MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.5 date and time set automatically to use a network time server (domain controller). After a few weeks of the end-user utilitizing it on their home network, the time reverts back to January 6, 2012. How can I set a secondary location if the first location is unreachable?

Computer: iMac 2.93 GHz Quad core i7, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD
There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I've looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):
1.I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
2.Would you do it differently or not at all about moving the home folder? I saw some posts about moving the entire home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected folders withing the home folder to take advantage of speed of SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document, music, iphoto, download, etc.) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website (**is this the same as creating an alias?):
cd
sudo cp -r Documents /Volumes/Master
sudo rm -rf Documents
sudo ln -s /Volumes/Master/Documents Documents
3.I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage
4.My main question and here is where I'm not sure what's best?
I want to speed up photoshop as much as possible? Should I make a partition on the internal HDD for a scartch disk? If so, how big? Is there a benefit to partitioning for scratch disc use? Should I not partition HDD and use for data and scratch? Any other way? I wish apple had a how to maximize use of the imac with HDD and SSD page!
What setting do I need to change to have the login window show the version number (a la 10.5.5) instead of my Mac's name?
can someone using 10.5.6 on a Mac released before the new MacBooks please do me a favour and go to /System/Library/PreferancePanes and check if EnergySaver.prefpane is version number 4.0?
im using the Energy Saver preference pane which came with the new MacBook's Leopard install and i want to put back the old one back which came with Leopard installed on my Core Duo MacBook Pro but i lost my back up! so i want to know if the version from 10.5.0 is the same as 10.5.6. i hope i made sense .
p.s. i dont backup the system with Time Machine so i cant go back in Time and get it .

I installed a trial of iWork 09 yesterday to get a feel for it, liked it so went out today and purchased the box from my local Apple Store. I know about the whole not needing a serial number now however it is asking me for one since the install on all three applications. I removed the trial and all evidence of it and restarted my macbook before installing the box.

I am so glad to have a mac with a modem to receive fax that make my work more efficient than before. But the problem is: The Apple USB modem have only one port that occupied my only telephone port in my house. But as there is hard to buy a phone-line adapter or separator in the stores anymore in my city. And I find that the software phone programs uses modem to make phone calls are "Dead".

View 3 Replies View RelatedTried bringing up a 2 minute QuickTime Tutorial on Apple's site with my new iMac set up connecting to the Net with a Dial-Up Modem.
However, after the video very slowly loaded it would stop after the initial few seconds of a start-up.
Does this mean it is impossible to view Web videos using a Dial-Up Modem?
PB G4 12" OSX 10.4.11 - modem does not recognize dial tone. Connections OK.. Recently, the modem recongized dial tone and connected to internet, but, no sound of the dialing. Last time used modem, connected via DSL to internet OK, and AirPort OK..Today, internal Modem does not recognize 'dial up' dial tone, error message: check connections. Is it possible for the DLS connection to corrupt the dial up process?.. also, the SuperDrive has not worked in a month (cd will not go in).

I really need a competent advise - my finances are limited and I need to know before spending money on this modem.

I'd love to be able to click numbers to dial, then just pick up my other line.
I moved my iTunes media folder to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMac's hard drive. The new one is located on a hard drive attached to my Airport Express. Since then, I keep getting messages stating that certain items weren't copied to my iPhone because the originals couldn't be found. When I check, the iTunes media folder has reverted to the location on my iMac's main hard drive.Â
How can I prevent this? At best this is annoying, but it also is using up hard drive space unnecessarily. Is this behavior avoidable, or is it something that goes with the territory when you move your media folder to an external hard drive?

We have a desktop PC wired into an Airport Extreme and then my macbook pro wirelessly connected. We are both running at the same speed - slower than dial up! I had Time Warner talk me through checking the connection and everything is fine on their end. They said it the problem was airport. I called Apple and was suggested to "change channels" to an odd number instead of using "automatic" through manual set up. Tried that - just as slow. I also upgraded to 7.4.2.

Is there a way to make the # key make the correct tone?

Only the number keys on my keyboard are malfunctioning besides the number 0. For example when I press 1 it appears as q1. When I press 2 it appears as w2. Â
I am not sure if I accidentally pressed something on my keyboard that has changed the functioning of my number keys. I've tried fidgeting with the keyboard settings in System Preferences and holding down the f6 key but nothing has worked.Â

We have access to two wi-fi networks. One of them is slightly more powerful (closer) so our computers always choose that network by default. But this network doesn´t support wireless exchange of files or anything. Trying to set up an iPod Touch as a remote for iTunes on one computer.I does work if I manually set wi-fi to the right network. Not very family friendly. So back to my headline.

It looks like the most recent revison to OS X, that being 10.7.4 moved, or otherwise changed the way the system displays the background image for the login screen. I use a custom image file for mine, and now that same file does not display in 10.7.4Â The file (my coustom image) is still there, but it looks like OS X does not use that file anymore. This is the file name:[URL] how to customize the login screen background in the new build?

My FCP 7 keeps on asking me about my serial number. I've thrown that box a long time ago. How can I retrieve the serial number? Also, I don't want to move on to FCP x. There doesn't seem to be a download software or software available in the market anymore for FCP 7.

I have just installed a new 128 SSD into my MacBook Pro instead of SuperDrive and kept also the old HDD inside. I made a clean install of Lion on the SSD which created a new Pictures folder on the SSD, but I want to have it linked to the old HDD. Is there any way how to change destination of these default folders?
