Mar 20, 2012I place document icons in my finder sidebar, and sometime later they change to folder icons. Does not matter which application they come from, it seems to happen to them all, but they are still linked to the correct documents.

Mar 14, 2008Is there a way to get Mac OS X to show as the icon for folders containing pictures thumbnails of some of the pics from inside? There is a similar feature in Windows and it is very easy to see which folders contain which pictures if you have alot of different folders:
Note that the icons below are folders containing pictures
Or if this is impossible, is there a plug-in that will make it do this?

Dec 18, 2009I really need your help with this one. I was changing all of my folder icons and for some strange reason the Downloads icon will not change and now wont even appear. Please see attached screenshot.I have done the following to try and fix this problem:
1. Used LiteIcon and Candybar but both weren't able to fix the problem.
2. I went to /system/Library/coresevices/coretypes.bundle/contents/resources and the correct downloads icon does appear. It just wont appear in the Finder Window.
3. I have rebooted, logged in and even did a system cache clear and still nothing.
4. Tried to change it manually with the Command I and copy and paste with changing permissions. Nothing worked.

Nov 20, 2009At some point I changed the appearance of my PDF icons from the default red and white Adobe PDF image to where the PDF icons show a little image of the front cover of the PDF. Now I would like to change all of my PDF icons back to the default red and white Adobe Reader icon. Does anyone know how to do that please? I have Googled this and see instructions for how to change from the Adobe default to custom but can't figure out how to reverse that.

Oct 11, 2010Whenever I restart my system my sidebar icons revert to a generic white icon. Not all of them do it, and its not always the same ones. They flip flop for no reason. One time my picture icon will be generic, the next time I restart my picture icon is fine but my music icon is generic.
Anyone know why this happens? It never happened on my previous machines running the same version of OSX. 10.6.4
I used candybar to replace icons and its never been a problem in the past. I've even manually replaced the icons in finder and it still happens.
The icons in question are on my second drive, not my boot drive. Does that have something to do with it? Sometimes if I just click on the generic icon the correct icon will show up, sometimes it wont.
Software :: Icons Appearing Generic On G5?
Jan 27, 2009I have a PPC MAC G5 desktop and recently broke down and installed Leopard 10.5.2 and installed all the upgrades to 10.5.6. I especially liked how all my photo jpeg icons and quicktime movies would instantly reappear with a photo of itself or the first frame of the movie. Now though, all the icons are appearing generic?!? My Quicktime movies and all my photos are all staying as a generic jpeg icon. Is there a specific problem that causes this.? I have two hard drives and the second drive is still operating normally. But my main drive has ceased converting every icon whenever I open a new window.

Mar 3, 2008I am trying to change some folder icons in Leopard.
According the Helpfile, you can just past an image once you open the icon information window and click on the folder image at the top of the info window.
I have tried this and the 'paste' function is always greyed out in the edit menu.
Also, if I drag 'n' drop an image onto the folder image it does change, but the preview does not change.
Does anyone know if there are certain permissions/preferences you have to change before you are able to change icons in leopard?
ps: sorry if this question has been asked before, I searched the forums for 10 mins and couldnt find anything similar.

Apr 18, 2005in all my finder windows, randomly mind you, as not all PS file icons went to that faceless (graphic) green shaded generic icon of Photoshop CS? It's rather annoying when looking through files. Double click in the finder (list) and they all show the proper larger thumbnail preview, but many of smaller icons are again, generic, but weirdly not all. I tried reinstall of PS and it did nothing. It seems to have made no difference if the jpegs were created in PS 7 or PS CS. Seems random Btw, I'm 85% sure this happened after updating to (OS X) 10.3.9. DiskWarrior, Applejack, Permissions all been run. I've looked under Finder prefs and file handling prefs in PS all say to show the icon.

Jan 13, 2009to be specific I want to change the iWork '09 folder icon, I downloaded a new folder online, I have it in INCS and PNG form and its 512x512, I already searched on google for how to do this and tried copying the file and pasting it on the little icon in the "get info" boxit will copy the file over but it won't be in 512x512 size, in cover flow mode of the finder if i make it anything more than like 48x48 it disappears

Jun 11, 2012After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

Jun 12, 2009 I don't really know how to describe this or even search for it. (I tried the best I know how) The only thing I can do is show a picture. I don't have any idea how this happened or how to fix it. The real Finder icon in the left of the dock does not have the light underneath indiciating that it is running, but there is a generic app icon that is actually the finder and has the normal Finder context menu when I right click it. This icon behaves just like any regular app and I can even right click and quit it. Anyone have any ideas what caused this and how to fix it short of reinstalling Mac OS X? BTW I'm using a 13" Alu MacBook running 10.5.7.

Oct 21, 2010I know there are tons tutorials out there to change a file/folder's icon, mainly the "get info" method or third party software. But the moment I moved the file with custom icon to a removable media, say an external hard disk, the icon does not follow. And I can't change an icon to the files on the ext HDD as well through the "get info" method. I used to be from windows background, so I'll just set a thumbnail cover to the folder and it stays when burned to disc. (of course, the disc when opened on mac doesn't have the thumbnail cover. I didn't know before, since I didn't have a mac to check on)
Problem here is I'm hoping the custom icon can stick permanently and be seen on any removable media (CD/DVD/HDD) and viewable on a PC. I'm hoping there's a way to do so, so that I can put a representing image cover to the folders I burned for my projects. this way my lecturers can easily get an overview of the content inside each folder. And I'm not sure if these lecturers uses a mac on windows...so it'll be great if that icon is readable on both. I found out that on a fat32 external hdd, I can change the icon to the files in there, but not to a NTFS formatted hdd. Any way to work around for NTFS?

Aug 29, 2009I can easily change the icon of my HD, or any other application using CandyBar or LiteIcon but these prgrams do not allow me to change standard folders and that's mainly what I want to change.
CandyBar & LiteIcon even allow me to change the "applications" folder, "Documents" and "Downloads", etc... but I havent had any luck with the cliche standard blue folders.

I removed it from the dock, and dragged the "documents" folder with the new icon into the dock, but it just shows a generic blue folder. Mar 24, 2008I'm planning on making myself some icons (in particular, a volume icon with the windows flag and one with the leopard X, to differentiate between them on my desktop) and with a bit of googling, found that *most* of the system icons were in System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle although one particular icon that wasn't there was the hard disk icon that is on the desktop.
Does anybody know where this icon would be? (And any other common system ones that are not in CoreTypes.bundle)
OS X :: Getting Default ICNS Image When Trying To Change Folder Icon?
Jun 7, 2009Tried a search but not be lucky so hoping someone out there has solved this one before.....
Been trying to change some of the default icons Apple provide with third party .icns files by opening the folder info window in finder by using the 'get info' command, then clicking the icon in the top left hand corner (so it is has the tiny blue halo) and then edit-paste in the new icon. Sometimes it works (have changed some successfully) but now when I try, instead of the pasted icon displaying the icon image, I get the generic or default icon image for an icns icon displayed, see the screen grab attachment for what I mean
Can anyone advise me as to whats not working correctly?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Change Desktop Background Picture?
Jul 5, 2012I have Lion I have Aperture 3.
I set the desktop background picture to photos on Aperture through right mouse clicking to "change destop background".
All the photos fhrough Aperture are present. I click the photo and it changes. I also use the screen saver using aperture photos. All of these photos are on an external drive and has been working flawlessly with Lion on my older imac.
Last week I bought a new imac with Lion. Everything is working the same as above except for when I shut down the imac. When I boot it back up, the mac supplied image of the milky way appears and the photo I had on the desktop prior to shutting down has been replaced by this.
The external is mounted and the screen saver after 5 minutes will show my Aperture photos....it is just the desktop photo that has been replaced..
