OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing Permissions - Unable To Attach Hard Drive?
Jul 15, 2012
I just bought a new 27" 3.4GHz i7 iMac to replace my agin iMac running Snow Leopard. Every time I turn the sharing on so that I can access the iMac and the attached hard drives from my other computer all the permissions explode to in infix able stse where I have to flatten the drive and reinstall Lion. I've spent hours on the phone with Apple, troubleshooting, running bits of code in the terminal all with the same result which is the permission going ****** (including bad .kext files) Any ideas out there or should I just go for a replacement iMac?

I accidentally removed my access to my hard drive in the "get info" page. On the bottom where it says 'you have custom access' under sharing and permissions I removed myself (clicked the little minus sign). Now I can't open anything and the desktop is complete empty. How do I turn my access back on?

I have recently upgraded my computer. My external hard drive, a LaCie 320GB, is full of stuff that I want to get rid of. Can't delete it. Looked into the permissions and it turns out they belong to an unknown user. I tried clicking the little lock and trying to change permissions, but it will not let me interact with the drop down menu. Â
I believe there is a terminal command to reset permissions locally, however, I cannot figure out how to do so on an external drive.Â

I'm having trouble setting the sharing priveleges on an external drive connected to my mac with snow leopard. My Drive is an external NTFS formatted drive. I can share the drive across the wifi network just fine if I have the guest account turned on, but I want to restrict access to certain folders using "sharing only" user accounts.I want to use SMB sharing. What I have is a folder called Movies that I want to share across the wifi with my housemates via a user account called "house" only I have another folder called "iPhone shite" (no kidding) that I want to share via a user account called "devacct" only I have set permissions for Sys Admin(Read and Write). Admin(Write Only Dropbox), and Everyone(No Access)When a user logs into the mac over the wifi, what happens is that even though I have enabled sharing for both users, and turned off the guest account, regardless of what permissions are set for each of these users, "devacct" can see the Movies folder and "house" can see the iPhone shite folder. This is not what I want. What also happens is that when I set the permissions, they do not save even though I click the lock. The extra user permissions disappear and the basic permissions reset to default.

I have 2 pc's and a minimac. I want to share them on my home network. I have a new 3TB external hard drive that I want to store everything on. I want to write to it from all computers. I want some files to be shared such as photoshop illustrator and premiere pro from both pc's and mac. Lastly I want to use time machine. Am I asking too much? The wife refuses to learn mac at this time. Maybe in the future then I can turn the pc's into a boat anchor.

I'd like to be able to view a folder's info and have the the lockpad remain unlocked. This is so I can change permissions much faster.I am not having the easiest time with the custom access panel, because I have to reopen it multiple times so be able to get the settings correct. For instance, I tried adding a user but it would not show up so I closed the Info window and reopened it. The user finally showed up, but then I had to `unlock` this to make further changes. This is when keeping it unlocked would make things easier for my privileges.

I am using a Mac Mini (mid-2011) running Lion Server 10.7.4. I have noticed lately that when I check files the Sharing & Permissions portion using Get Info on my files I find that there are two lines for each user on my computer. The first set of lines says Read & Write which I actually selected. The second set of lines says Custom. When I check I have the list Read & Write, Read, Custom. When I try to change Custom I cam select new option No Privileges Info. For the other users I am able to delete the extra line once I select No Privileges Info.
However even though I have more than one line I cannot delete the extra line for the main user. I will try and delete the extra line for the main user logged in as someone else that has what I have defined as admin privileges (reason I have more than one user). This really concerns me because this issue is causing problems with me adding or removing files as needed in the terminal. When I try I get this funky error:
"Dubious permissions on file (skipping): filename with duplicate entries for a user."
This is happening more and more even though I am not changing the file permissions that I am aware of.

I used a trick, long since lost I'm afraid, to tell the Finder to display the UNIX path name of the current directory at the top of the Finder window. For example, a finder window with my Documents folder selected(i.e. "in" the Documents folder) normally shows the special Documents folder icon and the name "Documents".What the trick would have it show instead is:
 "/Users/cprice53/Documents"Â
I've started over with a clean install of Lion (jury still out on the wisdom of this)so even if the setting would still work, I don't know how to make it. how to do this in Lion?

I'm having a series of problems. First some intermittent audio problems with Garageband, then, then some external drives won't mount, and now I can't sync to my disk from the iMac. I've run Disk Utitilies a few times and when I do Verify Disk Permissions, it finds a list of things to fix, I then hit Repair Disk Permissions and it fixes them, and then hit Verify Disk, and it say the disk appears ok. When I do Verify Disk Permissions again though, it finds another long list of things to fix. Is this serious? What should my next step be? Should I reinstall the entire system?

I am having problems ejecting the external hard drive that I use to back up my laptop. It is a 2012 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5. My external hard drive is a WD 2 TB My Book Studio. I use it to back up my laptop with Time Machine. Every time I try to eject my disk now I am told that "The disk (Diskname) wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it." I have tried some solutions like to stop Spotlight from indexing the disk and to try and turn off TimeMachine, but neither of these worked. The only thing that has worked so far is to log out of my user name and log back in with a guest user and eject it from there. This takes up a lot of time and is ultimately not really a sustainable way of working on my computer.Â

I have a g5 ppc running the newest OSX. Somehow my startup folder got corrupted and my computer would not start up. so I did a restore from time machine. The restore worked ok. I have 2 external hard drives attached to my computer, one for time machine and one for iTunes and movies. After restore and restart my computer said the hard drive attatched could not be repaired by disk utility. I did not ask it to fix anything. Now, I don't have permission to write to my external hard drive on the non time machine hard drive. When I get info, the lock on the bottom is not available, and I can't modify anything. Can I fix this by going into the terminal?

I'm trying to edit permissions on a folder via the Server App, and having some trouble. I can access all of the other folders on the shared volume and edit them just fine, but on one folder the OK button is always grayed out. Here's what I'm doing:Â In Server App, selecting the server under StorageChoosing the drive I want to editSelecting the folder I wantUnder the gear, choosing Edit Permissions. It shows me the list of users just fine and I can see that there's a problem, but no matter what changes I make it won't let me click OK. It also won't let me click + to add a new user. This works fine on all of the other folders on this same drive. Should I just reset all of the ACLs for that folder in the Terminal and try again?

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

It's with sadness and deep regret that I must put my 9 year old Dual G4 out to pasture.
I picked up a mac mac mini and it will be performing nearly all the same functions as the G4, including file serving and being the Time Machine source.
Question. Today, I have my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a FW400 WD hard drive. Time Machine backs up that data to another WD FW 400 hard drive.
Moving to the mini, I'll have to make the external drives USB2. No big deal.
But purely from a set up perspective... Am I better off keeping things as is, keeping the files on an external drive and backup up to an external drive? Or should I put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on the mini hard drive? Just looking for perhaps the best setup, etc.

I just bought a new 15" MBP and Airport Extreme Base Station. I blugged a USB hub into it and 3 external hard drives into that. It will recognize 2 of them but not the 3rd. The only difference I can see is that the 3rd is a 2 bay enclose with 2 500GB's JBODed into 1 drive. The other 2 are single drive enclosures.

I have a G5 with two hard drives and would like to store photos and music on the second hard drive, accessible to the G5, my MacBook Pro, and Apple TV. I do have a system installed on it to boot from if necessary, but for the most part it's just a second internal data drive. I thought it would be best to put the files on it here:Â
/Users/Shared/Music
/Users/Shared/PicturesÂ
I'm finding that I can't just move and rename any photo from either computer, but sometimes there are permission restrictions, even though the Get Info window shows permissions on the files and folders are wide open. What's the best location for fully shared files? The root level of the second drive?Â

I have a Windows PC (w/ Vista Home Premium) and a new 15" MacBook Pro. Just bought the new Airport Extreme Wireless Base Station. Installed Airport software on the PC. Works great. Macbook works great for surfing the internet on both.
I have a WD 120GB Passport USB hard drive I want to share on the base station. I know it is designed for this.
Here is the problem:
I plug the USB hard drive in the base station and it starts flashing yellow. If I check Airport with my PC or Mac it says there is a drive error. The Hard drive is formatted for NTFS.
I think a base station can not read a NTFS format correct??? If not and I have to format the drive for a MAc as NFS Journaled than how is the PC going to be able to read it???
Is it possible for a Mac AND a PC to share files off of the drive???
I called Apple tech support and the guy I spoke to had no idea about drive formats at all. He was worthless.
Apple advertises this base station for a Mac AND a PC.
If I plug the drive into the Mac or PC it works great of course. You just have to copy files to the Mac as a Mac can not write to a NTFS drive. Easily done.
What do I need to do to make it work???

Other than switching the backup hard drive between 2 Macs is there way the hard drive can be shared over the network for the purpose of using Time Machine? My external 1TB drive has two partitions. I'd use each one for a different computer. Right now I'm pulling the plug and switching it to the machine I want to back up. It would be nice if I did not have to do that.

I tried running blackmagic design's disk speed test on our Mac pro ssd boot drive only to be told that the drive was read only. looking at the disk info I saw this:
admin: r&w
system: read only
wheel: ro
everyone: ro
I changed system to r&w to allow me to use the disk test. I would have expected to see (me) somwehere in the access list but I'm not there and I can't add myself. Is there a way to rest the drive's permissions to the default settings? Or what is the best solution to wipe the drive and start over?
