I have a problem with Unix Executable Files. When I access a file on our server using 10.4.x most files display as Unix Executable File. The same file accessed using 10.3.x displays the proper file creator icon and description. This seems to be a Tiger issue and it is causing a lot of grief. Many of the files are Quark and fonts. Adding extensions to the files is not an option.

It appears to be created and recreated by iTunes, but it shares it's name with a nasty piece of spyware so I'm really not liking it being there.
Anyone seen this guy or got any insight as to why iTunes would be creating it?
i have been looking through previous discussions re these type of files but its all well and truley above me. I have been given a video file and when copied to 'finder' it showed it was a unix executable file and it opened Terminal, again made no sense to me. i've searched the forums about fonts showing up as unix executable and haven't been able to find a solution - is there any way to restore the fonts? currecntly, the fonts are showing up as 0kb or 4kb.

Two months ago I switched web hosting providers/services from a Linux server to a UNIX server. For the most part the functionality is fine but the ability to upload files using any FTP client is near impossible. We've tried Fetch (4.x and 5.x) Filezilla, Cyberduck, Dreamweaver, and an old copy of GoLive but it takes 6 minutes or more to upload a 230byte file!. The upload is relatively fast but it hangs up on the exiting handshake, or drops the connection and has to reconnect.
We spoke with Fetch and tested both copies on their UNIX server---no problem. We've tried our other clients on other UNIX, Windows, and Linux servers---no problem. We've had the web host and our service provider look at DNS blocks, etc. and all seems to be fine. Pings and trace routes seem fine. The web host company indicated that they believed that it was an issue with their server but eventually threw up their hands and said that they couldn't figure it out (not Mac friendly I suspect). My questions is two fold:
1) Can anyone give me an idea what IS the problem?
2) Can anyone recommend a good 'Mac-friendly' web hosting service that doesn't have issues with Mac's, will allow installation of a variety of CMS, eCommerce solutions, and of course seamless FTP access with variety of clients.

However on later inspection it appeared to be a kitchen website. Anyway on the website there was what appeared to be a video, and I was asked to do something, although it was in a windows style 'window' rather that the OS X style. But there is one item "Allow UNIX tools to run", I don't know how to verify its function. Other all could work very well. I ever tried such as ps, wc, tail in command, but they could still work.
I have a program that I must run on Windows as it is not supported on Mac. I have a MacBook Pro running OS X Lion 10.7.3 with a partioned drive Running Windows 7. Currently, I am rebooting to access the Windows side, but will eventually use the parallel software that is available, but baby steps first. Aight, the thing is he got an UNIX-file, he want to install. I found out, that Fink are very useful here. However, we could install Fink, but not the UNIX archive. So here it goes. Simple question: How do you install an UNIX archive using Fink?

iMac 27, 2.8 Quad Core, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB HD running 10.7.3Â lead in > Lately I am having trouble with Aperture 3.2.3 who doesn't let me make some image adjustments "out of the blue". To correct this I usially have to reinstall Aperture from scratch. Trying to do so made me find out that I can't execute the Aperture trial 3.1 dmg file or any other dmg file on my iMac. When i double klick on a dmg file it will flash once and then just sit there doing nothing. The dmg "Get Info" window shows that the file is associated with the DiskImageMounter.app as supposed to. I have no glue why it won't execute these files and open the installer. I have tried everything from executing with disk image to repair permissions etc, etc. and I have read all forums and threats I could find but to no avail. Â
The only way to fix this is reinstalling OSX 10.7.3. After reinstalling Lion everything is just fine - for a while. I am able to reinstall aperture with the trial version dmg file. All other dmg files will also execute. For now I was able to work with my reinstalled system for the last seven days with no glitches, but last night same problem occured as described earlier. I have also checked my harddrive with disk utility and onyx. Both apps say HD is just fine.

so I wanted to change my documents icon to a really fancy icon so I found this site called [URL] and followed the steps to change it into a suitcase of some sort. But my documents wouldn't open, and a dialog box popped up and said something about how no application can be run with this and it had the option to choose an application. So I deleted the suitcase, and now the folder has turned into a UNIX file which is not accessible.
I have a cd from a Dr. with x-ray images on it (supposedly). The files say "Unix Executable File". It seems I have no application with which to open them on my fancy desktop.... Can you recommend a software program to open or translate the files so that they are readable, and perhaps compatible with iPhoto?

How do I batch change files' UNIX settings? I have web sharing turned on and have it set up so it's serve up the files and folders on my hard disk. It works great, but when I look at the folders it's showing in the web page, approximately 1 in 10 folders just isn't being displayed. The OS X permissions on these folders is all set to "read and write" for everyone, so I presume there is some sort of other UNIX or Apache file/folder settings that are keeping these folders from being displayed in the webpage. How do I make these hidden folders show up in my web page's displayed directory of folders?

I want to replace all _ in a file name with a Space. Is there an easy way to do this? Or, maybe a free utility I can download? I'm trying to clean up my files!
Since installing Filemaker Server 12 on our Lion Server 10.7.3, the Webmail is no longer working. I know with previous installations of Filemaker Server I have been asked whether I wanted to keep the system version of PHP or install PHP which comes with Filemaker Server, but I don't recall being prompted about it on this occasion. We are a small business with 2 mac mini's, 2 macbook laptops and another macbook pro laptop who is remote. (the remote laptop is not a deal breaker) We are beginning to have a nightmare with file storage, everyone is saving their own work to their own workstation and it's becoming difficult to share files etc. Basically, our requirements for a solution are:Â
- Sensible file server, allowing all on-site computers to use the server as a main file storage
- Something I can back all computers up with from time machine
- Useful to restrict certain users to certain files
- Useful to have external access to files when off site and via the likes of iPad etc. Â
I've looked in a NAS Raid drive and the OsX Lion Server and also the Time capsule and am just so confused at what to buy. Although the calendar sharing options etc. on the server would be useful, we can also do this via icloud. It's mainly the file access that is such a problem. Â I wonder whether a time capsule would be good enough as a file server - which we then back up to the cloud to secure the data.
We have a brand new Mac Pro (12 core with 64GB of RAM) running OS X Lion Server in a corporate environment. The server is running only file sharing and software update servers, and we have around 40 users who need to be connected over AFP at all times. This company runs 24/7 and we have an XSan environment using an ATTO Celerity 8GB 4 channel fiber card (84EN) along with a 6 port 10GB Ethernet card. The Ethernet card is configured in a link aggregation bond using ports 1-4. The idea is that clients who do not have fiber cards installed on their machines can still connect to the SAN via Ethernet and this file server. They AFP connect to the share, and of course the share is the SAN. It's a single mount point and everyone has read/write access.Â
The issue is that this machine keeps crashing (multiple times per day) and I cannot find any reason why. Syslog shows nothing of value and I've called into Apple Enterprise Support who also brought nothing to the table.Â
We initially had SMB and AFP file sharing activated but as soon as a Windows 7 client connected the machine was brought down. So, I disabled SMB via terminal (sudo serveradmin stop smb) and deactivated it via the Server app for the share point). That at least allows the machine to be up for 4-6 hours before crashing again.Â
This is seemingly the simplest of setups for file sharing and I would've thought that this beast of a machine would be able to handle being a file server without issue for far more than 40 clients. I'm seeing high CPU usage, which Apple support told me was perfectly normal (around 60% on the kernel_task process and around 55% on the AppleFileServer process). It also seems to consume all 64GB of memory, though it shows 60GB as inactive, but at the same time it's paging in and out.Â
Virtually all of the clients are running Lion (10.7.4), the server itself is running 10.7.4. There are a few ethernet connected clients running 10.6 along with two running 10.5. As I mentioned I disabled SMB so there are no Windows computers connecting to this machine at this time (though it would be nice to get that functionality back if AFP can be stabilized).Â
This company simply cannot be down, especially not multiple times per day. The only way to bring things back and running from a crash is to hard boot the machine via the power button as you cannot perform a restart or a shutdown. Once the machine comes back up everything is back to working order for a few more hours until it happens again.

I had a goodworking SUS (10.6.8) working but the drive is getting full so i change the location of the files to another disk (in the xserve)and follow instructions from Apple (page 84 from the manual System Imaging) sudo cp -p /private/var/db/swupd/html /Volumes/My_Volume/My_Software_Updates_Folder/This works and i copy the files to a new drive. I also change the SUS so that theu host files for Lion clients url..works also, start SUS in Server Admin but when clients wants to connect i get an error that there is no SUS available and when i use the browser for an check i get een Forbidden error url...ForbiddenYou don't have permission to access /index.sucatalog on this server.Apache/2.2.21 (Unix) Server at 127.0.0.1 Port 80.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently attained a new client for IT support, and they have a xserve running Mac 10.4.11, for which the previous IT company supporting it did not give them the admin password. Also they don't have any restore discs of any kind. What I would like to do is wipe the server and upgrade to the newest version, because currently there are only two people touching the server, so now would be an optimal time to do the upgrade before it increases to more. But my main concern is getting access to the files of other users on the server so that I can copy them to an external hard drive, (i'm from the PC environment so essentially taking ownership of the files). What is the best way for me to do this in the Mac world?

Some Apps, (e.g. VLC Player, but others also) won't start if I open them regularly, they're just bouncing in my Dock until I kill them.
BUT, if I open the App as a folder (Rightclick, Show Package Contents) and find the executable (Contents/MacOS) and start it, it works just fine. Launching the shouldn't do much other than location this executable and running it.
Recently Ive purchased the mac app "Iboostup" and used the app shrinkinking function. I followed the steps the app gave me which was "replace the shruken apps with the old ones". In which case I did and all the programs worked except for Iphoto. Which Is quite annoying because that is my whole entire photo library. Im not too sure if my photo's have been deleted now and Im quite worried to the outcome Im going to get. Please respond as Im very anxious.
