MacBook Air :: Thunderbolt Update Just Kill Ability To Use External Monitor?

Jun 11, 2012

My external monitor stopped working after performing tonight's software updates. 2011 MBA 13inch running 10.7.4. Computer takes 2 minutes to boot to a grey pattern on the MBA and an all blue desktop on my external. Boots fine when I unplug the monitor and reboot.

MacBook Pro :: Losing Ability To Use Two External Monitors

Jun 18, 2010

The hardest thing moving away from my 2.4MBP was losing the ability to use two external monitors. Previously I'd been using a Matrox Digital TrippleHead2Go, driving 2 1600x1200 SyncMaster 214T. So I was pretty upset to suddenly be part of the 'Display Port' nightmare that Apple have inflicted upon us. And not just display port, but Mini display port. Anyway, I was glad to see last week that Matrox had everything back in stock again to finally resolve this issue. 'DualHead2Go DP Edition' sounded like the perfect solution, well almost... Of course I needed a mini DP to DP cable on the input side, and since most sensible monitors still use DVI, I needed 2 DP to DVI connector cables.

2 days later the package arrived. My first disappointment was the cables, 70EUR for three 20cm cables. Wow, that's being really mean. Fortunately the kit includes a DP->DP cable of a bit more reasonable length (50cm?) which allowed me to just get the box under the desk. Although of course the 20cm output DP->DVI cables were never going to reach 2 monitors, no matter how I balanced the box. So 2 DVI->DVI cables later and the whole thing was connected. On the software side I didn't bother with the included CD since I wanted to ensure I had the latest drivers - 1.02.01.008. (running on firmware 1.0.38). The software itself was better than my last experience of a head2go product, at least this time I didn't need a windows machine to configure the device! But I did spend some time double checking the specs that my GT330M was actually supported. It seemed only to offer me 800 or 1024 based display resolution. In the end I picked 1024 anyway just to try it, this seemed to trigger the head2go into detecting my actual monitors! although it still took quite some clicking back and forth between the Apple display settings (eventually set to 3200x1200), and the Matrox GXM software.

MacBook Pro :: Is Thunderbolt / Monitor Hot-Swappable

Jun 22, 2012

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro, and I use the VGA adapter to connect to my TV. I always connect/disconnect while the Mac is off. My dad has a new MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt, and I'm getting him a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable. Does he need to have his Mac off while connecting to the TV, or is it hot-swappable?

MacBook Pro :: Thunderbolt Monitor Cable Loose On It?

Feb 27, 2012

I bought my Macbook Pro last september along with my Thunderbolt monitor.Everything was working until today (yes today was my first time bringing my Macbook Pro elsewhere) and when I moved it, the display shut off.then I realized that when I just move the Thunderbolt plug around it would turn on and off the display depending which side I would hold. would it be a problem with the Monitor cable? or a problem with the Macbook Pro itself? both are still under warranty, so I'm not worried, but it saves me the trouble of lugging either (especially the monitor) back to the Apple store.

MacBook Air :: Using DisplayPort (for Monitor) And Thunderbolt At Same Time?

Jun 21, 2012

I have a mid 2011 MacBook Air 13 inch with a single Thunderbolt port. I have the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable which I am able to use to run a Dell 24 inch monitor - this cable connects to both the DisplayPort/Thunderbolt port and also a USB port on the Air. I want to be able to run this Dell monitor, and also run a Thunderbolt hard drive - one with 2 Thunderbolt ports. Is this possible? Can I connect the DisplayPort part of the cable to the pass-through Thunderbolt port on the hard drive, and then connect the hard drive to the Thunderbolt port on the Air? I would like to buy the Apple Thunderbolt display (which would solve this issue), but I suspect it will may refreshed soon. So I don't intend to get one until then.

Since I updated Snow Leopard to Version 10.6.8 on my MBP15, I can't use my SyncMaster P2770 HD (Samsung) in its highest 1920x1080 resolution anymore. I can choose 1920x1080 in the monitor-preferences, but having done that the resolution remains at 1680x1050 @60Hz (I can see it and even the monitor's info-menu says, that i still use 1680x1050 @60Hz). OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Can't Mid-2011 Macbook Air Detect Thunderbolt 1.2.1 Update

Jun 21, 2012

I'm using a 13 inches mid-2011 macbook air with OS X 10.7.4 on 12 June, I found the update of Thunderbolt 1.2 in the system update center and I patched it. Luckliy, this patch didn't kill my kernel as it did to many other machines. But I'm still a bit worried when I learned that this updates messed up a lot of users' machines. Now applle announces the newer version of thunderbolt 1.2.1 to correct what was wrong. But no matter how hard I try to check system updates, I don't have it. I know I could try to download it on the website, but is there any valid reason that I don't get this patch? Will install in creating new problems?

Intel Mac :: Thunderbolt With Mini Display Port Shows Monitor As Generic VGA

Mar 23, 2012

With my 'old' Intel iMac using a Display Port adapter, my 24" LG Monitor would be detected correctly and worked first time. With my new 2011 iMac 27 using a genuine Apple mini DisplayPort adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port, this same monitor now shows up as a generic VGA monitor and the range of resolutions is severely reduced - basically it looks terrible. I've tried disconnecting the cable, reconnecting, using the second Thunderbolt, changing resolutions, detecting displays, showing displays in the menu bar. All with no success.

MacBook :: Using External Monitor With New MB (2.4GHz)/monitor Sleep?

Oct 16, 2008

I picked up a new MacBook yesterday and I noticed a weird issue when coming out of "monitor sleep" mode, not regular sleep mode.

When I move the mouse, the external monitor shows what you see in the picture, kinda like a TV with no signal. The MacBook screen works fine so what I just do is unplug and re-plug in the DVI plug and everything is good again.

My 24 inch Dell monitor worked fine with my M1330 and other computers so I know it's not that. Does anyone have the same issue or maybe give me some light on this?

MacBook Pro :: Detects An External Monitor But No Display On The Monitor?

As said, my current set up is an HDMI - DVI cable (HDMI to monitor and DVI to adapter) and my DVI - mini DisplayPort adapter, everything is connected fine but when I turn on the monitor, it says cable not found... and nothing is displayed on the screen but on the Macbook side of things, it sees the monitor is connected (I can extend the screen and leave the screen) but other than that, it appears I cannot get an image on the monitor, pressing every button on the monitor does not work either.

Any other information that may seem necessary, let me know. I tried clearing my PRAM and clearing the power and such but nothing seems to work.

Intel Mac :: Thunderbolt Update Crashes It?

Jun 12, 2012

After installing a bunch of updates; inluding iPhoto, iTunes and iMovie; the culprit seems to be the Thunderbolt thing. After the installation a message came up that none of the updates could be installed. There's only a Restart-Button — that doesn't restart the iMac. The screen has its grey login background and the Mac is stalled. About 10 minutes later I turned off the iMac and then turned it back on again. What lead to an instant Kernel Panic. I then reinstalled Lion from the Recovery HD, installed all the updates; which included two restarts that performed fine. In the final session there are the iPhoto and iMovie updates — and the Thunderbolt thing. Downloading and installing seems to work fine; but then I get the above mentioned message AGAIN.

MacBook Pro :: Make External Hard Drive Hook Up To Thunderbolt Port

So I have 2 USB Ports on my Mac. I use both of them and I am looking to get a Mic for recording youtube stuff. I use one for my wireless mouse, and I use the other for an external hard drive because the amout of space on my Mac is no-where near enough for what I am going to use up.

I am just wondering if there is a way I can either:

1. Get more USB ports (if its possible)

2. Hook up my mouse to a Thunderbolt port (again if that is possible)

or 3. Hook up my External Hard-Drive to the thunderbolt port.

Hardware :: Powerbook With Broken Monitor - Force Boot To External Monitor?

Jan 31, 2010

I have a G4 powerbook with an LCD that only displays the top 25% of the screen. I've been using an external monitor with it just fine. Today, I reinstalled the OS and ran into a problem. The main OSX startup menu (you know, where it asks for your location, timezone, personal info, etc) is prompting me for information, and I can't see the forms to fill them in! The external monitor defaults to "extended" as opposed to "mirrored", and the forms are embedded, meaning I can't drag them over to my external monitor. Obviously, if I can't fill out these forms and get to the desktop, the laptop is completely useless.

Does anyone know how to force the external monitor to be "mirrored" from startup? Is there a keycommand?

MacMini 2012 External Thunderbolt Boxes For FCPX

Apr 20, 2012

This was discussd here and there last year but here we are again. We left this subject with the following collective thoughts with some varations and name callings:

- MacMini is OK to run FCPX when maxed out with RAM and editing are done in Proxy.

- MacMini quad server has advantages over the standard MacMini but the GPU ( if there is such thing in MacMini ) is not really up to the task.

- The bottle neck is the GPU and the slow drives generally.

A year has passed and manu vendors are displaying thunderbolt boxes in ranges that could take an express card to all the way up to Two PCIe2 cards and FibreChannels and 10GB ethernetcards..Any of thesee boxes could help the MacMini to rise to the battle for FCPX performance? Is it possible to put a high-end PC video card in Sonnet thunderbolt box and get a real GPU out of the combo for example?
