OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screen Sharing Isn't Great On LAN
Mar 15, 2012
my Screen Sharing within my LAN isnt verygood. Its very stuttery and screen splintersa lot and doesnt update some things. My router is a 'G' router which should be able to cope with these things.also, the screen res on my Mini is slightly different to my MBP, which i use as the remote screen to control it and therefore the picture isnt as sharp. Can i make it as sharp as if i was looking at MBP stuff?

Whenever I try to use Screen Sharing to control this one particular Mac Mini, and someone else is using the mini, and I pick "Connect to Virtual Display", I get dropped to a grey linen screen. Like the login screen, but without a list of usernames or anything. There it sits. Here is what I see in the console of the mac mini when I try and use a virtual display from the other machine:Â
3/10/12 7:30:04.291 AM mds: (Error) Backup: Couldn't stat source path '/Users/glados/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.finder.savedState/window_3.data' -- importing from backup path instead

I am trying to find an updated screen capture program (not video recording, just stills) that works well in Snow Leopard and will run OK in 64bit mode too. One of my favorite old programs from Windows was called "Hypersnap" and I would like to find something that good or better for the Mac. In that program you could do things like add highlights to the image, draw arrows or place clip art on the image too. After looking at Google, I just could not find anything like that, at least current for Snow Leopard use.

I have a mac mini server running OSX Lion 10.7.4 Until powring this down over the weekend, it had worked beautifully. I coould connect, access shared files, screen share (as I am running in head less) as well as access it via Server Admin from a remote computer.Â
After restarting, I can still share files, but am unable to access the sceen share or administer remotely. The odd thing is that when I connect it to my TV I can then also access it with screen share from another MacBook Pro as well as use server admin for remote admin. As soon as I run it headless again, I cannot access it via screen share.Â
I have noticed that the screen share finction has changed from before, so am wondering if this has anything to do with it.Â
I have not chnaged any settings on it. Firewall is the same as before, filesharing and screen sharing is enabled and I am trying to access it as a registered user.Â

We have a Mac Mini connected to our HDTV, pretty much for media server duty only. No mouse or keyboard conveniently located as a rule for this rig. We use the excellent Rowmote app (mouse, keyboard and romote control) on our iPhones to control it and it works great most of the time. However, sometimes you need a real keyboard. Since we usually have laptops handy, Screen Sharing seems like an obvious workaround. However, it ALWAYS (and when I say ALWAYS, I mean going back to 2005) asks for the name and password regardless of and inspite of checking and rechecking "Remember this password in my Keychain" about a thousand times since Screen sharing was first offered on the Mac OS, right up to 10.7.3.Â
This pervasive bad behavior can also be duplicated verbatim on our kid's media Mac Mini also. This is not a big thing, but it doesn't work, and hasn't worked for a very long time (in computer years). Does anyone know how to simply click on the Mac Minis, click the "Share Screen" button and well, share screens without constantly being asked to type in a name and password every single time?

We have a vacation home with a Mac Mini installed behind a standard cable modem / router.I occasionally VNC using the Lion Screen Sharing function (Connect to Server aka Command-K,I have the ports open on my router, everything worked well up until today.I was having some redraw issues with Screen Sharing over the internet, so I thought I'd try another VNC client to see if that worked any faster / better. In Sharing/ Screen Sharing I enabled "VNC viewers may control my screen with password" (usually i just login with the user account of the machine with the built in client.
Anyway, I connected this way with COTVNC once and didn't like it, so uninstalled it and went back to use my built in Lion VNC app.Now the VNC session is crawling slow (10-20 seconds to register a click) and I've tried everything to get it back from restarting to turning screen sharing off and on, unchecking VNC viewers may control my screen with password... everything. It seems that COTVNC has crippled my VNC connection and I have no idea why. A google search came up with nothing, so I thought I'd come here. The weird thing is... it's not physically taxing the cpu or anything, becuase if I connect via teamviewer that is also installed that is snappy. It's only when I use VNC.Sure I could continue to use teamviewer, but I liked the response time using the native client. Is there a way to reset the VNC service or something to clear the cobwebs of COTVNC away?

I have installed the latest update that Apple posted a few days ago on multipl computers. It seems that after the update, screen sharing still works, but instead of bringing up the shared screen in about 5 seconds as it used to, it now takes almost 30 seconds. This has happened for me on two seperate networks so I believe it is not network related. Something in the Lion update seems to be culpret. My 10.6 server machines still can be shared fine.

Macbook pro 2.16 C2D
iMac 2Ghz C2D
Both running 10.7.3
I am trying to connect from my macbook pro to iMac by using remote management with allow access for All Users but cannot get to connect from MBP to iMac. I can connect without problems from iMac to MBP. The macbook pro just sits trying to connect.
I check the log on the iMac and see the new entry appear during connect attempt of:
3/31/12 7:14:55.979 AM ScreensharingAgent: [CL_INVALID_DEVICE] : OpenCL Error : Failed to create context! Invalid device
Firewall turned off on both machines. I have created a new user on the Macbook to see if that could be the solution but still same occurrence.

Does anyone know of a way to enter full screen in Mac OS X's native screen sharing application? I recently purchased a new MBP and wanted to screen share to my old MB with all my "junk" on it. It would be handy to actually enter full screen as opposed to being restricted to a window sized screen.
If this isn't possible, anyone have a good recommendation for an alternative application?

I'm the designated "IT Staff" for my family. I've created an account on the various family Macs that I support so I can use Back to My Mac and screen sharing. However, when I select a computer it tries to connect using my Apple ID by default. Is there a way to force it to use a registered account instead? When it connects via my Apple ID I can't log in to the virtual display (it locks up on the login screen)...

I need to make a slideshow with a ton of impact, I have about 80 images and and what we have now is very basic, check it out .its way too slow for the amount of pictures takes an eternity to get through. We found this slideshow on the net.its very effective and you can see our pictures in a minimal amount of time. Only problem is i have no idea how to replicate this effect, I was thinking maybe premier pro but have had a look and cant get anywhere close to it.

[URL] I just found out about these. Looks interesting, and fairly cheap too. The specs are fairly low, but they are absolutely quiet, smaller than the Mac Mini, and still does what it was made to do... basic web browsing, HD video streaming, maybe a music server, etc. basic stuff. And it is fairly cheap, too. Just thought you guys might want to know about something cool I found on the intronet.

I wanted to see if there were any alternatives to the $100 superdrive that seems pretty fragile and some people suggested this Fastmac [URL] for $110, which can ready Bluray discs.
I did a little diging on this forum and found this tread [URL], which basically says it's a Panasonic (Matshita) UJ-120 drive in an external enclosure and an IDE-to-USB bridge.
Then I went on eBay to see if they sell the UJ-120 and found this seller ([URL]) selling it for $80.
I took the plunge and bought it, and it works fine. When I plugged it in, nothing happen, but when I inserted a DVD it played it and when I inserted a blank disk, it let me burn it with itunes.
Anyway I just wanted to let everyone know that this is a great alternative for $80. I haven't tried the bluray yet, but I got what I wanted.

I want to set the screen sharing on a iMac. It works fine when I enable the "Anyone may request permission to control screen" but I would like to use only the "password" option but it doesn't work. When I just set a VNC password and then try to connect via the "Screen Sharing" app, it keeps saying that the password is not correct. Which "login" am I supposed to use? When I use another client such as UltraVNC, it works. So how can I enter a password onl with the Screen Sharing app?

Just got a new MBP and migrated my account from my MB using Migration Assistant. Everything works, but if I try using screen sharing/Back to My Mac from ANY of my other Macs in the house to my new MBP, I cannot log in using my short name.
Can log in and screen share using my full name, but prefer three letters over many. Everything else works fine; can even file share using short name, just not screen sharing.

I purchased a Mac Pro last Thursday after running a G4 350 MHZ machine for far too many years. But it had been such a good machine I focused on it and took my eyes off of technological progress. I thought the PCI buses in the Mac pro were just faster versions of the kind of PCI in the G4. The G4 was outfitted with a Revolution 7.1 sound card from M Audio and that fed into a Creative 6.1 speaker system (with internal amp). The sound was amazing. It was my hope that I'd be able to transfer this card to the Mac Pro and discover even higher quality sound. But before I even tried plugging it in I did some checking and found that PCI Express is an entirely different technology than PCI.
M-Audio has stopped making the Revolution even though they still have drivers for OS X 10.5 (for folks who put this OS onto machines with the original PCI slots, I suppose). So now that this dream has shattered I am wondering what are my options for being able to hear great sound from my new computer. The internal speaker is OK for the beeps and buzzes produced by an OS that wants to get your attention but it sounds horrible when you're trying to watch a surround sound DVD. I'd like to hear from any Mac Pro owners who have found a way to make their computers deliver high quality sound. I know the Mac Pro has optical in and out but have no idea how I could make use of this other than to plug into a rather high priced surround amp.

I've kept my Mac on for days in order to test out these memory leaks that Safari, iTunes, etc supposedly have.
Safari is now using 1.01 GB of memory. And that's not from having 100 windows open or anything. I usulaly have a few windows open with a few tabs each most of the time. But it's just the size to which Safari has grown. It started out much less. Under 100mb I think.
iTunes is up to 280mb from 50mb and I believe it was even higher earlier in the day somewhere in the 330mb range.
I have 4 gigs of RAm on my aluminum iMac, but now I have only 58mb of free memory left!!!
When memory runs out what will be the result? Is Safari just using a gig of memory because it can??? Will this slowdown my system? Or will Safari and/or iTunes give up memory starting with the oldest data first? Am I reinventing the wheel here? What will this test or observation prove?
Updates to follow.

I'd like to restore my OEM Snow Leopard Installer disk (Disk 1). It won't read anymore. I've tried things like toothpaste which usually works and a metal polisher but those didn't work for this dual layer. Â
What's a good brand of scratch remover? How do I restore it? It's good if I get to restore it so that when it's resold later (for an upgrade), everything's original and complete. I'll do my best to find it in the stores here.Â
