OS X Mountain Lion :: Reformatting IMac Corrupted Hard Drive

Sep 6, 2014

l I now have to completely wipe, re-format and re-load OSX onto my iMac's internal HD, My iMac is a late 2009 27" and at present has OSX 10.8.5 loaded, ( loaded but with many miss-functions ). Prior to the problem the iMac was running OSX Lion, what version though I can't remember.I installed 10.8.5 the other day to see if that would fix things, but it hasn't. It was not a "clean install", just regular one from downloaded OSX 10.8.5.

I have run Disk Utility and TechTool Pro' 7 to try to make repairs to address the problems so far to no avail. Main problems are that my most used applications, FCP-7 Studio, Aperture and Photoshop CS5 amongst others, open but then immediately crash. I've reloaded the troubled applications, de-installed them properly with de-installation app's then clean re-installed them, but that's made no difference. They will not mount.

I reckon there must be a fault or corruption on the HD, probably caused during the Optimisation as everything was functioning well before I did that.  So, the only OSX install disks I have are the original disks that came with the iMac, OSX 10.6.2 and a Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD OSX 10.6. I do have the downloaded copy of OSX Mountain Lion that I pulled from the App Store the other day and that copy is now on an external USB / Firewire 800 HD.

As I said I would like to be able to clean off the iMac's internal 2tb drive completely and install a fresh newer OSX. If I first have to load OSX.6.2 then upgrade via the App Store that's fine, but I'd rather just go straight to Mountain Lion if possible. Whatever works best. Getting rid of any corruption on the iMac's HD is the prime motivation.

All my applications and files are backed up to a 2tb LaCie external drive. The iMac has approximately 900 gb's of content onboard and the rest is free / unused space.

OS X :: Reformatting External Hard Drive?

Feb 22, 2009

I recently bought a 640 GB Comstar external hard drive for my macbook, and it came out of the box formatted in NTFS. I know that if the drive was in this format, I could not use it with my mac. So I opened up disk utility and tried to reformat it into Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but disk utility showed an error and the drive wasn't reformatted. So I tried FAT32 instead, and it worked. The drive has been working fine now, however, I have realized a limitation of FAT32: the files can only be smaller than 4 GB. This is a problem for me, so I need some advice. So here is my dilemma: I need to be able to share the contents of the drive over a local network that has both windows and mac computers. (Users on the network only need to be able to read the drive, not necessarily write). However, I can't use FAT32 because of the file size limitation. I'm not sure how to format the drive so that I (using my mac) can read and write it, and users on the local network can read it. I'm thinking HFS+ (mac os extended, journaled), but will windows users be able to read it then?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Unable To Eject External Hard Drive?

Sep 8, 2014

I am having problems ejecting the external hard drive that I use to back up my laptop.  It is a 2012 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5.  My external hard drive is a WD 2 TB My Book Studio.  I use it to back up my laptop with Time Machine.  Every time I try to eject my disk now I am told that "The disk (Diskname) wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it."  I have tried some solutions like to stop Spotlight from indexing the disk and to try and turn off TimeMachine, but neither of these worked.  The only thing that has worked so far is to log out of my user name and log back in with a guest user and eject it from there.  This takes up a lot of time and is ultimately not really a sustainable way of working on my computer.

MacBook Pro :: OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5) USB External Hard Drive Not Showing Up

Aug 20, 2014

I have a Hitachi Touro USB 3.0 1TB external hard drive that has always worked on my Macbook. Formatted in FAT so it would work on both my PC and Mac. I can't remember exactly when it stopped working, but I think I had to reset my mac once as it stopped responding and the HDD was plugged in. After that it stopped showing up in Finder, but still appears in Disk Utility. It also shows up in Storage under "About This Mac".  I've tried resetting my computer, ran Apple Hardware Test, and have tested the hard drive on other computers and it works fine. Just doesn't show up in Finder on my mac!!

OS X Mountain Lion :: Cannot Unmount Or Erase Partitioned External Hard Drive

Jun 21, 2014

I replaced a 1 TB external drive partiotioned in 2 with a 3 TB extrnal drive run/store my corbon copy cloner back up and time machine.

The 3 TB drive was successfully partitioned through the disk utility and both back ups are installed and the initial back up is complete.

My question is about the 1 TB drive.  I want to completely erase all data from the drive in order to use it for a different use.

Using disk utility one of the partitions deleted without incident when following the same protocol the second partition produced error messages.

Volume erase failed

Volume Erase failed with the error:

Couldn’t unmount disk.

If I try to eject the disk

It says it will not eject becaus e a program may be using it...

The only program that utilized this partition is Carbon Copy Cloner which is not being utilized on the new 3TB drive.

I do not see where there is a option to have more than on disk chosen for this purpose so am unsure why the disk utility is seeing the old partion as still in use.

I use another external harddrive for time machine back-ups (backing up both the IMac and external harddrive with my iPhoto libraries). Recently the EHD with my photo libraries crashed. I now want to restore it from time machine onto a new external harddrive, but am not quite sure how to do this.

I am backing up my data from my mac book pro for a second time. I plug in my external, and it says it doesn't have enough memory to back up my computer. I have 1 TB hard drive and used about 650 MB for the first back-up. Obviously I don't have enough to back up everything for a second time. I just want to back up the new stuff. When I go to exclude the current external from the new back up, it's grayed out. Do I have to delete the contents of the hard drive and re-back up the entire computer?

Intel Mac :: How To Backup A Corrupted Hard Drive

Jul 3, 2012

My computer crashed when I was playing a DVD.  It is a 500g hard drive and is 250G full, mostly music, some movies, and photos. I have lots of email as well.  I have an old time machine backup but there were 3 months of unsaved data such as new movie downloads, ipad sync'ing, photos, and music I need to retrieve. I stopped running time machine because the external drive filled up and I was going to buy a new one.

I was able to reinstall the OS again over the old one and login however the old login was saved as a backup and a new user name was created.  The permissions were all messed up and I could not reassign the old user name with the old programs and settings.  The computer then crashed again before I could back anything up.  Now if you try to reinstall the OS again the CD's crash and it wont finish.  If you try to boot with the CD you can go to the Utility section and see that the drive says it's failing.  I'm not sure how to back all the files.

Is there a way to remove the corrupt drive and later mount it as an external drive to the new one?  I'm worried that I won't be able to back the files up if I connect a new external drive.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Corrupted My Hard Drive -> No Backup

Nov 10, 2009

Yesterday, I stuck the upgrade DVD in and started the upgrade. Half way through the process it rebooted. At this point a big warning sign came up saying there has been errors, please reboot (I haven't seen this again). The current situation is that the macbook (Black 250gb) boots for around 20 seconds (grey screen with apple and ajax style loader gif thing) before powering down. Attempted remedies and outcomes. I have reinserted snow leopard and leopard to check the disc utility. It tells me quite quickly that the disk needs repairing. On clicking repair, it tells me that it requires me to backup erase/install. I have attached the mac to a macbook pro (the one I'm writing on) using target mode. The host (this one) cannot see the disk in finder mode but can in disk utility. The hard drive of the target is grayed out and i cannot right click for further options (such as reveal).

I have tried starting in single user mode but I get the following message: Singleuser boot fsck not done. I have tried starting in verbose mode but i get an I/O disk error and then it turns itself off. I have tried to force mount the target in terminal but it says resource busy. I only have myself to blame as it is inexcusable not to backup prior to an upgrade. I'm just so used to mac products working perfectly. To make matters worse, the last backup was on a hard drive which i have just found out is also corrupt (and my itouch stopped working today too!). So basically I have no backup. To portray the gravity of the situation, the info on the computer is a 1.5 year project. that's basically over a 5th of my life that I may have to repeat! The problem (from reading) is that the file structure is messed up. I'm sure that my files are there, it's just I can't access them.

My question is simple. How can I find and copy files from the broken macbook to this new and working macbook pro.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Drive Reformatting / Lost Data?

Apr 1, 2012

I am running an early 08 MBP w/os10.7.3.I really screwed up this morning with a backup disk. my backup system consists of several external, stand alone drives and a HD dock and several internal HDs that plug into that dock.I had a stand alone Iomega/200G/USB that i wiped to give my son who doesn't "get" backups yet. I simultaneously had the USB dock plugged in w/ a Samsung 1.5TB HD powered on. I had moved the Iomega data to the Samsung prior to erasing the Iomega w/ Disk Utility. I had chosen the 7pass wipe on the iomega last night following the data transfer. it had completed 2 passes this morning w/ fourteen hours still showing til completion. i decided that three was plenty and disconnected the iomega to reconnect and select the 3 pass option to expedite. USB dock w/Samsung still powered on and plugged into MBP. disk utility defaulted to the samsung when iomega was ejected. I hit the three pass option and started the wipe without seeing Disk Utility default to the samsung. I did immediately see the flashing red data transfer light on the dock come on and realized my mistake. Immediately disconnected the USB HD dock. Disk Utility was showing "preparing disk" in its status bar. It appears that the formatting has been wiped as reconnecting the dock gives me a "the disk is not readable by this computer". I'm sure the data is still there, but the disk needs to be reformatted. The disk appears in the disk utility sidebar. all disk repair options are greyed out.

I am considering using partition in Disk Utility as that would reformat the samsung disk. However, the data on the disk would normally appear as a blue segment on the rectangular disk setup diagram. there is no blue. According to partition docs, you can partition a disk w/out the data being wiped. However, if the disk is unreadable when the partition process starts, will it wipe all the data as it partitions and reformats? Very reluctant to initiate this process w/out knowing more.

IMac :: OSX Boot Drive Corrupted - Trash Refuses To Empty?

Nov 9, 2010

1. I do occasional maintenance with onyx and have been getting a few startup disk errors in recent months. These seem to get repaired and the computer still functions as normal. I have never had these before in 8 years of using osx so they do worry me. Is the osx boot drive just a bit corrupted? Would a simple reinstall help or is the hd showing signs of failure?

2. The trash simply refuses to empty. The operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items.

I've tried to bring the items back to the desktop and the folder they came from but they simply make a copy of them. I've tried the option key method and sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash + sudo rm -rf /Users/user_name/.Trash in the terminal but get no change

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Install A SSD Hard Drive On A 2011 IMac Without Voiding The Warranty?

Mar 14, 2012

I purchased an iMac last October and my line of work demands extensive use of After Effects and Final Cut Pro. My iMac is fitted with the standard 1TB SATA hard drive, and lately I considered installing an SSD drive as I have been experiencing lags. In all my naivete I asked Apple Store/Service outlet where I originally bought my iMac, but they turned me down, claiming that "they are not allowed to order the extra parts and if they do proceed then my warranty will be void". Which means that about 2 years of AppleCare will go out of the window. I can always do it myself, but at the risk of damaging my iMac and facing a null warranty on top of it. I am still reeling in disbelief, is it really the case that Apple prohibits its customers from legitimately upgrading their computer at their own stores?
