I feel a bit silly, but I've not been able to turn off the tone that happens after I turn on my iMac.
I've got the volume turned all the way down at the speaker icon, top right of screen

When the on button is pressed The fans start, but the screen doesn't even turn on. The Optical Drive still takes in Disks.

After having repairing my hard disc with Utilities (having started up from my Install Disc holding C key) and being okay for a day, the thing seemed to crash again. Came home and the machine was off, not just asleep. Tried to start up, heard a single long beep tone, then the regular start-up chord, but it just hung. Then started up off the Install Disc holding D key, did the Appple Hardware Test, Extended, and that just stalled after a while - as it did each time before - and also the Mac was making a not-good-sounding whirring, hum noise. Started again off the Install Disc, this time holding C key, went to Utilities to try a Repair again, but this time the hard disk was not even showing in the Disk Utility!

I lost the startup tone a couple days ago. I repaired permissions, did an SMC and PRAM reset and it makes the tone while doing the PRAM reset but the next time you turn it on it doesn't make a sound.

I know that in the past this question has been asked, but I was just wondering if anyone has figured out how to _change_ the sound, not turn it off. Although some folks might want to turn it off too.

My MacBook Pro: Model Name:MacBook Pro Model Identifier:MacBookPro8,2 Processor Name:Intel Core i7 Processor Speed:2.4 GHz Number of Processors:1 Total Number of Cores:4 L2 Cache (per Core):256 KB L3 Cache:6 MB Memory:4 GB
For the last couple of days, every minute, my Mac has been making a two-tone beep. I have absolutely no idea why. There are no jumping icons to tell me that a program wants my attention and I have tried closing all my applications, the problem does not go away.

Last summer my wife and I purchased a Macbook Pro that supposedly had milk spilled on it. I'm technologically inclined enough to know that it was a very good deal. So we bought it to be used as her main computer because she doesn't do much beyond managing her iPhone, Facebook, and word processing, like most College Students. At the time I thought my Macbook was more than adequate but I've come to realize that there is a substantial difference between the two machines. I'm going to college as well for video production and I've not noticed the difference until I edited on hers while mine was in the shop. Anyway, long story short, I want to really get her computer repaired and trade her, which she's fine with she thinks my Mac is 'cuter' anyway... So I now realize this whole first little bit was unnecessary but nonetheless I'll leave it.
It has a few issues but functions perfectly as a desktop computer, we have a bluetooth keyboard & mouse for it. I really want to make it more mobile. But here's the list of the issues:
1) The 'o' and the '0' button do not work at all.
2) When you first turn it on sometimes it makes the tone that button is being held down and if you put the cursor in a text box it continuously types ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo until you hit backspace on the computer then it's totally fine.
3) It doesn't totally go to sleep. Even if it's closed you can still blatantly hear the hard drive clicking back on like you just opened it every minute or so and if you tell it to go to sleep while it's open it'll wake itself up within a minute.
4) When it's unplugged and not off the battery lasts less than 2 hours at best with an average of about an hour.
5) and the back lit keyboard only really glows in the middle of the keyboard supposedly where the spill occurred. The other keys do glow but not nearly as bright.
I think that's about it. I've taken it to the local Apple Store and they said that I can get just the keyboard replaced for about $150 then if there's no major damage we can send it off to get the other issues fixed because it's still under warranty until next July. However with the liquid spill that voids it which I'm sure you know. But if they crack it open and it's all nasty then they won't do anything and it could cost up to $1,200 to fix which is still a much cheaper deal for a machine with the same specs. I also have a 500 GB hard drive waiting to go in this bad boy. It's a Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro Model A1260, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB Memory, GeForce 8600 at 256 MB. Hope my descriptions where good enough I have a feeling that the milk spill has affected the logic board which is a hefty fee. And I plan on taking to to the Mac Authorized dealers here in town, like Mac Authority, to see if they'd be cheaper.

I was attempting to gain access to an old external harddrive, so I downloaded a live CD. I changed the startup disk in the system preferences and restarted my computer. To my knowledge this was a one time change, meaning it would only target my DVD drive for one boot. So I used the live CD and I can't seem to eject it from my computer. Also, I can't force it to boot from my harddrive. I know keystrokes can initiate a different boot but nothing seems to work.
* While turning on the computer....
* option key
* C
* eject button
* Allowing the mac to boot into the live disk and attempting to eject the disk that way

I am having troubles booting from the Mac OS X Install Disc by holding down the "c" key at startup. Can I change the startup disc in Leopard to the DVD and then change it back to Macintosh HD after I am done doing what I need to do with the disc (no, not a reinstall of the OS). Is this possible? Will it work?

I have a MAC PRO 3,1 Quad-Core Intel Xeon, OS X6.8. Lately my startup tone has been soft and then non existent. I zap the PRAM and then reboot to a soft tone. Somewhat reassured that I have the tone. Why is the tone diminishing to non at all. I have not changed my volume settings. Is this a problem? Or am I just paranoid after 4 years of reliability?

My Macbook is awesome, absolutely no complaints except for this loud "Ding-dong" noise that comes at really random times. It's sort of fuzzy, like a recording on a cell phone (which I'm sure it's not), and it's just a higher pitched beep then a slightly lower pitched beep.
I've searched everywhere and I haven't found any posts or anything at all like this. I can have no applications open, other than background processes (I'll list those below) and it'll make the noise. So I sort of assume it's either some ridiculous Leopard malfunction or that it's one of the Preference Panes I have installed. If anyone has this same problem let me know, I'm going to start recording exactly what's open whenever it makes the noise and try to find something in common between them.

PB G4 12" OSX 10.4.11 - modem does not recognize dial tone. Connections OK.. Recently, the modem recongized dial tone and connected to internet, but, no sound of the dialing. Last time used modem, connected via DSL to internet OK, and AirPort OK..Today, internal Modem does not recognize 'dial up' dial tone, error message: check connections. Is it possible for the DLS connection to corrupt the dial up process?.. also, the SuperDrive has not worked in a month (cd will not go in).

Once in awhile i'll get what I assume is an alert on my iMac, but I don't know what it's for. This morning for example I turned on my iMac and I only had Safari open but I heard a two tone alert, but I seriously doubt that alert came from Safari. I'll hear that every once in awhile but I could never seem to figure what it's for? Do you guys have any idea where I can find out where that alert is coming from?

All of a sudden I no longer have the bell icon showing up on my itunes library. The odd thing is when I go to view>view options, "ringtones" is not even on the list of things to check. I don't know where it went. There used to be a bell icon next to the song and all you had to do was click on it and you could then make your ringtone. It used to be so easy. I even tried to right click on the song and go to create ringtone, but that doesn't show up either. Is there some setting I don't know about?

I'm new with this, My ibook plays the little loading tone when I turn it on but nothing else seems to happen. No more lights on the board no nothing the only thing that does s that it change the color of the charger plug, play the song and on the bottom where it goes the battery turn 3 lights like if it where loading something, I guess it means there is power in it. Also if n that moment I click on the mouse does like if it were doing something.
