OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Disable Autohide Sidebar In Preview
Apr 12, 2012
In fullscreen preview, when I select the second or third view from the left ("thumbnails" or "table of contents") the document leaves space for the sidebar to appear. The issue comes whenever I switch from the app. Once I come back, the sidebar autohides leaving the linen background where the sidebar once was. What's the point in leaving that unocupied space if the sidebar is going to autohide? How do I disable autohide sidebar in the "thumbnails" and "table of contents" view?

Just got my first ever mac, and loving it so far. One thing is annoying me though, the way the sidebar always pops up in preview.app when opening more than 1 image file.
I can choose to hide it, but as soon as I open a second image, it'll pop up again, taking up valuable space on my screen that I'd much rather devote to the image itself.
Does anyone know of a way of permanently disabling it? Perhaps a terminal command?

I'd like to make sidebar visible in Preview v. 4.2 every time I open a PDF document. In Preferences, the "Open Sidebar Only for TOC" is unchecked and according to this thread, it seems that Sidebar should always open otherwise. Mine doesn't & I have to open manually for each file.

There are following problems with two PDF Files. When I open the PDF with preview 5.0.3 in main window there is an other chapter as I have mark in the sidebar. There is allway a different of one chapter between mainwindow and sidebar.
This failure are in two PDFs.The PDFs are manuals of DEVONthink, not the help of DEVONthink. There is no problem when I open this PDFs with Acrobat Reader 9.5.0. Sidebar and main windwow the same chapter when I mark it in sidebar.Â
I use Mac OS X 10.6.8. Can someone give an explanation of this bug ?Â

I have several PDF docs with several annotations in them. When I show the sidebar in Preview it lists page, type, date, and author, but does not display the words in the annotations! With a long of annotations that only identify themselves by "Text", it's laborious to find the note one is looking for. (One has to manually step through each one at a time!)

Is there any way to disable the universal icon preview in the Leopard Finder?
For example, I want my .doc, .rtf, and .docx files to appear in Finder as they do in Mail - as icons and not a tiny, unreadable preview of the file; that's what QuickLook is for if you ask me.

To stop the lagging of broswing server folders using OSX column view, I'd like to disable the 'icon preview' in OSX as the caching if the icon previews is what is grinding out fileserver browsing on our AFP server down. In Leopard 10.5 this option/checkbox is visible under the Finders View Options but on our Tiger Macs, the icon preview checkbox is missing?
Under View Options there are only the other two checkboxes visible which are the preview column and show icons. In Tiger you can turn off Icon Preview for desktop items as the icon preview option is available when you ctrl+click on the desktop but I cant seem to do it for anywhere else, in particular for when I browse server folders.

When preview opens it has a list of the last 10 things I had open with it.Â
However, I do not want to ever see anything I have ever opened and the list is bothersome to my OCD.Â
How do I disable this "feature" as I do with all other programs?Â
Is my only option to set the default program for images, PDFs and everything else to another program that allows me to disable the history?

what font is used in the Lion Sidebar?Â
You can see it all over the OS for example, it's also used in Mail to show all the folders and Mailboxes...Â
I know how to adjust the size, I just want to know the name of the Font.

I added some folders in finder sidebar a while back, and suddenly, they disappeared, such as the documents shortcut. When I try to put them back, finder removes it again. Also if I go to Finder - Preferences and try to check the documents shortcut to appear in sidebar again, the checkbox doesn't work. I'm pretty sure this happened after I synchronized my iPhone for the first time. How can I add favorites to the finder sidebar again?

one of the most convenient things for me as a photoshopper about Snow Leopard was to be able to have sort cuts in the finder side bar under "Places" so i could just drag the image i wanted to open to the left onto the App icon and it would open it from there. NOW I have drag it to the dock to open or open the dropdown menu... both slower. I am not happy about this.... Is there a way to get this function back... I have looked and looked and can't find it!Â

My finder window's sidebar appears to be locked and I cannot resize it. I've read that when putting my mouse in the line between the sidebar and the files area to the right it should change to a bar cursor that I can then use to resize the sidebar. But the cursor never changes when I do this so I cannot resize the sidebar. Any suggestions to re-enable this?

I have Mail on my wife's MacBook Pro (running Lion 10.7.4) set up to access our host's mail server via IMAP. The inbox appears in the sidebar as 'Guided Tours' under 'Inbox'. She's set up a whole bunch of custom mailboxes which normally appear in her sidebar under the heading 'Guided Tours'. After shutting the Mac down for a week while she was away the only mailboxes there are Sent and Trash. The mail, in all its folders and subfolders, is all there on the server - I can see it via our host's horrible webmail interface. I've looked at Mail's preferences and come up with nothing - 'Mailbox behaviours' etc. are no help. The mailboxes had also disappeared from inside [URL] so I restored them from the last Time Machine backup from before she went away, but Mail wouldnt see them after quitting and relaunching or even after restarting the Mac. I then tried restoring the entire ~/Library/Mail folder from TM, but still no good. Finally, I deleted the whole account and recreated it from scratch, and this is where it gets even more interesting... This appeared to work - hurrah! Back in business with all the mailboxes showing as they should, and apparently fully functional... until I looked at her Mac about an hour later - when it hadnt even been to sleep, let alone shut down - and they'd vanished again! This time though, the mailboxes are still there in the INBOX.mbox folder... except they're all empty! For what it's worth, as well as being there on the server, the mailboxes are, fortunately, all accessible and usable from her iPad and iPhone, so she can use those for now.

I've dragged a few often-used files to my finder sidebar, as I did in Snow Leopard, but they keep disappearing. After a little experimentation, I realize that they drop off the sidebar as soon as I change the file in any way. For example, if I have a Pages doc in the sidebar and I open and edit it, as soon as I save the change, it drops off the sidebar. I can see this happening in real time.Â

I have a problem with Lion Mail not showing any network activity at the bottom of the left sidebar. It always stays blank like there is nothing going on. But the Activity Window (alt+cmd+0) shows all the activity going on just like it should. I would like to keep the Activity window closed and only use the sidebar to get visual feedback of what's going on.Â

I have a Time Capsule with an external drive connected on the Time Capsule's USB port. On that drive, I have a disk image that I use for a backup clone. When I eject the back up disk image from my MacBook Pro, the Finder's Sidebar entry for the disk image begins to "flash" back and forth between "Macintosh HD" and the name of the disk image. The flashing item never disappears, unless I restart. The effect is shown in this YouTube video that I found when searching about this issue:
[URL]
This issue is replicated on my wife's MacBook Pro, also running Lion. I recently updated to Lion (10.7.3). This issue did not occur in Snow Leopard.
