OS X V10.7 Lion :: Possible To Use Automator To Move Files Based On The File Name?
Jun 21, 2012
I'm kind of new to Automator and I'm trying to come up with a sequence that will severely save me a few hours a day moving files from two larger folders into smaller folders. Basically the setup is that I have two folders, one constantly being populated with images and the other with video files. They each have file names starting with a two digit number (i.e. 12, 11, 10...) or "BG" and then a two digit number (i.e. BG12, BG11, BG10...) with the digits corresponding to a year. Essentially, I'd need to move the files into folders corresponding to the year (i.e. files starting with BG12 and 12 would be moved to 2012, files starting with BG11 and 11 would be moved to 2011, etc). As it stands now, I've only been able to get the 2012 folder populated.

I'm new to the Mac world but have been successful in creating a few Automator workflows to simplify certain tasks. However, I'm stuck on the flowing; I'd like to create a workflow that searches a particular folder for items created 30 days before today's date and the delete them. I'm assuming I need to create a variable of today's date and then subtract 30 days from it and so on. Haven't been able to figure this out.

I'm working on an Automator Application which would expand a Rar-archive full of pictures, and turn those into a PDF.This I got working, but now I want the output PDF to be named as the rar-archive's filename that I use as Application input. I tried around with some variables, but just couldn't manage to get the Application working in the end.How do I get the Application to name the output PDF like the input?

My Finder on my iMac keeps freezing when I try to move a folder or file, or when I try to empty the trash can. I have tried to Force Quit Finder, but when I do it does not start back up and I have to manually turn the computer off with the power button.

got automatically put into the Logic Pro discussions, however it's not really a Logic question or issue, more of a disk permission issue (I think..). Here is the original post: URL.... I'm stuck with this file on my system and how to remove it.Â

I am no longer able to move files via Finder or on my Desktop. When I click on a file, it is selected and the name of the file is high lighted in blue. I can move it around the screen but it is "stuck" to the cursor. When I let go of the mouse button, the file remains stuck to the cursor and sometimes, I can interact with various elements, i.e. buttons, etc. as if the file had never been selected, yet its icon remains attached to the cursor. After a while, the icon will disappear.I have tried restarting, shutting down and restarting and repairing permissions without success. Also, looks like auto-correction and spelling is no longer working either as it doesn't recognize misspelled words anymore.

I was having a lot of problems with my new (Christmas 11) MPB. It was very sluggish and occasionally would freeze. I took it to my Apple Store and the Genius said I was running all my apps in root and had too many files on the desktop. They should be under a user. Any files on the desktop are refreshed frequently, such as graphics (CAD, pictures, etc.) and that was what was killing performance. She then proceded to move my files/apps to my user profile.
Since I am the only user, I never paid any attention to where the files were.I would like to verify the information above and do the same process on two other computers, but I didn't catch enough of what she did to do it solo.

Currently running OSX 10.8.5. Trying to move iTunes Music directory and iPhoto to new external hard drive. They currently reside on a 1.5T WD My Passport drive. Need to copy the directories to my iMac (3.4 GHz i7) desktop and then onto my new external HD. When trying to copy to my hard drive, I get the popup: "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)."Â
These popups occur every few audio files. Thing is the files are not corrupt (I can play them in iTunes) and the volume was confirmed as clean by disk utility.Â
How do I move all the files? Line command via Terminal (if so I need specific instructions as I am not a coder).Â
I wanted to move the files originally because I was having problems in iPhoto. Rebuilt iPhoto using iPhoto Library Manager, but in rebuilding and reimporting images, I ran out of hard drive space. Saving iPhoto is paramount because it's the only source for my digital photos.Â

I have waht appear to be a profile specific issue that prevents me from moving files from a 2nd drive in my machine to the trash when using my standard profile.Â
I to to my 2nd internal drive and when I drag a file to the trash it asks me "Are you sure you want to delete "xxxxx.jpg"Â The item will be deleted immediately, You can't undo this action. If I click OK the item is delted and does not do to the trash. It aks liek is is an external drive, not an internal driveÂ
But when I delete a file from my Macintosh HD drive the item goes to the trash as it should. Â
If I log into my Admin account, the files from the second internal drive moves to the trash normally. I have set my normal login from standard to admin and it stil has the issue, I also have run disk utility and disk warrior and rebuilt the directory, but it has not changed the problemÂ

yesterday I moved all my files from my old MacBook Pro running SL to my new MBP 15,4. I used migration assistant and my time machine backup, that I had updated minutes before. Now I realized that some folders were not copied. Do you know where I can find a log regarding the moving process, so I can check which files were not moved?

At times I would like to gather all files of a certain extension (aif or jpg or xlsx or¦) in one location. By adding the extension parameter to the finder's FIND command, I can easily see them all, but that's only the first half. How do I now move, or copy them all into a single folder, say, on the desktop?

I have a set of photos I"d like to import into iPhoto, but iPhoto doesn't recognize them because they don't have file extensions. Could someone give me a script that will look at each file in a specific folder, check to see if an extension is present, and if not, add the correct extension based on the file type?Â

I have a large collection of files that I'd like to run through Automator to batch edit some qualities of these pictures. However, these images have been submitted from multiple people, moved around, and just "existed" for long enough that some of the files have lost their file extensions. The problem occurs when I try to run them through Automator. Everything runs fine until it comes across a file without an extension, then it stops, and displays an error message. Does anyone know a way around this in Automator? Does an Applescript exist that would be able to add these file extensions back in?

I have an automator script I made myself that I use constantly. When I run the script one of the steps takes a screenshot and saves it as a PNG file. When I run the script again, it replaces the old PNG file with a new one. I would really like it to save the PNG file so that file name begins with the current date at the beginning of the name. Meaning the PNG file would be named something like "6/23/10 screenshot". Is this possible?
I'd be almost as happy if I could at least get it to simply make a new PNG with any random filename just so long as it doesn't overwrite the old version. That way I could simply look at the date created column in the finder and get the same info.

I am very new to automator, but relatively savvy with macs and such. Having a strange problem where an Automator file action to rename a file with a sequential number is only working one time. The second time a new file drops into the folder, nothing happens. If I edit the Automator File Action, change the number to a new higher number, it will work one more time, and then not again.  The basic task is to rename a file with a new text and sequential number each time a file is dropped or saved to a folder. I am using a slide scanner, and the default image file that is saved is called 'untitled' each time. Having this work would let me automate the entire scanning process to one click...Â

I've just ordered a MBP 2.4Ghz with 7200rpm 750GB drive, I will be adding either a single 8GB memory stick (total of 10GB) or a 16GB kit. I'm looking for my first SSD use as a boot drive for OSX and potentially Win 7 in BootCamp and hope I can get some counsel on model selection and configuration. I read that SSDs suffer a performance drop (sometimes significant) as the drive fills up. Also there are both 256GB and 240GB drives.Â
1) Are there models that maintain performance over time? Is there a specification that indicates how performance drops as the drive fills up?Â
2)Â Is there a performance difference (current / long-term) between 256 and 240GB drives?Â
3) Does an abundance of RAM improve performance and / or longevity? Â
4)Â How much space (if any) should be kept free for swap files in OSX / Windows?Â
5)Â With 240 / 256GB SSDs, how much usable space is available after formatting?Â
6)Â Is there a difference in performance based on file format NTFS vs. HPS+?
7)Â Do I need to be concerned about major name brands (Intel, Samsung, OCZ, Kingston, etc.) being incompatible with MBPs?Â
8)Â Are some SSDs easier to install / configure / maintain on a MBP than others?Â
9)Â Are there any issues I should be aware of regarding the installation or use of a SSD that would impact my MBP's warranty?Â
Based on performance, reliability and 5-year warranty, I've been attracted to the Intel 520. I've also read good reports on the Samsung 830. One review indicated that the 830 maintained performance over time while the 520 experienced a significantly greater drop.

Why does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file? It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.
