OS X V10.7 Lion :: App Won't Start, But Executable Does
Jun 25, 2012
Some Apps, (e.g. VLC Player, but others also) won't start if I open them regularly, they're just bouncing in my Dock until I kill them.
BUT, if I open the App as a folder (Rightclick, Show Package Contents) and find the executable (Contents/MacOS) and start it, it works just fine. Launching the shouldn't do much other than location this executable and running it.

iMac 27, 2.8 Quad Core, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB HD running 10.7.3Â lead in > Lately I am having trouble with Aperture 3.2.3 who doesn't let me make some image adjustments "out of the blue". To correct this I usially have to reinstall Aperture from scratch. Trying to do so made me find out that I can't execute the Aperture trial 3.1 dmg file or any other dmg file on my iMac. When i double klick on a dmg file it will flash once and then just sit there doing nothing. The dmg "Get Info" window shows that the file is associated with the DiskImageMounter.app as supposed to. I have no glue why it won't execute these files and open the installer. I have tried everything from executing with disk image to repair permissions etc, etc. and I have read all forums and threats I could find but to no avail. Â
The only way to fix this is reinstalling OSX 10.7.3. After reinstalling Lion everything is just fine - for a while. I am able to reinstall aperture with the trial version dmg file. All other dmg files will also execute. For now I was able to work with my reinstalled system for the last seven days with no glitches, but last night same problem occured as described earlier. I have also checked my harddrive with disk utility and onyx. Both apps say HD is just fine.

I'm using a PC with Windows XP. I'm a private developer. I've written a project in Java and wish to deploy it to other people using email. I've written an Install program (the Main-Class) and successfully packed this in a jar file with the project class files and some data files all as described in the deployment trail in the Java Tutorials. A recipient with a Mac with OS X downloads the jar file and runs it to install the project class files and some data files. The install program then writes an Applescript file (Vocab.scpt shown below) on the Desktop to make starting my downloaded program easier but it doesn't seem to work and I think it may be because the script file is not "executable". Could this be the case? If so, how could I change my install program to make the script file executable or alternatively use some other system to start the downloaded program?
Vocab.scpt:-
# Script to start: Vocab Version: 1.0.0
do shell script "cd /Applications/Vocab; Java Vocab"
Unfortunately I don't have a Mac to experiment with this problem and although I have spent some days on and off trying to find an answer in the mass of information available on Apple's website I can only find small clues here and there to answer my problem (which I would have thought was quite a common one). In Windows a batch file (eg. Vocab.bat) is automatically executable.

I was just looking up the songs of the noughties, and I came across what appeared to be a blog, judging on the description google gave me. However on later inspection it appeared to be a kitchen website. Anyway on the website there was what appeared to be a video, and I was asked to do something, although it was in a windows style 'window' rather that the OS X style. I was promoted to download something from [URL] and I clicked ok, as this window would not go away otherwise, however I cannot find it on my mac, and it says it was an ms-dos executable file, does that mean it will not work on my mac? Here is the blog: [URL]

Recently Ive purchased the mac app "Iboostup" and used the app shrinkinking function. I followed the steps the app gave me which was "replace the shruken apps with the old ones". In which case I did and all the programs worked except for Iphoto. Which Is quite annoying because that is my whole entire photo library. Im not too sure if my photo's have been deleted now and Im quite worried to the outcome Im going to get. Please respond as Im very anxious.

Has anyone else noticed this friendly looking executable file in their iTunes library?
It appears to be created and recreated by iTunes, but it shares it's name with a nasty piece of spyware so I'm really not liking it being there.
Anyone seen this guy or got any insight as to why iTunes would be creating it?

I have a problem with Unix Executable Files. When I access a file on our server using 10.4.x most files display as Unix Executable File. The same file accessed using 10.3.x displays the proper file creator icon and description. This seems to be a Tiger issue and it is causing a lot of grief. Many of the files are Quark and fonts. Adding extensions to the files is not an option.

i have been looking through previous discussions re these type of files but its all well and truley above me. I have been given a video file and when copied to 'finder' it showed it was a unix executable file and it opened Terminal, again made no sense to me. I was informed to download MPEG Streamclip with no luck and the jargon I have read is goobledegook to me,

I have a program that I must run on Windows as it is not supported on Mac. I have a MacBook Pro running OS X Lion 10.7.3 with a partioned drive Running Windows 7. Currently, I am rebooting to access the Windows side, but will eventually use the parallel software that is available, but baby steps first. (I am a new Mac user by the way, trying to get rid of the PC, but have found our accounting software is not supported for mac - inconceiveable I know!). So, I have an executable file that I need to launch and cant quite figure it out. I also have Boot Camp, but honestly don't have a clue what it does.Â

I installed the new EFI update for my MBA Mid 2011 (the software updater said it is recomended). The update went fine and restarted the mac afterwards.Â
Then while booting the apple logo turns to a grey forbidden sign and nothing happens from there. I turned the mac off and tried again. Same thing.Â
Then I booted the recovery partition and tried to repair my disk. It says that it can't repair the disk because it is corrupted.Â
I have to erase the disk. There is some unbackuped data on it and I can't get it out using a linux-live because my disk is encrypted.

Old Macbook Pro died yesterday. (details unimportant, was planning to replace soon anyway)New Macbook Pro will arrive tomorrow.I have an up-to-date Time Machine backup. Over the past four years, I filled up the old machine with all sorts of clutter, most of which I don't need or want. I do want to transfer my mailboxes in Mail, my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and a few specific subdirectories of my Documents folder. Is there an easy way to just get these few things, or am I better off using Setup Assistant to transfer everything, then pruning ruthlessly?

I get a spinning grey wheel that will not stop after I power up. I finally started up, by holding the Command and R keys down. This took me to the recovery area where I checked my HD out with Disk Utility. Everything checks out ok. Permissions, etc.
Are there any other keys I can hold down during startup to get to my login area. Otherwise, I may have to do a reinstall of Lion. I have so many other programs, files, etc. and my Time Machine backup disk is no good.OR, is there a way to do a "custom install" of Lion that will just put the Systm Files back on.I have a feeling this is related to a System-Library-Core file that I was having problems with before my current problem.
If all fails and I have to reinstall Lion, is there a way to get back all my Safari Bookmarks, iTunes files, Images, iCal events, etc. that are on my iPod Touch back onto my computer. I back up to iCloud, from my Macbook Pro and my iPod Touch.

Just did an upgrade to the latest version of OS X 10.7.4. Once restart, the MBP stops and a message of "You need to restart your computer. Hold down power..." Did all that, still same message. Did a safe mode start up, but same message. Saw something with regard to kernel panic. But didn't see of what to do or how to fix the problem.Â
What should I do? If it can't be fix, is there a way to start and restore from time machine? Because it stuck at the start up screen and nothing I can do. Â

I just downloaded the Photoshop CS6 Beta on my Macbook Air (August 2011) with Lion 10.7.3. The Adobe installer app fails to launch. I just installed CS6 on my Mac Mini Server with no problems and in fact, created a new user on the MBA and the installer app will launch and install CS6 under that user account. I have run the 'repair permissions' utility on the hard drive. What is going on inside my main user account that is preventing this app from initializing?

Okay, so my iMac has been slowing down recently and I have gotten the pop-up saying the start up disk is full. When I got this, I went through and deleted a lot of things and moved things onto my external hard-drive. I can't remember how much space it got me, but it only lasted a few days. The same pop-up came up and I was confused because I hadn't really downloaded anything or done anything to use that space. Okay, so I delete more stuff. This second time I deleted enough (my whole downloads folder I forgot about) to get 15GB of space back. That was just a few days ago. Today, I got the same pop-up and had only 1GB of space left. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING especially 14GB worth at least for me to run out of space again.
