OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Restore DMG Image Stored On NTFS Disk?

Apr 10, 2012

My MacBook Pro has OSX Lion on it. I have created a DMG image of my starting volume using Disk Utility. The image was saved on an NTFS formatted external USB disk. I used Paragon NTFS for Mac to activate writing on NTFS partitions. The image was created, tested and it mounted fine. It's size is 105GB.

I have restarted the system and am accessing Disk Utility from the recovery partition that OSX Lion creates. Disk Utility can see the NTFS disk and I can choose the DMG image as source and the partition on the internal hard disk as a target without problems but when I press the restore button and the Image scan process is going to start I just get an error that says "Unabke to scan Mac-OSX HD. Resource busy". When I try the SCAN BEFORE RESTORE command on Disk Utility on the image I am getting "Unable to scan MAC IMAGE.DMG (Not such file or directory)".

I have already erased my startup disk and really need to get this image back in place. It is the only backup I have of my data.

OS X :: Cannot Restore Windows Disk Image - Not Enough Space

Jun 21, 2010

I have a macbook (Generation 2,1) with OS X 6.3 with a new 500gb hard drive. Before upgrading my hard drive, I saved the my bootable windows (NTFS) partition on an external drive (as a partition) and as a disk image, which is 16.3gb. Now I've made a blank partition 20gb in size (just to make sure) and tried to restore either from the external drive or from the disk image (the result is the same). I get the error message that there is not enough space on the destination. Then when I check back, the partition I was trying to restore to has now shrunk to 16.3gb! Is there a way I can get the restore function to work properly?

OS X :: Use Image As Desktop - Cannot Find The Image From Where I Have Stored?

Apr 14, 2009

I recently right clicked a picture to set it as my desktop picture but didn't have the foresight to save the picture in case I wanted to change it later. I still have the picture up but I cannot find where the picture is stored so I can save it for later. I checked HD/Library/desktop pictures but no luck. Does anyone know where these pictures are saved?

OS X :: Converting CDR To ISO / Bootable CDR Disk Image To An ISO Disk Image

Sep 10, 2009

Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:

1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso

Or

2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr

The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unable To Mount Disk Image

Feb 28, 2012

Yesterday I downloaded and installed Lion. After a while I tried to open one of the disk images that I have stored on the harddrive, which worked to mount prior to installing Lion. While attempting to open it, the process fails and gives the error "no mountable filesystems". I have searched for the error on the internet, and there does not seem to excist a solution to it. However, all the people with the same error, whcih did not have a solution, did not seem to have a similiar problems. Their problem lied with not being able to access disk images downloaded from the internet, while my disk image already excised on the hard drive before installing lion.

Many of the files and documents on the disk image are irreplaceable to me. I can not stress how important it is for me to recover them. If I am not able to do so, it will result in a massive economic loss.

The following error message just popped up: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Robert's Office iMac (2).sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)." I'm running a late 2009 iMac; upgraded to Lion about a week ago. It seems to have done the Time Machine backups fine for the last week. The only other recent change was to reset my iCloud account so I could sync with my iPhone.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Creating A Disk Image Of A RAID 1 Setup?

Jun 20, 2012

I have just finished setting up my first Lion Server from scratch on a Mac Mini with dual 500GB Drives which I set up as RAID 1. I have the server exactly as I want it, and before the users start logging on and it gets all screwed up I would like to create a disk image of it so that I could reinstall if necessary w/o having to start from scratch.

Is the process of creating a disk image for a RAID 1 any different than that of a disk image from a single drive set up? Will Disk utility just see this as a single volume or will it want to create a disk image of the entire RAID? i.e will the disk image be 1 TB (500 GB x 2)? And when it comes to reimaging my RAID, will I just recreate a RAID 1 and be able to write to it from that disk image?

OS X :: Deleted NTFS Partition - Any Way To Restore?

Aug 14, 2008

I was trying out to test if I might want to use OSX since I was always using Windows XP, but apparently I did some stupid things while I was on OSX. I wanted to expand my OSX partition but I couldn't do the typical dragging to adjust the size, so I pressed on the + button on disk utility and my windows partition became 2 equal partitions. But that wasn't what I wanted so what I did was to click - and not sure that that was an actual confirmation for deletion, I clicked the button to Doom! So now, I'm left with a single Mac partition with the rest of HDD in free space condition. I didn't create a new partition or read or write to the sector. The question is, thus, if there is anyway to restore or undelete that partition that was so unfortunate?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Does Screen Saver Prompt For Secure Disk Image Password

Mar 17, 2012

I go into System Preferences->Dektop & Screen Saver.  As the program "loads" availabe image sources and such I get a pop-up requesting a password to my secure disk image. Yes, I have a secure disk image in my home directory. Yes, the secure disk image is currently "locked" (Not mounted in finder).

I click cancel (a few times, probably 2 maybe 3 times) and things continue along fine. I select a photo source that I want for a screen save and exit peferences. I then go an start the screen saver (I'm using Hot-Corners). I get the message "Looking for pictures....." for , well...basically forever...

Sure enough I touch the mouse to leave my screen saver and there is the pop-up again.  Asking for me to unlock my secure disk image.

I thought this might be related to Spotlight.  I tried reading several threads and have gone as far as taking my entire hard-drive/volume and putting it into the "Privacy" tab under spotlight.

how I might get it so the "Desktop & Screen Saver" stop prompting me to unlock my secure disk image?  (WITHOUT having to make sure the disk image is unlocked before I sleep my screen or open the screen saver utlity) As always, I am only speculating that this is Spotlight related so that could be a red-herring....

OS X :: External NTFS Drive Missing Content - How To Restore

Mar 12, 2010

I just got an imac and love it so far. Have been a pc user (and still am) and have a western digital external drive with crazy info on it that I got running on my mac without having to format it to fat32.

Everything was working perfect up till last night and now I can't access any of the contents on the drive.

It seems that everything is there as the drive only shows 62GB of 500GB free but the folder is empty.

I tried to run a disk repair using disk utility on my mac but everything is grayed out. I also tried to run a disk check on my pc but windows cant seem to access the drive without wanting to format it first.

I am trying to make a redundant backup image of my harddrive using something OTHER than Time Machine.  I booted to recovery because you image from a disk you are booted from.  The restore took 2 hours, and indicated the entire time in disk utility that it was restoring "Mac HD" to a similarly sized partition on my external hard drive.  When it was done, the external had a copy of my recovery drive on it.  That's crazy talk.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Using Super Duper To Erase And Restore Hard Disk?

Apr 18, 2012

My older MBP is running very slow, and I have tried all the usual ways of making it run quicker - repair permissions, repair disk from Lion recovery partition, remove extraneous files, checking Activity Monitor, etc. etc. Someone suggested reformatting the HD and then restoring from a backup. I have the HD cloned to an external HD with Super Duper, but if I reformat the internal HD and restore from the clone, won't the problems that caused the issue in the first place just be cloned into SD and then restored to the reformatted internal drive, thus defeating the excercise?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Macbook Cannot Boot: Hard-disk Repair / Restore Error

Apr 8, 2012

My MacBook is unable to boot. Whenever I try to boot, the spinning circle and the progress bar appears on the grey screen, but when the progress bar reaches about 40%, the computer shuts itself down. I started in Verbose Mode and tried AppleJack, and it said my harddisk needs to be repaired; but AppleJack is unable to do that. (Error Messages: "Invalid node structure" and "Incorrect number of thread records) I then tried to startup with both Recovery HD and Mac OS X Install DVD and ran the Disk Utility on both of the startups. At the First Aid tab, I selected my Hard Drive (not the Hitachi one, the Macintosh HD one) and clicked on Repair Disk. The error messages I got from Repair Disk were:Invalid volume file countInvalid node structureThe volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.

Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk..disk, and restore your backed-up files. And, lastly, the following popup message appeared:Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD"Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. Not being sure how to back-up my files using Disk Utility, I plugged in an external HDD to my USB port and clicked on the Restore tab in the Disk Utility. As the Source, I selected Macintosh HD and as the Destination, I selected one of the partitions I created on my external HDD. However, when I clicked on Restore, I got the following error message:Restore FailureCould not restore - Input/output error I partitioned my external HDD by creating 2 partitions formatted in Mac OS Extended Journal - GPT. Now, what can I do to save my files (and my MacBook's HardDisk)?

Does anybody know where this icon would be? (And any other common system ones that are not in CoreTypes.bundle)

OS X :: Unable To Read NTFS Disk (Vista)?

Feb 5, 2009

I took out the hard drive from the Vista and put it in an external enclosure that is USB attached to my Mac. The Mac is unable to read the drive.

I thought that leopard was able to read NTFS file systems?

It acts as if it doesn't even understand the partition table format on the drive.

Is there a simple way to get this to work? Does NTFS-3G help reading the partition table?

OS X :: How To Get NTFS Partition Option With Disk Utility

Dec 3, 2009

I just bought a 1TB Lacie d2 Quadra and want to partition it in 2 partitions. As said in the instructions, if you want more than 32 GB on my "PC" partition I need to use Mac's disk utility. The thing is I don't have the option to partition in NTFS, only MAC OS extended (journaled, etc..) and FAT32. But I need a lot more than 32 GB for my PC stuff. Now how can I do that? I need to backup some stuff from my Windows XP (bootcamp) really soon! And I want to be able to plug it in another PC and be able to transfer both ways. How can I get the NTFS partition option with disk utility? or is there other softwares for that? In all what I want is about 500 GB for MAC and 500 GB for PC (NTFS)!
