The student folder permissions show that the owner has read & write but the home sync fails. Says the share isn't available.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Home Folder Sync Not Working?
Apr 10, 2012I have a lion server set up on a mac mini. I have set up an OD to manage network accounts through the server app. My workflow for setting up users is:Â
1. using the server app add a new user
2. I have a home folders users directory set up under file sharing and set to be available for home directories - so I select this share as the home folder for the user
3. I user the WGM app to then set up mobiility through the preferences tab to create always and to sync the home and preferences
4. I check that the home folder is set correctly under the user account in WGMÂ
When I log in to the client machine (regardless of whether or not I have first logged in on the server or not) the client presents an error saying that it can not log in and can not access the server at that time. The client stays on the user login screen.Â
If I then change the users home folder on the server to local I can then log in on the client machine and create the account. If I elect not to create the home folder on the client machine the rainbow ball of death occurs and the machine hangs. So I instead log in and select to create the local home folder. I then log out of the user and change the user setting on the server to point the home folder to the correct share instead of on the local setting.Â
I then log back on to the client machine and can log in without any problems. HOwever, I get an error message if I try to sync saying that the home folder is not accessible. This is despite the fact that the home folder, and the server et al, can be mounted in finder and I can copy and paste documents etc to and from the server. I have full and expected access to the server and the associated storage. For some reason home sync continues to say that the home folder can not be found (in fact that the server can not be found) whenever I try to sync. I have the OD bound to the client machine and have no problems seeing the users and being able to access the OD from the client machine.Â

OS X :: Reinstalling Snow Leopard - How To Preserve My Home Folder
Dec 20, 2009I need to reinstall Snow Leopard over my current Snow Leopard installation because the system has failed. I need to know what will happen if I proceed with an install. Because there are no options for installation, I dont know how to do an archive and install and it is essential that I have my home folder and it's contents intact. Does anyone know if reinstalling snow leopard will automatically archive my home folder or if there is something else I need to do?

May 15, 2012Our users logon to our 2008 Windows Domain and their windows home folder comes up as a folder called 'Work' on the mac taskbar. This is fine.When they open Microsoft Word e.g. and do a save you can't see this 'Work' folder in the Finder tree. Do I have to set up some kind of script - I just want a shortcut to this 'Work' home folder in Finder....how can you put one there automatically?  Is there any easy way so if they save to their mac 'Documents' folder it just get's re-routed to their 'Work' folder?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Home Directories When Installing On Multiple Partitions
May 11, 2012I have a macpro setup with two partitions.Originally one partition assigned to Snow Leopard.I log in using a network user (using OSX server) and that user has local Admin rights.I setup a new instance of Snow Leopard on the secondary Partition and logged in using the network user.This had the effect of using the partition 1 Home directory for this user and I can't get the secondary partition to use itself for storing the users home directory.The workaround I have is to log in to Partition 2 snow leopard with a local admin user then temporarily rename the Users folder on partition 1. Next login to partition 2 as the network user, then everything gets created on partition 2 as expected.Finally rename the Partition 1 Users folder back.Now I can log in to either partitoin with the same user and have different local home setups.
Anyone else had this or is there a better procedure for setting up multiple partitions? The same happens with LION. I need to keep a snowleoapard partition with all the setup I currently have, but start a new LION partition.I don't want any cross contamination, hence the requirement for separation.

May 20, 2012I have renamed my home directory using the root then I restarted the computer. Then, I logged on with the same account that I have and I found that all the old folders have been moved to a new folder in the new directory under the old directory name.How to get back!I tried to rename it again by replacing the new name with the old name but it didn't work.. is there anyway to undo the change!! May 23, 2012iMac OS X 10.6.8. previously migrated account -- need to rename the account at the destination. Step 6 in the support page does not occur. I never get a chance to hit OK to this: 6. Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents. A red flag appears in the field that conflicts (either the short name or the full name). The name(s) cannot be changed! must cancel out.Â

Apr 27, 2012We are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 in a classroom. Hard drive has two partitions, one for OS and apps, the other for student's files. Computers are bind to the Active Directory. Unfortunately, local home folders are on the boot parition. Over a time when apps FCP and Avid are frequently used, the boot partition gets filled with files and finally it's full. With zero kb available, users cannot even login anymore. Manually deleting files by admin is cumbersome and time-consuming task.Â
I'm looking for a way to keep /Users folder clean. Putting user's home folders to server is not an option, because of latency issues etc. Unfortunately the local home folder is the default saving place when user issues the Save As command. I've tried to tinker with the User Template to lock the Documents folder but apps like Microsoft Word and Final Cut Pro go crazy when they cannot save there. Forwarding /Users to other partition does not solve the problem, it just moves the problem to another place. Logout Hook to automatically purging the files could be an solution, but there's always one hapless soul who saves his or hers files to wrong place and loses them. Or maybe a script which looks at the modfication date and deletes old files.Â

Feb 25, 2012Mountain Lion won't run on my Intel-graphics dual core white MacBook. Lion should run, but I've been disappointed with Lion and it is now end-of-life (mercifully short). So I've a perfectly fine and responsive Snow Leopard machine. Only problem -- when MobileMe dies in June Address Book on that device won't sync with our iPhone [1].Â
I know Apple doesn't allow 3rd parties to sync anything to iCloud. So there's no solution that way. One approach is to use a 3rd party app to sync Address Book on this machine with Address Book on another machine that in turn syncs with iCloud.Â
The easier approach is to go all Google; sync Address Book to Google, set the iPhone to use a Google Apps account. (Ironic that Apple's obsoleting a solid MacBook should drive us to Google.)Â [1] For various reasons the iPhone syncs to another machine with our family app/media library. So I can't sync Address Book via iTunes.

Sep 30, 2009After installing snow leopard I've had constant issues with mobileme, first with data conflicts, after I choose which data I think is correct (I usually guess) it then (sometimes after several minutes) constantly props me for a password. It's constantly saying this:
It says this WHILE LOGGED IN, I've logged out a million times and logged in, the password is correct. After I log out and try to log back in, it also gives me this error.

Feb 15, 2012Is there a command to force time sync on Snow Leopard machines? I have lots machine which are joined to windows domain controller using third party utility (AdmitMac by Thursby). Even though under Day & Time system preference, I have set the machine to sync to our server but machine are still not correcting the time.Â
I have tried following methods to force the machines to sync: I have manually selected the machine to sych with Apple but that does not change the time at all (even after couple of reboots)Changing the date and time to something completely different (year, month and day) then rebooted machine then force it back to our server but that does not change machine time either.Only thing which has worked so far is that I have manually adjusted that time to match the next working machine. All of this has caused me lot of trouble in Mac labs because machine will not allow anyone to login and I have remove it from the domain and then re-join back.

Mar 23, 2010Firstly I am sorry if this has been posted before, but I did have a look at the Snow Leopard FAQ & a browse through the current topics. And secondly, I am also sorry if I am not using appropriate computer language to describe certain things. I have a 17 inch Macbook Pro I bought in the middle of last year. Before Snow Leopard. So when Snow Leopard came along I went for the upgrade without looking around at compatibility issues with certain software.
So after the upgrade, my EyeTV didn't work, and neither did my internet (I use the ones with the USB stick). So I couldn't even go online to get my EyeTV update. So in my (brief) panick I re-installed Leopard, which wasn't a great idea I guess, because all of a sudden my HD space went down to 50GB from my 500GB of storage. Now I know I didn't have the full 500GB since I did have some photos, music & videos on board. But surely 50GB remaining is quite ridiculous. I think it probably performed a Time Machine backup for me.
Anyway... that was awhile ago. And I was happy to carry on with what I had. But now I think I would like to try what Snow Leopard has to offer. But with only 18GB of space remaining, I think the best option might be to reformat and start over. What do you guys think? My other option is to try to delete as much as I can spare to make room for Snow Leopard. Sorry if this question is a silly one, but I have done a lot of things with my iPhone & with this Mac without thinking & asking first & I have always regretted it. Thanks for any help or suggestions you all can offer.
Software :: Upgrade From Leopard To Snow Leopard Not Working?
Feb 17, 2010I have mac mini (early 2009) running leopard and want to upgrade to snow leopard. I've bought a disk from a local store and when I try to install I get as far as 45 minutes to go when the installer reboots the computer and says it will continue to install after reboot. So it reboots kicks the disk out and reboots back into Leopard. The Apple site says it is probably a bad disk, so I got another one, still does the same. Apple also says it might be the dvd drive, I have no other issues with the drive, it installs the original leopard disks without problem, it reads video dvd's without problem, it verifies the snow disk as perfect.
