I need to know how to calibrate my monitor so that I know what my photographs are going to look like before they get printed. Either that or would it be better to buy a third party calibrator, like X-rite?

I've done a search and not really found what I'm after. So here it is..
I like to edit photos, but I've never been confident in doing this on my Macbook, as I edit them and then on another display they always look different and over exposed.
Is it just a bad screen for colour accuracy or is it the calibration? What's the best way to sort this?

I just got Aperture and, though I've been a pretty serious photographer for a few years now, I'm starting to get more into doing actual prints and messing with RAW and thus realizing how important color correction and calibrating is. I definitely realize my MBPs screen, my external monitor, and my printer are all out of sync with each other when it comes to this. The only problem is I really have to idea where to begin to fix this.
And before anybody even thinks the word "Search," I don't want to try to piece together random threads on calibration and attempt to figure it out; that's how lost I am.

I have a MPB 15" bought on the very day of release. I am now using it to edit photos for selling to various publishers. Do I need to get a monitor calibrator like the Spyder3 Pro?
I went to this link to perform 'by eye' checks on my screen:
[URL]
my monitor is uncalibrated, yet it passed the tests with the following scores:
white test: 253 is distinguishable from white
black test: 7 is distinguishable from black
hue test: the two samples are clearly distinguishable
gamma: standing back the middle grey matches the outside gray
These tests were seemingly meant to show how bad an uncalibrated monitor would fare. However it came out very well.

I've been trying to get decent color on my Acer AL2216W display to no avail.
First, I attempted to fiddle with the brightness and contrast levels because I've been having trouble seeing really light grays. I used this as a guide so my whites, grays, and blacks looked good but then my colors were completely off.
[URL]
Then, (after resetting all my changes) I downloaded a color profile from the Acer support website. Surprisingly, that profile is completely off.
Next, I tried using Mac OS X's Color Calibration utility in System Pref > Displays > Color > Calibrate. I ended up with incorrect colors & grays again.
Am I doing something wrong? Could someone please direct me about how to achieve proper colors and contrast?
Also, if any of you have an Acer AL2216W and you have made a correct color profile, please pass it along!

Thing is I got hold of a 1ghz 17" iMac almost for free, it had a dead logicboard (I checked it with a voltage-meter), but I figured I could fix it and have a small hobby project-thingie going on. Well I just got a new logic board today, for a 1ghz 17" iMac g4.
Things is I only get a bright grey screen from my Mac when I boot. I've tried connecting it to a external display and that works fine. Everything is there.
I then reinstalled Tiger on it, with the computer connected to my external screen. And I still have the same problem. (I have now disconnected the ext. screen and is controlling the iMac from my MBP). So at least it isn't the installation.
So what is the problem? I can via an Apple Keyboard control the brightness on the blank screen, which would indicate that it does react to input of some degree.
I've read that if the inverter is dead or anything else is dead, you would get a rolling grey screen, flicker or something like that and not a steady bright grey. One thing I'm thinking is. What if somehow this logic board was for a 15" 1ghz imac g4? Can I check this?
I read that long thread about guys buying hi-res displays for their MBPs, and they had to replace some display profile? Could I maybe fix it with a different display profile-file?
I'm really confused by all this, and would appreciate any help I can get.
Model: PowerMac6,1
CPU-Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
and
the gfx chip is a GeforceMX4 with 32mb.
The display is a mode 9c27, manufacturer 610, serialnumber 00000, manufacture date: B84D7200.

I'm using an external monitor (acer p235h) hooked up to my mini display port w/ an hdmi adapter. Before I updated I had no problems but when I updated to 10.5.8 it seems that I have some "flickering" issue. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the refresh rate but basically it looks like my monitor is slightly vibrating. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Since I updated Snow Leopard to Version 10.6.8 on my MBP15, I can't use my SyncMaster P2770 HD (Samsung) in its highest 1920x1080 resolution anymore. I can choose 1920x1080 in the monitor-preferences, but having done that the resolution remains at 1680x1050 @60Hz (I can see it and even the monitor's info-menu says, that i still use 1680x1050 @60Hz). I use a Mini DisplayPort to VGA-Adapter and a VGA-cable.

I updated with the latest Lion patch yesterday and since then Entourage has either hung or taken a very long time to update from our 2003 Exchange server (I have MS Office 2011 but as you're probably aware, there are issues integrating with a 2003 Exchange server). how this might be fixed, short of updating both our 2003 Windows Server to Windows Server 2008 x64 and Exchange to 2010 so I (the only Mac user out of 85 staff) can use Outlook 2011?

Started the 10.7.4 install, and it halted. Turned my Mac off, started it back up, and apparently the 10.7.4 update didn't install, but it has caused the Mail function to not work AT ALL - I get a long error report that is auto sent to Apple.
I downloaded Lion from the Apple store, but have my Snow Leopard disk. How do I go about re-installing Mail?

"Software Update can't connect to the Update Server" - so I can't even check to see if updates are available. This has been going on for sometime. For a while if I created a new admin account and used that it would work, but not today.Tried creating a new admin account but to no avail.
I clcik on the Apple Icon, (top left hand side of screen), click on SOFTWARE UPDATE, it runs for a split second, then: [URL]after which I check my internet connect to see that it's fine. (And I attempt to run SU with nothing else using the internet). [URL] I've checked the forum and found a few people with the same problem. I've tried deleting PLISTs and using 008.008.008.008 DNS address, [URL], but still cannot get it to work. I still have my old G4 Power running OS 10.5.8 connected to the same modem (Netcomm NB6PLus4w Modem which has 4 ports) as my Mac Mini, and it runs Software Update without any issues. So it's not my internet connection and it's not the Apple server, so it's something about the Mac Mini that's not right.

I already have my monitor calibrated to more-or-less match online photo labs that I use through Flickr. However, I just bought a HP C7280 and all my pictures seem to come out very low on the magenta/red side. Rather than having to either recalibrate my monitor and edit all the thousands of pictures I have to warm them up, is there any way that I can just calibrate the printer to print a bit 'redder'?

your battery drain in your laptop to 0, and then charge it to full? I am under this assumption. Please let me know if this is wrong.Anywho, so today I decided to let my battery drain to 0, and then normally it would sleep and I'd wake it up after plugging it in.. but this time I had to actually press the power button, and a gray screen appeared with a meter-like thing to illustrate it "waking up" I guess?

I've got my SSD in an optibay and am using it as my boot drive. As such, I've disabled hibernation on my MBP.I am wondering about battery calibration, as you need to drain the battery down fully and have the MBP enter the hibernation state to properly calibrate the battery.
