OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Archive Email
May 24, 2012How can I archive my email?

View 2 RepliesI wonder how others handle 'server overload'? After many years I have a lot of IMAP email on the remote server, and the data charges are getting high. I see that one can 'export' a mailbox, but I am not sure that does what I want, which is to take old messages from the server after a certain date (1.1.2012, say), leaving them locally available, but no longer on the server. How is this being addressed by other users?

I operate a small business, and need to keep an archive of all email on my computer for at least one year (not on the cloud, as I live on a small island and our internet service is sporadic). I prefer to manually delete all email after 12 or 13 months. It seems like Apple Mail no longer allows this?

when I select the archive button from the tool bar, does mail store the particular email message on my hard drive, or is it stored in a mailbox in the cloud? Does trying to understand actually happens.
Since I upgraded to Lion I can't figure out how to archive my mail folders. Is it no longer possible to do this? If I can't do that, is there another way to get my mail folders out of mail but still have them somewhere if I need them?

So i've done a "clean reinstall" of Lion and restored some of my files manually from TM backup located on an external hardrive by dragging them over via Finder. Now I want to delete all old TM backups on my ext hardrive and only save the last backup (the one I did before the Lion reinstall).
If I save the latest TM backup folder (named ~/Backups.backupdb/~/2012-04-11-233905) and delete all the older ones – would that save my entire last backup? Or does that folder contain aliases to other files in previous backup folders? i.e. does the last created Time Machine backup folder contain all files from the last backup?

I've recently noticed that conversations that I've archived in a gmail acount are no longer being included when viewing a thread (conversation). If multiple messages from a conversation are in the inbox, they are included. If a message has been "deleted" (archived in the gmail account) it is not included in the conversation. I may be crazy but I seem to remember this not being the case earlier.
Since the gmail account is accessed using exchange, the "All Mail" folder (where archived messages are stored) is accessable.
I have a Macbook that is about 4 years old. The charger doesn't connect and charge properly - It works if I hold it on the computer. My question is - how can I tell if I need a new charger or if it is the charging dock in the computer. The magnetic connection does not seem to be clicking in the way it is suppose to. Any one else have experience with this who can offer some ideas?

I have two mailboxes in Mail on my MacBook Air that I've been using to store old messages. There are 2 folders - In Archive and Out Archive - that I've been manually moving messages to for years. Combined there's more than 140,000 messages and it's taking up 17GB of my HD space. Can I simply move the mailboxes to an external drive and be able to access them when needed (which isn't often)?

Lion is just too much for me. Can I download to my previous Snow Leopard by using a SL disk to perform an archive and reinstall? Will this keep my files, folders, programs, and settings intact?
View 7 Replies View RelatedGmail is my default email client. I'm trying to send an email blast to my groups in address book. When I right click on a group, and click "send to...", none of the email address show up in the TO field, only the name of the Group appears.Previously, I used mac mail and clicking "send to" group would result in all email addresses going right where they're supposed to go.I don't know how I changed the client to Gmail, but if I can't get it to work, I'd like to switch it back.

I downloaded a Zip archive file, but when I double-click on it to unzip, it turns into another zipped file (CPGZ Archive). I tried the download twice, with the same result. I don't have the Archive Utility?

Recently I have not been able to send email using my Verizon outgoing server on the Lion email client. I can receive OK, but the server keeps rejecting something and a window pops up asking me to select a different SMTP server. Before I called Verizon, I decided to see if there were any free eMail clients I could use as a test and the new Eudora showed up when I did a "Bing" search.
I just installed Eudora and after a very quick setup, I sent a message using the Verizon server without any problem, the mail coming into both the Eudora and Lion mailboxes. So the problem is not with Lion, but with the Lion eMail client. I know Verizon does not officially support Macs, but since Eudora works, I have localized the issue to the standard Lion email client.
Anyone else have a similar experience with Verizon or some other ISP in not being able to send eMail?
First, Eudora is an answer. Second - I would like to resolve the problem with the Lion eMail client - it must be some obscure server setting. I know that it used to work, but I am not sure whether it was with Lion or Snow Leopard. Usually when I send an eMail, I use Cloud and was using MobileMe so I did not notice whether or not Verizon's SMTP server was working.
I noticed it today when I could not reply to an eMail that came in on one of my Verizon accounts.
Here is the Eudora [URL]..Click Mac Disk Image and voila! there you go.

I'm going to upgrade my OS from Panther to Tiger. With "Archive and install" does it compress the old system before putting it in the Bibliotech. I'm worried that I won't have enough space left on my HD to hold the two systems. For the moment I have about 8.5 GB of free space with no app's running.(after a reboot) Or can I archive the old system to my ext. HD ( How) I'm not planning to install " other languages" or "other Printers" with the Tiger install.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a sizable DVD collection (over 400 DVDs) that I want to get rid of. I may be moving to a much smaller apartemnt, and I'm just getting tired of moving these boxes/shelves all over the country, and having them take up space (especially since I watch them so rarely). I recently got rid of my entire CD collection (ripped to Apple Lossless) and find I don't miss the physical CDs at all. I'm hoping to have a similar experience w/ the DVDs. I want to move toward an all-digital existence (Kindle/iBooks, iTunes Music, Archived DVDs). I'm getting sick of storing/displaying physical media.
I have a nice home theater, so I don't want to rip compressed iPhone/AppleTV quality versions of these DVDs. I want true archival quality, as good as having the actual physical DVD (with extras, 5.1/7.1, all audio tracks, etc....if it's possible, of course).
I plan to soon buy a Mac Mini (whenever they're updated), that will store/run all these DVDs. I also want the option to re-burn physical DVDs from the digital copies (I don't think I'll be utilizing it, but I like to not back myself into a corner).
CAN I do this?
If so, what's the best way? Anyone have a similar experience?
I'd like to archive my mailboxes. I want to keep the email messages, but not in Mail. Is there a way to archive them outside of Mail? I'm using Tiger 10.4.11 on a G4 800.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI zipped up about 3 gigs into a 2.24 gig zip file. I did it with stuffit deluxe, and I had no problems opening it. Then, I sent the file over the network to my roomate and reformatted/reinstalled OS X Tiger, then d/l'd the file back from my roomate.
Now, it won't open! I'm just using the standard OS X BOM ArchiveHelper... it gets like 75% done and says:
Unable to unarchive "filename.zip" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.)
I am trying to use the built in Archive Utility which is called 'compress' and is the same as zip.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my powerbook to leopard about a year ago using Archive & Install. I just read that deleting your old archive is a good way to free up space, provided your machine is running well. I haven't had any problems. Has anybody done this that can provide any advice for or against deleting the folder?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently did a archive/install on my macbookpro. I was wondering what are some good things to do after this task is done. I've already installed all the updates. I repaired permissions and for some reason errors are still being found?
View 1 Replies View RelatedRepairing permissions is still coming up with errors in the log?? I thought after doing this, would give me a clean OS?? I'm so confused.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to clean up some space on my computer, and my emails are taking a lot of space (I save most of them, and have done so for 5+ years). My strategy was to make a Smart Folder, give the rule "Older than a date". Set the date for about 1.5years ago. This made a mailbox with about 67K+ emails. Then I selected all of them and deleted them. When I quit email it fails to quit and crashes instead and when I open the program again the emails are still in the Smart Mailbox.
Any thoughts on the best way to accomplish this? Perhaps a third-party program?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had to re-install 10.3 on my G5 after the hard drive icon icon disappeared from my desktop and the finder froze. Its back to normal now after I did a clean install of 10.3, choosing the archive and install option. What should be my next step? How do I get all my stuff in the 'previous system' folder (my music, photos, etc.) to the main account? Can I somehow log in my old account with all my stuff and delete the new one I had to make? What's the easiest way to do this?
