Just downloaded 10.7.3. The installer takes me to a box to select the hard drive where I want the new OS to go, but it is greyed out. Cannot select it.
View 8 RepliesI got all the way to where it says, please select which HD you want to install vista on, and i picked the one that said Bootcamp, which I earlier partitioned, but it said it wasn't NTFS. How do I make it NTFS? I thought it would automatically do it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I bought the Leopard install disc and loaded it up. When I tried to install 10.5.6, the installer told me that I couldn't install that version on my hard drive. I assumed it was because I only had 1 gb free, so I quit the installer and restarted so that I could free up some space. That's when the problem began. The gray startup screen came on, but then the little circle icon just spun and spun for a few minutes, then the mac shut down. I looked up some solutions on another machine. I tried selecting a startup disc, zapping the pram, etc. No good.
I started in verbose mode and it said something about an invalid sibling pair, and the last command I saw was something like 'CPU end'. I ran the disc utility from the OS X system disc, and it was unable to verify the drive. So what the heck did the OS X installer do to my hard drive? Did it corrupt the catalog? I quit the installer, so it shouldn't have touched it. (The worst part is that my super duper smart update wasn't working properly, so I need to get the data off that hard drive or I lose 2 years of work).
I am buying a used Powermac, G5 Dual 2GHz. It already has a SATA 320GB HD in it but I want to use my SATA 160GB from my dead iMac. The only questions I have are:
1. Is there anything special I need to do installing the second SATA drive? Does the drive need to be set to Slave or Cable Select?
2. Because the 160GB (going to use for storing musc) drive has OS X Tger installed, will it be a problem when booting once I install both drives? The 320GB drive has Leopard (This will be my primary drive). Will it boot to Leopard and let me use disk utility for format the 160GB drive?
l I now have to completely wipe, re-format and re-load OSX onto my iMac's internal HD, My iMac is a late 2009 27" and at present has OSX 10.8.5 loaded, ( loaded but with many miss-functions ). Prior to the problem the iMac was running OSX Lion, what version though I can't remember.I installed 10.8.5 the other day to see if that would fix things, but it hasn't. It was not a "clean install", just regular one from downloaded OSX 10.8.5.
I have run Disk Utility and TechTool Pro' 7 to try to make repairs to address the problems so far to no avail. Main problems are that my most used applications, FCP-7 Studio, Aperture and Photoshop CS5 amongst others, open but then immediately crash. I've reloaded the troubled applications, de-installed them properly with de-installation app's then clean re-installed them, but that's made no difference. They will not mount.
I reckon there must be a fault or corruption on the HD, probably caused during the Optimisation as everything was functioning well before I did that. So, the only OSX install disks I have are the original disks that came with the iMac, OSX 10.6.2 and a Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD OSX 10.6. I do have the downloaded copy of OSX Mountain Lion that I pulled from the App Store the other day and that copy is now on an external USB / Firewire 800 HD.Â
As I said I would like to be able to clean off the iMac's internal 2tb drive completely and install a fresh newer OSX. If I first have to load OSX.6.2 then upgrade via the App Store that's fine, but I'd rather just go straight to Mountain Lion if possible. Whatever works best. Getting rid of any corruption on the iMac's HD is the prime motivation.Â
All my applications and files are backed up to a 2tb LaCie external drive.The iMac has approximately 900 gb's of content onboard and the rest is free / unused space.
I purchased an iMac last October and my line of work demands extensive use of After Effects and Final Cut Pro. My iMac is fitted with the standard 1TB SATA hard drive, and lately I considered installing an SSD drive as I have been experiencing lags. In all my naivete I asked Apple Store/Service outlet where I originally bought my iMac, but they turned me down, claiming that "they are not allowed to order the extra parts and if they do proceed then my warranty will be void". Which means that about 2 years of AppleCare will go out of the window. I can always do it myself, but at the risk of damaging my iMac and facing a null warranty on top of it. I am still reeling in disbelief, is it really the case that Apple prohibits its customers from legitimately upgrading their computer at their own stores?

This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive,also system preferences sees it as a start up source.My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.

View 7 Replies View RelatedLast week I finally upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7, but now my Mac Pro (2008) won't boot properly. It'll start to boot with the gray screen and the Apple logo, but then the entire screen goes gray and it just locks up there.  However, if I reboot and hold down the Option key to bring up the list of bootable drives that works fine. I've checked my Startup Drive settings and the proper drive is selected. why it won't boot on it's own anymore? Holding down the Option key is getting old.Â

I have a Imac 20 with a small 3.5 hard drive and I have bought a bigger 360 gig 3.5 hard drive to replace the old one. I have the new one in an external case with USB 2.0 right now. Is there some way I can transfer the entire contents of the old hard drive on to the new one and then swap out the old drive with the new drive and not miss a beat?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI plan to purchase one of the new iMac's and I assume that the hard drive is not user replaceable so I know there are warranty risks but a couple months ago I was able to upgrade the hard drive in my current generation MBP to a 250GB drive. When I get an iMac I plan to get the more expensive 20 inch version and want at least 500GB since it'll be dual boot (BootCamp) Windows XP/Mac. Even the 750GB is tempting. I may go the route of the smallest hard drive and then buy a larger hard drive and upgrade myself to save money but is this hard to do?

Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLately I've been using my external hard drive as the main drive of my imac I5 and every day it freezes when I open 3 or 4 apps or more or while doing several stuff at the same time. This, obviously, doesnt happen when using the internal hard drive of the imac, so I suppose is due to using firewire 800 or usb 2.0. Is it normal for every external hard drive to freeze when using it as the main drive or maybe is it that my external hard drive is bad?
I'm planning on buying a more quieter external hard drive to use as the main drive of my imac, but I wont do so if it also keeps freezing every day. Any suggestions? Is it normal even when using firewire 800? When using the external hard drive I umount the internal drive of the imac. Maybe this is the reason? Its a Lacie Big Disk 500GB. Would an external SSD make a difference or would it still freeze?
I'm curious what people use for external storage on their iMacs. I have a Mac Pro which is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm debating whether to get a new Mac Pro or to get an iMac, which would be a pretty good speed bump from my Mac Pro 1,1. I'd get the ssd drive, and the 2TB harddrive and get aftermarket RAM. But what I like about the Mac Pro is the upgrades you can do. And I like the four hard drive bays, for storage and backup. I've got over 3 TB of photos and music/tv/movies, so I'm going to need an external drive. In addition, I'd like to be able to backup everything. Is there an elegant way to do this on an iMac with an external drive that isn't super loud and hot?

Using the generally accepted method for converting a USB flash drive to act as an installation disc my 2010 iMac 27 will not recognize this drive using the boot drive 'option' key method. After formatting the drive as an MBR disk to act as in installer the iMac will not recognize it as a bootable drive. This works fine on other Intel based computers and my GUID USB Flash Drive OSX install image works just fine and is recognizable as a bootable drive.

The only possible issue is that my system drive is an SSD, but it would be impressive if Apple managed to make their OS incompatible with a drive with a perfectly standard interface. Anybody else managed to get Snow Leopard installed on an SSD, whether one that came with their system or one they installed themselves?

The warning directs me here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649 It seems like it'll let me continue, but once it restarted it eventually said the installation failed. The point is I do have a Recovery HD and I don't know what to do about this. My intel 2006 iMac recently died, and I'm wondering if I could one of the 1GB RAM sticks into the a G3 iMac I own. And more importantly: If I could put the hard drive from the intel iMac into the iMac G3.
The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.
I would like to use FileVault to encrypt both my hard drive and time machine back up external drive. Does encryption noticeable slow down the computer.

When I tried to run the installer it froze whilst checking if it was able to install on this computer. In the end I had to force quit the installer. This was the first piece of new software I had tried to install since upgrading to 10.7.3. In. The end I gave up. Today I tried to install another application. Exactly the same happened and I had to force quit again. It appears that i am now unable to install any new apps?

I understand the lion installer evaporates after use. I have three macs and would rather not endure the 2+ hours to download lion for each. As soon as the App Store finished downloading it, it went straight into the install sequence. I've stopped at the software license page for fear that it might proceed after that and I won't be able to stop it prior to the installer disappearing.
