Jul 18, 2009first off, long time MacRumors reader, finally joined the forum now in search of some aid.There are some other threads on a similar topic I know, but I was hoping for some So, the Hard drive in question is a Western Digital 5400rpm 320gig purchased from Amazon about 8 months ago, now the Hard drive has decided to die. I saw some early signs, but did not realise that the drive was in that bad of a condition at the time. Now, when attempting to boot into Mac OS X I get stuck at the Apple logo, with the little wheel spinning infinitely. I had a boot camp partition which worked, but could not help me and is no longer an option either. I tried using the Leopard boot disk, but Disk utility didnt do anything for me in terms of recovery or repair, I attempted to use the terminal to make an Image of the drive on an external, but it fails about 10% through, I'm assuming from corrupted data.

However, I'm a mac user now but when I connected my WD external hard disk I found out that I have lost everything on it. I thought may be because of my mac so I connected on my PC again and i have not seen any file which means I lost everything. Give me any software on mac that will get everything that I have lost.

Jul 15, 2009I have today received my shiny new macbook pro - very excited!I currently have a macbook, and I previously upgraded the hard drive to 320 GB (same as the new Macbook Pro). What I wanted to do was just swap the hard drives - however when I put the macbook hard drive in the macbook pro it didnt boot. Pressing ALT on startup it sees the hard drive but just hangs (doesnt even show the apple sign).I dont have all the application disks so dont really want to start from a fresh install - I was thinking of cloning the disk with super duper, but that probably will have the same effect of swapping the disk!

A truly bad experience! It is supposed that using 'disk utility' I can resize-expand-make bigger any dmg file. Every time I tried it, it was a totally fail process.The 'disk image' dmg did not resized at all.
I do not know why, it just happened to me many times.
Does anyone had similar experience? Any solution to this? So if I have a dmg that need to be bigger, I create a new one from scratch and I copy paste files from the old dmg.I need to do the same with hard disk partitions, using disk utility once again. I need to resize my hard disk partitions.Does this process works well as it should be, or it is a bad-implemented feature?
Intel Mac :: My Hard And Back Up Disk Both Failed
Jun 7, 2012My hard and back up disk both failed on the same day, strange but the kids were on the computer and things happen.Running Mac OS 10.6 I paid $800 to "super geeks" to recover the pics > 30,000 (many duplicates)I will receive a 500 gig external drive from them today via Fed Ex with the pics recovered .My plan is to move them to my iMac (had a new HD put in) but I do not want to transfer 30,000 pics priorto running duplicate annihilator & thumbnail annihilator on the new external drive.Is there an easy way to do this > looking for help?Can I run the programs on the recovered drive I will receive today prior to my transferring?Or is there a more efficient way of doing this.

Sep 1, 2009Ok so here it goes.
The situation I'm in is pretty akward and it's quite a long story but I'll try my best to explain everything.This afternoon I went to a friend's house to transfer some data to my external hard drive (MyBook Studio).Since my HD is formatted as HFS+ and my mate owns a Windows PC, I'd asked him to install MacDrive.
When we plugged in my HD, Windows just didn't detect it. We tried all sorts of things, including rebooting.. but nothing seemed to help. No matter what we did. The damn thing just didn't detect my hard drive. Not even with MacDrive.
I desperately wanted to transfer some data to my HD since I'd drove quite a while to get there. So after a bit of Google research we decided to create a partition. My HD has a capacity of 1 TB and only about half of it was being used.So we went on and created a NTFS partition of 400 GB. Now Windows could detect the partition we'd just made.
Everything went fine, we could now transfer some data to my HD.Nevertheless.. when I got home and connected my HD to my Macbook Pro, Finder could only see the partition which we formatted as NTFS. The other 600 GB, which we hadn't touched.. is nowhere to be found.
There's quite a lot of important data on there so I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me.

Dec 27, 2009I have a 2006 macbook 2 GHz, upgraded to 4 gb ram and 160 HDD. I don't feel like i have enough space so i decided to purchase a new harddrive and decided a 500 GB would do me just fine Though, i have all my data on this harddrive. I was thinking on making a full disk Time Machine copy of my disk and then restoring the new harddisk with that copy. But i don't know where to place that copy, since it is like 130 GB which is quite a big archive.

Jun 26, 2014What can be done if Time Machine failed to save certain data to external hard disk, but I do have the old hard drive? I have a new IMac 10.9.2. The old IMac was hit by lightning/surge. Restored data from external LaCie disk but some information is missing. Apparently Time Machine did not save it to the external disk, or we just can't locate it. We do haves the old hard disk and will put it in a box to be able to access it.
Is partitioning the answer?

Apr 24, 2012I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

Jun 22, 2012I am using a Mac Mini with OS X 10.7. I am having an issue with an external disk that was previously used as my main file source with an older Mac Mini. It seems there is a certain folder on the disk that I can't open or access that contains my lossless music files. When I look at the permissions it doesn't let me set them and also doesn't show "me", with the name I use to login to the system, as having access, or even showing up in the permissions on GetInfo.

Apr 11, 2012I would like to back up my Blu-Rays to a hard drive in some kind of .iso or similar format, potentially for viewing through a player such as VLC. They are all mine and bought legally, but I have a few Region A Blu-Rays in my collection (which is mostly Region B). My question thus has two points:
Is there a good program for ripping Blu-Rays into either an .iso --type format or some kind of Video.TS -type file structure?
Can anyone recommend a good external Blu-Ray drive for my Macbook, preferably that plays discs from all regions (or at least A and B)?

Jun 26, 2010I just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.
So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).
Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.
A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?

All is well and it looks like my new computer is a mirror of the old (tested for a week now). If I turn on Time Machine with the new MBP using the same hardrive as the former, will the files remain and be accessible? Presently, I can only access the old files by going into the hard drive through Finder and even then, most are locked.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Receive An Error While Trying To Partition Hard-drive Back To One?
Apr 5, 2012I have messed around with using bootcamp and and disk utlity to create partitions for Ubuntu. I decided to erase the extra partition and give all the space back to my macintosh HD. I go to the partition tab in disk utility and drag the macintosh box to fill the whole box and then hit apply. After a few moments I then recieve the error saying: "Partition failed with the error: Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed." I ran a verfiy disk on my macintosh hd and then recieve these errors:
Invalid volume file count
(It should be 545026 instead of 544821)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 140857 instead of 140673)

Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the Mac OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility. I then command R while boot and repair the drive. Tried resizing the partition again and same error. I have spent some time googling what people have done but find this problem occuring with alot of people upgrading to Lion or something. I'm on a 2011-late macbook pro that came with lion. I have tried things such as doing the Lion restore and booting in command S and typing fsck -fy for a repair. Nothing work.

Apr 28, 2012New computer as graduation present from parents, I'm so excited yayayay, blah blah blah. 17-inch MacBook Pro, newest version, running 10.7.3. It's so shiny and everything. Etc Was checking on hard disk space to make sure I wasn't going crazy copying over all my music and etc. But the number given by a simple ⌘I on the HD was... suspiciously low.
I know ~/Music, ~/Pictures and ~/Desktop add up to about 120 GB alone, and it seemed implausible that /Applications, /Library and everything else would be so small in comparison. System Profiler confirmed this, suggesting total hard disk space used was closer to 200 GB: But this breakdown really doesn't help me much—file type is a lot less informative than where those files actually are. And I also found myself seriously doubting that there was nothing on my computer that wasn't audio, movies, photos, apps or backups.

And got a third answer. One that seems to be the most accurate of the three, but I have to admit I'm easily swayed by computer things in monotype with lots of /s and ~s flying around So what is actually going on here and why doesn't my computer seem to know how much hard disk space it actually has free—if such a concept even exists anymore in the brave new lionworld?
