OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Only One Program In Which Unicode Characters Do Not Show?
Mar 12, 2012I use my computers to work with my family tree. I have been looking for a new program that meets my needsd for a family tree program. Among the features is the ability to type in Ukrainian (cyrillic/unicode/utf script). I type in Ukrainian for other programs (I am not fluent, just need some ability). I have the language and keyboards installed and they work great will all the other programs.Â
The program I want to use is Gramps (genealogy software) which I tried a couple years ago (and it had a shortcoming at that time) and the old version was on my computer. I have deleted it, including in Application Support. When I imported my GEDCOM file, I was ecstatic that all the cyrillic characters were there. However, when I went to type in Ukrainian, the letters were "greeked". A suggestion from the Gramps group was to ensure that my "locale" was set to "utf-8" which I did. This did nothing, even after rebooting and reinstallling. The database was fine, but still unable to type in Ukrainian.Â

IMac ::success Writing DL DVDs / Reduce Speed To 2x Writing?
Jun 5, 2010I've made two coasters today on my iMac 27" core i7.
I am using Verbatim DVD +R DL blanks and utilized Disk Utility to make one coaster (copy to a .CDR and then burned) and then used Toast 10 to write IFO files.
The DVD will "run" but looks and sounds like a satellite tv signal in bad weather - choppy all over the place. This happens on 4 players - two separate laptops, an xbox 360, and even the original iMac 27" I used to write the DVDs.
I have had no problems whatsoever writing single layer DVDs (even using old Comp USA blanks!) and playing them on aforementioned players.
Anybody have any success writing DL DVDs? If so, what brand of disc did you use? Did you reduce speed to 2x writing? Help - I don't want to create any more coasters!

Feb 1, 2012I am trying to use OpenOffice and LibreOffice for word processing, but after I write with diacritics/romanian characters and save the text, when I open the document again the diacritics dissapear. In LibreOffice the diacritics become empty space and in OpenOffice I get ? instead of them.Â

Mar 12, 2012I'm having a problem with special characters. I've downloaded some text files containing special characters from my country (Portugal), but these characters doesn't appear. I thought the problem were the files, but I opened the same files on Windows and the characters were there.I already went to system preferences, changed the keyboard inputs, changed the language, etc, but it didn't work.Â

May 4, 2012When replacing pre-populated (untitled folder) or selected text in Finder, Safari, etc. a special character is added about 1/3 of the time. You can't see it in Finder, but it does show in file names viewed in Terminal, in URLs (only after you hit enter and Safari gets confused) in the file name at the top of certain apps, or on PCs.

Apr 10, 2012I am trying to hunt down a mystery for a friend using her macbook air (Lion). Â
She is trying to add special characters (accents, etc.) to words in a MIcrosoft Word 2008 document. Â
Sometimes she can hold the key, and the special characters menu will pop up. Sometimes she will get the "old" repeating letter (eeeeeeeeeeeee). I tried to look at everything I could think of, but there seems to be no earthly reason why it does it sometimes but not all the time.Â
The only explanation I could guess at was that it was Word 2008 and Lion (and not Word 2011).Â

May 16, 2012I recently noted that accented characters are lost in long name description of email alias address when using Mail.app but ok when using webmail in iCloud.com Setup in the prefs of the master mail account in iCloud, the long name description for the corresponding alias.is transcripted as "Frdric" in Mail.app when selecting the sender address in the dropdown list box.However, all is fine when using webmail within iCloud.com The problem appears only with OSX not with iOS.
I have been using my alias with accented char in its long name description for the last 4 years with Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion until recently. I can replicate on 3 differents Macs. Even tried to create a new user account.

Jun 4, 2012I have an issue that, while it has a work-around, it would be nice to have a definitive answer to. I have always been able to enter accented characters on my OS X devices. For instance, on my iMac, when I press the the alt key and the e key together, I get the forward accent used to give this character: é. This is something I have always been able to do, until I got my MacBook Air.Â
Both the iMac and the MacBook Air are running the same version of OS X (10.7.4). The difference is, I think, that the MacBook Air came with OS X Lion already installed whilst my iMac had Snow Leopard and was then upgraded to Lion via the App Store. Did Apple stop allowing the use of the alt key to produce special characters and I am just missing seeing that support document somewhere? Or is there a switch somewhere that I can go flick that will allow me to do the same on the MacBook Air?

Sep 11, 2014I'm on a 13" MacBook Pro, running OS X 10.9.4. I have activated [Pinyin - Simplified] in my input sources, and I have activated the option for TrackPad handwriting. Typing the pinyin and choosing the right character works fine, but I haven't been able to input chinese characters into any document via the trackpad writing method. I am able to pull up the "slate" thing, write, and choose a character, but the character just doesn't show up in the application. I've tried it with TextEdit, Word, and Safari.

MacBook :: Hard Drive Clicking Death Or Writing Process Causing Sound
Nov 7, 2009I have a late 2007 MacBook running OS X 10.5.8 that I upgraded with a Hitachi 200GB 7200RPM drive not long after I purchased it. It's been working great until about a week ago when I noticed a very quiet and frequent clicking/whirring sound coming from the drive as I was using it. My first reaction was that it might be the "click of death," but I wasn't getting any errors or having issues booting the machine, and the clicking was very periodic and not sudden like a drive crash. I verified the disk using Disk Utility and it checks out. I then opened up Activity Monitor and started watching the Disk Activity and sure enough I see a big red spike in I/O Data Written every time I hear the clicking sound, which is about every 20 seconds or so. Is my drive actually dying a slow, clicking death, or is there a rogue process writing to the disk and causing the sound? Is there a way to find out what it is?
