Mac OS X Lion Server :: Creating A Disk Image Of A RAID 1 Setup?
Jun 20, 2012
I have just finished setting up my first Lion Server from scratch on a Mac Mini with dual 500GB Drives which I set up as RAID 1. I have the server exactly as I want it, and before the users start logging on and it gets all screwed up I would like to create a disk image of it so that I could reinstall if necessary w/o having to start from scratch.
Is the process of creating a disk image for a RAID 1 any different than that of a disk image from a single drive set up? Will Disk utility just see this as a single volume or will it want to create a disk image of the entire RAID? i.e will the disk image be 1 TB (500 GB x 2)? And when it comes to reimaging my RAID, will I just recreate a RAID 1 and be able to write to it from that disk image?

I have a Mac Pro that I want to create a mirrored RAID set in.
I have a 1TB Hard Drive that is the main system drive.
I just added a 2nd 1TB Hard Drive that I wanted to use along with this first hard drive to create a mirrored RAID set.
I used the following document to help with the process:
[URL]
I have opened up Disk Utility and think I may know how to do this but a few things concern me.
First, it states that it will erase the contents of the drives it's using to mirror. I had the idea it would simply duplicate the data onto the other drive. Is it true that it will delete the data on the current drive?

I have some files that I occasionally send to my family members. The thing is, because they contain sensitive information (finance records, sometimes they're family videos), I don't like just uploading it to my iDisk.
What I've been doing is going into Disk Utility, creating a password-protected disk image, then zipping up that file. It's a few layers of security, and the 128-bit encryption seems good. The thing is, I'm not sure what settings to use.
Here's a screenshot of the window that comes up when creating a new disk image. What options should I choose from here? I can do a Get Info on all of the files I'm putting in the disk image, but it would be easier to have it auto-fit whatever I put in, eliminating any unused space. I'm not sure of what to put for Format, Partitions, and Image Format, and I'm surprised that I have to choose a size since I've heard there's a way to have it automatically fit the files.
Is there a way to select my files/folders in the Finder and have a disk image created from the selection?

I am currently building a RAID setup for storage of iTunes and other files. I have 4 hard drive spots to work with. I have been throwing around a few options. safest way of doing this would be great!
Option 1:
4 x 1.5TB (2x1.5TB RAID 0 + 2x1.5TB RAID 0 Clone) What would be the worst case scenario with this? if one hard drive fails I would just use the clone or vice versa.
Option 2:
4 x 1.5TB RAID 1 with no clone. Which of these is the better option? or is there an option 3?

I have a couple of questions regarding backing up my external drive. I've got a 2TB external drive with about 1.5TB of movies, Music etc. I've got another identical empty drive that I want to keep a backup of the first drive on. So my question is what is the best way of backing up this data? I thought of using disk utility(I'm running snow leopard 10.6.4 if that makes any difference) to created a mirrored RAID set. If I plug in the empty drive then create the RAID set will my first drive get wiped when the set is created? or with it leave the data on the first drive intact? Or should I just use something like crashplan to backup to the 2nd drive?

I've been trying to migrate data to a new RAID setup, but have been running into the error code 36 issue where Mac created invisible files are killing the file transfers. At any rate, I tried about three different directory cleanup utilities and for the most part got almost all the data to move. Now I'm onto the last bit which was giving me permissions errors as well.I used Batchmod to make everything read write and I ALSO CLEARED THE XTARS. Worked like a charm and everthing transfered. HOWEVER. Killing the extened attributes of the files turned them all into Executible files with no program ownership. BTW, there are font files so there are hundreds of them. Is there anyway to re-assign them or get some of the attributes back?

Literally just got shiny new miniMac Server with the dual 70GB internakky hard drives/disks with OS X 10.7.$ LION pre-installed. What a nice machine in a super cool box Seemed to bootup and run fine! Now my issue (there will be more for this MAC newbie):How to setup AND more importantly (item B below) CONFIRM that a RAID MIRROR is working? Want nothing fancier than 2-nd drive is exact duplicate of 1-st drive at all times. That is, an 'active and full up-to -the second" backup of the main 1-st drive.I have done nothing to 1-st drive as it came from APPLE.When I try to setup RAID set using DISK Utility, I get message about system(1-st drive) can't be used in a RAID or such.
yet I can add 2-nd drive to what I tink is a RAID set and then 'Enable' it.It seems to add another entry to thr left-side of drves list panel but not sure that 1-st and 2-nd drives are BOTH in the new "RAID SET' or that the set just consists of the "single" 2-nd disk? B. I don't think that 1-st drive data is actually being duplicated to 2-nd drive. For instance, how do I know that it was 'caught up' to match 1-st drive AND then is [code]

I need more storage and need it to be quick and redundant
I'm concidering 2 of either the WD thunderbolt duo 6TB or the LaCie 2Big Thunderbolt 6TB. I want to set each 2disk unit to RAID 1 and then srtipe them as RAID0 accross thunderbolt to hopefully result in one striped and mirrored 6TB RAID volume
I'm hoping yes because i've seen 4 of the WB unit daisychained as one huge RAID0 but I'd like the redundancy. also i want the resultant volume in exFAT as I am constantly jumping between OSX and Win 7

My brother is going to start school in June for Film. He is all set to buy a Mac and knows the software side of things but not so much the Hardware side.
I have a few questions:
1. Should extra hard drives be bought third party?
2. Should he do a raid setup for backups?
3. How much memory should he buy for Final Cut operations? (third party)
4. Should he look into getting a Dell monitor instead of Apple? What is a comparable Dell monitor?
5. 4-Core or 8-Core?
6. Any other knowledgeable Mac Pro buying advice

I'd like to setup a network account on Lion Server and allow that account to VPN in to my server. But I want this account to have limited access to my LAN, similar to how the stovepiped "Guest Network" works with Airport Extremes. I don't see any way to assign specific network accounts specific IP ranges outside the normal, say, 10.0.1/24. Is there even any way to assign a specific account something in the range, say, 10.0.2/24? Any way to further limit network access for Lion Server VPN sessions?

I have a new Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with the Mac RAID card installed with four 1TB drives setup in a RAID 5 array. When creating the volumes in the RAID utility, you can not edit them, resize, etc. If one large volume is created in the RAID utility, you can then partition that one volume using the Apple Disk Utility, which then allows you to resize if needed.

I have a Mac Mini that I plan to use as a simple file server with a 2TB external disk. I would like to be able to add future external disks to grow the original 2TB volume I create to 4TB, 6TB, etc. using RAID.
I know it is possible to add disks to a concatenated RAID set without destroying the data on the disks already in the set, but I cannot get Disk Utility to let me create a single-disk concatenated RAID set.

I´ve got a magic triangle setup, it seems to be working. I got a 10.7.3 Lion Server that has a bind to my AD and also is operating as OD Master. Then I´ve got a test user in my AD and a MacBook Air connected to AD and my OD, no issues here. Works fine logging on as my testuser to my AD on my MB Air. What I would like to do is to manage some Mac OS settings through my OD, I have two local groups in OD (Mac Users and Mac Computers). I have added my AD user test account to the Mac Users group and also added my MacBook AD computer account to the group Mac Computers.
If I for example edit some settings applied to the user group, lets say that I edit some dock settings, that settings does work and applies when I log in to my AD. But the settings applied on the computer group does not work. I have tried setting some Energy Saver settings to the Mac Computers group but that setting does not go through when I log on to the computer belonging to that group. Any one seen this before, maybe pointing me in the right direction.

I am trying to setup test server with following services:
DHCP
DNS
Open Directory
Profile Manager
Software Update
But not having much of success. I have installed 10.7.3 on virtual machine (Using Fusion 4) on Mac Pro and given a 4 GB of RAM. This machine is running in its own bubble, it has no communication even with host. So I have configured DHCP and DNS services which seems to be working fine (I have confirmed with another client which can get IP and DNS server address from this server).
Now whenever I have tried to run OD setup using both tools (Server App and Admin Tool), it takes forever to configure (more than 1 hour) and then it fails with error saying "check your network settings". I have checked and machine has proper IP address (tried both DHCP and Static) and also used "lookup" utility to resolve the DNS address both ways (forward and reverse).

I'm trying to make it so that my students have the ability to log onto our iMacs (all running Lion) through our Mac Mini Server (also Lion). I recently had to go through drastic changes in order to simply create a directory administrator, yet it still persists. The active directory isn't binded onto the server yet. When I try to bind the my Active Directory with the Mac Mini, I get the following popup after logging in as the Directory Admin:

I have been trying to use my Mac Mini with Lion Server as a router for my network with no success. I have tried the wizard and it finishes and nothing works.
I have a Cable Modem connected to the Mac Mini via the USB connector and the server surfs fine. The DHCP server is now correctly working I think and the clients are getting the correct IP addresses now.

My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...
1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again. Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic...
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic...
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:
1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

Yesterday I downloaded and installed Lion. After a while I tried to open one of the disk images that I have stored on the harddrive, which worked to mount prior to installing Lion. While attempting to open it, the process fails and gives the error "no mountable filesystems". I have searched for the error on the internet, and there does not seem to excist a solution to it. However, all the people with the same error, whcih did not have a solution, did not seem to have a similiar problems. Their problem lied with not being able to access disk images downloaded from the internet, while my disk image already excised on the hard drive before installing lion.
Many of the files and documents on the disk image are irreplaceable to me. I can not stress how important it is for me to recover them. If I am not able to do so, it will result in a massive economic loss.

I have 2 1TB drives coming in on Monday, and I plan to put them in a mirror RAID using Disk Utility. How reliable is the OS X software RAID setup? Would I be better to just manually backup from one drive to another? The drives will be for my photography, I wanted a mirror setup so I'd finally have a backup of my (current) 250GB's of photos. (Most of which I could probably burn to DVD's but humor me.)
If the RAID crashed somehow via the software, would the data still be recoverable? I have a MP and will be putting them in Bays 3 & 4. Also, is there any benefit to the different block sizes? Since my files will all be at least 7MB would the biggest block size speed it up?

I just got a brand new MAC PRO desktop. It came with a 600GB HDD. I purchased a second identical internal 600GB HDD. I wanted to do setup a RAID 1 using these 2 drives. Currently the main drive has the OS and all my other apps installed. I installed the 2nd drive and was fooling with disk utility. I'm not sure how to set this up however. I tried numerous guides online but I just cant figure it out.
MAC PRO (takes up to 4 internal drives) - currently installed 2 identical drives
Leopard
Using Disk utility
The RAID tab says "online" and the status is green (indicating the RAID is working). However on my desktop i see the 2nd hardddrive mounted with no contents in it. I just want to able to use the 2nd drive as a mirror so this way if one fails I'm still up and running.
