I have this nifty device called a "Magic Jack" [URL] which turns any USB port on any internet-connected computer into a hard phone line.
I'm now behind a network at school, and it's not working properly.
Customer service says that I need to "open ports such and such, and forward them to my IP"... but they don't know how to do that with a mac.
I'm going to be spending a few days in the the middle of nowhere where my only option for the internet is using a landline telephone. I have no idea how this works...would this be the only thing I need?

i have a new MBP and for some weird reason the last few days the dead phone jack stopped working when i plug it in it almost sounds like a really snatched cd. When reboot it works again. Its happened a few times now wondering if anyone has run into this problem? its starting happening to the speaker as well a jumping in the sound. Can't make anything out. the only thing i can think of that i've done differently is i repaired the permissions and ran a weekly clean up with the program MainMenu.

I'd like to use my mac (Imac and Macmini) for sending/receiving faxes and perhaps for CPI (computer phone integration).I have obtained a USRobotics usb modem. The question I have is do I need to connect that modem to the same connection (using a splitter) to where my telephone handset is ?If I connect this usb modem from the macmini to the phone line (not where the handset is), can I then use the Imac to connect to the phone for fax/cpi|? My right Shift Key is acting as a keyboard shortcut to show the desktop. Any time it is pressed, it shows the desktop (not even having to push cmd-shift or some other variation). I've restored keyboard shortcuts to defaults, repaired permissions, and restarted my computer several times. Nothing works. I'm not sure if this was something I did in Snow Leopard a while back that now can't disable in Lion?

This problem happens when I'm working between several applications at a time. I'm actively working in the current app when OSX automatically pulls me out and shows me something in a background app that suddenly requires attention, like a dialog box. Quite often I open or save files while working on something else, ususally in fullscreen mode. Moments later, I'm disruptively switched to a file that just opened in another application, or I'm told that something was saved, updated, installed, etc. This automatic switch interrupts my typing or commands in the app I was currently engaging, and has become a major problem.Â
Is there a way to keep OSX from pulling me out of my current application?

In fullscreen preview, when I select the second or third view from the left ("thumbnails" or "table of contents") the document leaves space for the sidebar to appear. The issue comes whenever I switch from the app. Once I come back, the sidebar autohides leaving the linen background where the sidebar once was. What's the point in leaving that unocupied space if the sidebar is going to autohide? How do I disable autohide sidebar in the "thumbnails" and "table of contents" view?
