restore disks that came with the computer (6 gray discs). This is not correct I see.
Problem #2: I am not 100% the drive I have is the right one (see below for all details). I may need a different connector? I ran the diagnostic cd that came with it and the new hard drive shows up and it says it's OK. NO other problems on the test.
Problem #3: I think the drive will/can only access 128GB of the new 200GB hard drive? if so, does this mean it will not work without an card or it will just not see/read the other storage?
Problem #4: Are the restore disks NOT the OS to reinstall? or was this on the internal hard drive already from the factory pre-loaded?
Someone said I would have to have someone make me a bootable OSX install and connect via external drive to start and then format the new drive and then re-install the OS somehow. I have been racking my brain trying all options and researching online all weekend!!

First replace the Optical drive (superdrive is superdead) in my 2007 macbook with a SSD, probably a 128-240GBish, the current internal drive is a 5400rpm 500GB. I want to install the OS and a couple of the main programs I use on the SSD. The main question is what will the the time capsule do when trying to restore to the (smaller GB )SSD if the backup image (currently around 400 GB) is from the 500GB. Is there a better way to go about this? The HDD has about 100GB available. If there is a forum on this let me know.
