OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Does MacBook Pro Keep Making A Two-tone Beep Once A Minute
Mar 24, 2012
My MacBook Pro: Model Name:MacBook Pro Model Identifier:MacBookPro8,2 Processor Name:Intel Core i7 Processor Speed:2.4 GHz Number of Processors:1 Total Number of Cores:4 L2 Cache (per Core):256 KB L3 Cache:6 MB Memory:4 GBÂ
For the last couple of days, every minute, my Mac has been making a two-tone beep. I have absolutely no idea why. There are no jumping icons to tell me that a program wants my attention and I have tried closing all my applications, the problem does not go away.Â

My Macbook is awesome, absolutely no complaints except for this loud "Ding-dong" noise that comes at really random times. It's sort of fuzzy, like a recording on a cell phone (which I'm sure it's not), and it's just a higher pitched beep then a slightly lower pitched beep.
I've searched everywhere and I haven't found any posts or anything at all like this. I can have no applications open, other than background processes (I'll list those below) and it'll make the noise. So I sort of assume it's either some ridiculous Leopard malfunction or that it's one of the Preference Panes I have installed. If anyone has this same problem let me know, I'm going to start recording exactly what's open whenever it makes the noise and try to find something in common between them.

After having repairing my hard disc with Utilities (having started up from my Install Disc holding C key) and being okay for a day, the thing seemed to crash again. Came home and the machine was off, not just asleep. Tried to start up, heard a single long beep tone, then the regular start-up chord, but it just hung. Then started up off the Install Disc holding D key, did the Appple Hardware Test, Extended, and that just stalled after a while - as it did each time before - and also the Mac was making a not-good-sounding whirring, hum noise. Started again off the Install Disc, this time holding C key, went to Utilities to try a Repair again, but this time the hard disk was not even showing in the Disk Utility!

Last summer my wife and I purchased a Macbook Pro that supposedly had milk spilled on it. I'm technologically inclined enough to know that it was a very good deal. So we bought it to be used as her main computer because she doesn't do much beyond managing her iPhone, Facebook, and word processing, like most College Students. At the time I thought my Macbook was more than adequate but I've come to realize that there is a substantial difference between the two machines. I'm going to college as well for video production and I've not noticed the difference until I edited on hers while mine was in the shop. Anyway, long story short, I want to really get her computer repaired and trade her, which she's fine with she thinks my Mac is 'cuter' anyway... So I now realize this whole first little bit was unnecessary but nonetheless I'll leave it.
It has a few issues but functions perfectly as a desktop computer, we have a bluetooth keyboard & mouse for it. I really want to make it more mobile. But here's the list of the issues:
1) The 'o' and the '0' button do not work at all.
2) When you first turn it on sometimes it makes the tone that button is being held down and if you put the cursor in a text box it continuously types ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo until you hit backspace on the computer then it's totally fine.
3) It doesn't totally go to sleep. Even if it's closed you can still blatantly hear the hard drive clicking back on like you just opened it every minute or so and if you tell it to go to sleep while it's open it'll wake itself up within a minute.
4) When it's unplugged and not off the battery lasts less than 2 hours at best with an average of about an hour.
5) and the back lit keyboard only really glows in the middle of the keyboard supposedly where the spill occurred. The other keys do glow but not nearly as bright.
I think that's about it. I've taken it to the local Apple Store and they said that I can get just the keyboard replaced for about $150 then if there's no major damage we can send it off to get the other issues fixed because it's still under warranty until next July. However with the liquid spill that voids it which I'm sure you know. But if they crack it open and it's all nasty then they won't do anything and it could cost up to $1,200 to fix which is still a much cheaper deal for a machine with the same specs. I also have a 500 GB hard drive waiting to go in this bad boy. It's a Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro Model A1260, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB Memory, GeForce 8600 at 256 MB. Hope my descriptions where good enough I have a feeling that the milk spill has affected the logic board which is a hefty fee. And I plan on taking to to the Mac Authorized dealers here in town, like Mac Authority, to see if they'd be cheaper.

Since about the 3rd day after I got my macbook pro the computer has been making cracking sounds when I open it. When it first started it just simply made one clicking sound when the hinge is halfway open. Now however, When it is open it makes cracking sounds that don't stop ( open 15 cracking sounds per open). Is this a serious issue that I need to address with my local (and very mean) genius or is this issue not going to continue to get progressively worse. If this does continue to get worse will the hinge crack open? what is this worst that could happen?

I bought a 13 macbook pro a few weeks ago. My first mac, and I absolutely love it, but I noticed a strange thing occur a few times I restart or power up my mac. I came home after work and turned the computer on, I pressed the power button and the computer let out a loud, drawn out beep, and didnt turn on. I pressed teh button again and finally the start up sound went off, the disk drive spun, and everything ran smoothly. This has happened on more than one occasion, and just the other night, I installed an update and restarted the machine. As soon as the machine restarted, the beeping went off again, followed by the start up noise, followed by the grey loading screen. Anyone else familiar or experience this strange, loud, drawn out beep when they restart or try to turn their machine on? I'm just wondering if I need to be concerned or if this happens to others?

Not sure from where in my macbook it's coming, but it started recently. The only thing that changed recently is that i relocated it to a different city, but i don't see why that would cause this. Clicking isn't really the right word to describe the noise...it's like a sweeping click. "Shtock." And it gets louder if i increase the volume on my computer, but it's definitely not coming from any application. And it usually goes off every minute, but sometimes there are breaks of two minutes or so.

It takes my late 2008 MacBook Pro about 56 seconds to boot up. Is there any way to speed up the process? Keep in mind it recently just had a fresh install of OS X Mavericks, so there isn't that much on here to slow it down.

Macbook air, when turning it off, it started to make 3 beep sounds. The fans blow heavily and it keeps on 3 beeps and a pause and the 3 beeps again and again. Some pages say that when it is three beeps it is something with bad blocks, which means something is wrong with the RAM.
1) How can something suddenly go wrong with the RAM just turning it on.
2) How can you fix this yourself?, Instead of going to the Macstore Repair? I tried resetting the PRAM by (by pressing Cmd+Opt(ALT)+R+P) Nothing happens!
3) Saw on another page that it had been an issue for a MBP user and changing or taking out the ramblocks could fix the issue, anyone tried this with Macbook air?

If I change the desktop background in the interval of every one minute, will it have a impact on battery life? I notice there's even an option for every 5 seconds. Surely, Apple must feel confident in the battery life of the MBP if there is such an option. I like seeing a new image every so often, but don't want to sacrifice too much battery. What do you feel is the best setting? Every 5 minutes? 15 min? 30 min? 1 hour?

I bought my new MacBook Alu., 2GHz, 2GB Ram, with OSX 10.5.6 about 5-6 weeks ago, and was pretty astonished about how long it takes for the thing to boot-up. Approx. 60-70 seconds (just over a minute). My old MacBook (white), with 1,8GHz, 1,25GB Ram, and Tiger, took about only half the time. (About the same number of Apps on both notebooks)Is this boot-up time of about 1 minute normal, or should I contact Apple Service?

Ok so to start off, my Macbook Pro is around 3 years old. With my original battery having been through 350+ cycles, I had to buy a replacement. So I did some research and found that the Fastmac battery was my best bet for a long-lasting, reliable battery. I would say that Ive had the Fastmac battery for a bout 6-7 months without any problems whatsoever. However, recently Ive been noticing the drastic change in battery life. I installed Coconut Battery yesterday and discovered that my current battery capacity is 2266mAh with the original capacity being 5800mAh and 213 cycles. I also should note that the battery drains 1% a minute with no programs running (besides the Activity Monitor, which showed no strange behavior). Now luckily for me, My Fastmac battery is under a 1 year warranty, however I just wanna verify that it is a fault with my battery and not anything on my Macbook's side causing the battery to drain so quick. The last thing I want is to receive my replacement and then have to go through the same process 6 months later.
Also here is the Battery Information from the System Profiler.
Battery Information:
Battery Installed:Yes
First low level warning:No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh):2266
Remaining Capacity (mAh):1414
Amperage (mA):-1449
Voltage (mV):11421
Cycle Count:213

I only have 2GB of RAM, but the CPU is a C2D @ 2.4Ghz. Should it take this long?

My shiny new retina macbook pro took 11 hours to transfer all my files over wireless to the new machine. I thought all software was current, and everything seems to be there. Â
When I opened iphoto for the first time, ...I cannot quite remember the message , but do remember it said iphoto needed to update and it would take about 3 minutes ?? Â
Well iphoto has given me the grey screen of death. I can see the side bar that is empty and the empty screen in the middle. I left it overnight and it was the same. My library is about 50 GB. I force quit and it now has a progress bar and is now stuck at step 5/Â 95% for another 30 minutes.Â

Just curious if anyone else had a strange beep after closing the lid. It doesn't seem to do it every time. Seems like it happens more when I have been watching video or doing things that bump temp and fan speeds. It is just a quiet little "beep". Only does it once.

My macbook pro (2.4 summer '07) booted this morning with a highly alarming single BEEEEP, before booting normally.
Is it preparing its deathbed and reciting its last words or is there a specific little problem that has occurred? I'm frantically backing everything up (time capsule died last week which was also fun), preparing for the worst.

My MacBook Pro is running very slowly, sometimes more than a minute to open a webpage or access a link on the page. Using Safari and sometimes it freezes and the force quit window doesn't appear using option-command-escape. Then only holding down the power button shuts down the computer.Â

I've noticed this for a while, but just failed to write about it. Whenever I leave speakers/headphones or anything of that sort plugged into my MBA turned on without anything playing out of them, i hear this very faint beep every couple of seconds. When i turn the speakers off, it turns off, but usually i forget to and come back to hearing this super soft/faint beep. Any clue how to get rid of this? Is this an issue I should consult with Apple? And this happens regardless of whether or not i "mute" sound on my MBA.
