OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Copy IPhoto Library To External Hard Drive

Jun 6, 2012

Recently, despite careful file management my internal hard drive has reached its capacity so I purchased a 2TB WD My Book to move many of my files to to make room. After reformatting it (Mac OS Extended Journaling) starting copying stuff over but I struck a problem when I tried copying my iphoto library file over. Its about 47gig and every time i try it begins to copy but then it suddenly stops around 600mb saying it cant read or write something in the file. Is the file too big? Do I need to format the drive it differently? Hopefully not as I've already moved a heap of files over.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Possible To Copy A User's Home Folder On Machine

Mar 20, 2012

I want to sync my MacBook Pro w/ my iMac (both running Lion).I want to be able to come home from a business trip and have all of the new / edited info on my MacBook (new photos (organized & edited), changes to various folders in "documents", random files/folders added to desktop, changes made in iTunes, etc) show up on my iMac, which I work off of while at home. And of course the reverse - sync the changes on my iMac to my MacBook before I travel again.Wouldn't it be possible to copy a User's Home Folder on Machine 1 to an external drive, and then use that to replace / update the Home Folder on Machine 2? Or possibly do a complete Disc Clone (i.e. Super Duper) of Machine 1, and then use that to "restore" Machine 2? What are the pros and cons? And any better solutions? I realize that my proposals may be over simplified, but also that my goal must be a common one.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Copy Files From Jump Drive Or Download Folder

Feb 22, 2012

I haven't been able to copy files from my downloads folder to Font Book, or more importantly, copy files from my jump drive to a folder on my desktop.I also can't copy images from a CD to my desktop. All instances give the error message window "The operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items." I should have permission to copy everything, but I'm wondering if in the case of the fonts, the new Lion OS prevents you from using fonts without a license (even if they're free??) pretty clueless

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Copy A User's Home Folder To A Flash Drive

Apr 5, 2012

I am trying to write /Users/xxx to a Lexar 8g flash drive.  Its size is under 1g. I can easily put subfolders onto the drive, but if I try to feed it the entire home folder it tosses it out again.  I don't know how to use Finder to reach the /Users folder, where xxx is just a subfolder, but I can do this from the terminal command line; however, then I got stuck on how to proceed: I tried to mount /dev/disk1 [which diskutil shows as its name]; each variation I'v tried runs into some problem: disk busy, not found, etc. I was using sudo commands, so I don't think it's a permissions problem.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Restoring Backed Up ICal Folder To Desktop - Copy Permission Error

Mar 24, 2012

I'm attempting to recover from the popular iCloud mistake "Deleting the wrong calendar". I am able to locate the Folder located in the Library of my Time Machine backup, and when I attempt to "Restore to" "Desktop" I receive the following error:

This particular file name is actually located in one of the folders, in the Calendar Folders, and is just one of the many events I would like to restore to my calendar, and the copy operation aborts when I click OK. Each time I retry this a different .ics file is the issue.

Investigating file permissions reveals nothing pertinent that I can see, because I am not attempting to cross any boundaries e.g. I'm in the user account and searching in the same user account, I wish to import Calendar Folder to.

Software :: Copy Folder Deletes Original Folder Contents THEN Copies New Ones

Oct 29, 2008

I've come across a strange behaviour of Finder when copying a folder over another with the same name. I'm using 10.4.11.

Say I have a folder named "Test" and it contains "File1" and "File2" and I copy it over another folder named "Test", which contains "File3" and "File4".
After copying I would expect folder "Test" to contain all four files, but it doesn't! It will only contain the two that I copied over, the original two will be deleted.

Is there any way to have finder replace files of the same name when copying and retain all other files in the destination folder?

/Test/File3, File4After:
/Test/File1, File2Desired:
/Test/File1, File2, File3, File4

OS X Mavericks :: How To Copy Folder From Hidden Library Folder That Is Not On Startup Drive

Jun 5, 2014

I have a hard drive on my 2008 MacPro that's problematic and so I bought a new drive and installed Mavericks on it and am booting just fine on the new drive. There is however, one folder in the Library/Preferences folder that I need to copy over to the new drive.  All the tricks for accessing the Library folder work great on the start up drive, but I can't seem to access the Library folder on the old drive (both drives in the MacPro as it has 4 drive bays), even though the drive will mount.  How can I see that Library folder on the old drive?  Note  while I can mount the old drive, I can't boot to it.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Copy The Folder Structure Without The Folder Contents

Apr 28, 2012

I would like to create an archive of important application installers and I will sync the contents between two systems MacPro and Macbook Pro.

I need to pull the names of the application/developers from somewhere so I figured I would use the Application Support directory.

So I need a way to copy this directories folder structure without any of the file contents.  Is there an easy way to do this.  I found a post with an Automator script but the link is dead [URL]

I also found this post that refers to doing it in terminal but since it is the app support directory I am wary to do this as I am not familiar with terminal at all and I am not clear on what exactly to write in the old_dir / new_dir section.  I figure it would be something like this /Library/Application Support but I dont want to make a mistake.

Here is the Terminal command:

cd old_dir
find . -type d -depth -print | cpio -pd new_dir

OS X :: Favorites Folder - Copy Of Whole Folder Instead Working As Shortcut

Sep 7, 2010

Because of problems accessing our network using Snow Leopard, I've started using the 'Favorites' folder as a 'shortcut' to our networked drives. It works fine and is very useful. A colleague has asked me to set the same facility up on his computer. When I dragged 'Favorites' from his 'Libary' folder to the sidebar, it appeared there with a heart icon. 'Sweet!' we thought. However, we then found that when we dragged one of the folders which he wanted to have in his favorites over to the sidebar, the O.S. proceeded to make a copy of the whole folder contents - instead of it working as a shortcut. What are we doing wrong?

Applications :: IPhoto Creates Faces Thumbnails Files And Places In IPhoto Library / Data Folder

Jan 27, 2009

Thought I'd start this thread for people to discover/add any info they have on what iPhoto Faces is doing behind the scenes to help with troubleshooting, since Apple doesn't have any preferences for Faces in the iPhoto GUI. This is only for people who like to understand what is happening behind the scenes. Please note this is not for everyone and anytime you do anything to your iPhoto library you risk corruption and should have a backup copy. What I've noticed so far:

- iPhoto scans the library the first time it opens, and creates 2 faces .db files with the iPhoto Library:

face_blob.db
face.db

- iPhoto creates Faces thumbnails files and places them in the iPhoto Library/Data folder along with the other thumbnails it creates................

Applications :: Copy Items To IPhoto And ITunes?

Nov 3, 2010

In preferences for iTunes and iPhoto you have the option to copy items to the applications or not when importing. Obviously if you copy them when importing then you will take up more hard drive space since you will now have the items in two locations.

Is there an advantage to copying items instead of not? I did have it set up to copy items (defaults that way) but would prefer to save hard drive space.

Whats are your preferences and why?

Applications :: Copy Items To The IPhoto Library - Or Not

Dec 25, 2010

What is the advantage of having iPhoto importing and copying all pictures into the iPhoto library file ("copy items to the iPhoto Library")? Is there any reason why that would be better than managing the picture folder structure manually and just having a reference to the pictures?

I think iTunes has the same feature and offers to import/copy the music files into its library.

I plan to get my first Mac next month and wonder if I should enable this "copy items to the iPhoto Library" when moving my 50k pictures from Windows to the Mac or if that's not a good idea...

OS X :: Pictures Imported From IPhoto - No Permissions To Copy

Jun 14, 2010

I have a number of files with -rwxrwxrwx@ file permissions (note the @ at the end - this comes from an ls -l command in terminal). They are photos on an external drive. When I try to copy them to a new drive I am advised that I do not have permission to copy them (despite rwxrwxrwx).

This is confusing and also very hard to search for (@ not liked at all). Can anyone tell me what the deal is? I have a suspicion it may relate to the photos being imported iPhoto at some time but that I cannot confirm. I can copy them to a windows machine and then to the final destination but all the last modified dates get changed (not a desirable outcome).
