PowerPC :: Repair Extension Program For The Powerbook G5?

Sep 8, 2008

My neighbor's 3 year old iMac G5 (iSight) recently developed the all-too-common lines problem. She took it to the genius bar and they told her it would be $760 to fix. This was rubbish, so I set her up with an external monitor until I could figure something else out.Today, I decided to call Apple and try my luck at getting them to repair it for her. The first person I talked to told me to take it to the genius bar, so I asked politely to speak to his supervisor. At first, he tried to tell me about the repair extension program for the power issue, which this computer was not eligible for, though the serial number was close. He thought the problem was related to that. I told him several times that it was not related in any way. I then explained to him that I felt Apple should fix the screen free of charge because it was a defective product. He then said "I'm going to have to say no. You've used the computer for almost three years, I don't see how that is defective" I countered back by saying that it was not an isolated issue and that hundreds of people are having the same problem with their computers in the same serial number range.

PowerPC :: Dead HD - Repair Extension Program Offered By Apple?

Dec 21, 2007

First the question, then the story:

Does anyone suspect that a dead hard drive in a 20" iMac G5 could somehow be related to the component failure described in the iMac G5 Repair Extension Program offered by Apple?

Although the article does not list hard drive failure as one of the symptoms caused by this component failure, I am still concerned that it could possibly be related, based on the fact that it was purchased during the date range specified, and the serial number falls within the range specified.

So here's the story: A short while back, the iMac suddenly stopped booting. It only got as far as a gray screen with a small folder image in the center, alternating between a question (?) mark and the Mac Finder face. After asking around and checking a few forums, the ultimate consensus was that it was unable to detect the hard drive. So I took it to a Genius Bar; the fellow who was helping me tested the startup, then took out the hard drive and put it in an enclosure to test it, and concluded that the hard drive is dead. He pointed out that, even in the enclosure, it had no power at all; the only solution would be to buy a new hard drive.

I did some more online searching after coming home, and found quite a few forums discussing the above warranty extension, several of which cited the logic board as the problem component referenced in the article from Apple, and that there were bad caps in these models that were overheating. Sadly, I don't really know what any of that means... But should I be hesitant to simply replace the hard drive, for fear that the same thing could happen again? And does the fact that the article references power issues, combined with the fact that the Mac Genius told me that there was no power in the hard drive, mean that it could perhaps be related? Do I have a case to try and pursue the extension repair?

Intel Mac :: Repair Corrupted Mov. Files?

Apr 2, 2012

I edited a wedding on Final Cut studio. Both the software as well as all my uploaded footage collected on an external harddrive. BOOM  My hard drive completely becomes corrupt and I can't mount it (meaning my computer doesn't recognize the drive). I then purchased a data-recovery software and, after about two hours, recovered the corrupted files. I then downloaded "VLC" as well as "DIGITAL REBELLION" to repair the files and they cannot seem to do so. Case and point I need these MOV. files as soon as possible and I turn to this forum for guidance of any kind. My Mac is a desktop iMac. It's completely updated and I'm running on iOS X 7.3.

OS X :: Repair Permissions Again And Again / External FW Drive With Leopard

Feb 11, 2010

After some various installations and file copy from/to external hard drives i ran the repair permissions on the bootup hard drive.

There was a listing about a mile long. Whoa, that does not look good to me.

So, i ran the persmissions repair again: another mile long listing: yikes.

Yep, ran another permissions repair and same thing.

How many times do you have to run permissions until it just show a few permissions that had to be corrected ? Or is this a sign that the system is in trouble.

This was an external FW drive with Leopard run by iMac 3.06GHz.

OS X :: Installing Snow Leopard On MBA - Disk Need Repair

Aug 31, 2009

I have a MacBook Air and just bought snow leopard. While I was trying to install it (through the use of the optical drive of my mac mini), a message came up "the disk "macintosh HD" needs to be repaired". Go to the computer with the mac OS X install DVD, open 'remote install mac OS X' (located in the utilities folder in the app folder) and follow the onscreen instructions for restarting your computer using the DVD. When the mac OS X installer opens, follow the onscreen instructions to install mac OS X. during the installation, the installer repairs the disk automatically". I'm worried about losing files on my macbook air (and do not use time machine) so should i be backing my files up?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Disk Util Can't Repair, Operation Not Supported

May 8, 2012

I am having problems with a partition that I use as my Time Machine backup. I have searched various previous discussions but can't seem to find a solution. My HDD is split into 2 partitions and the Time Machine one doesn't mount, the other works fine. When I try to mount it using Disk Utility I get the error message: "The disk X could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and retry mounting".  Then without doing anything else I get another message "Mac OS X can't repair the disk X. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can." Which disappeared after a few seconds and the partition mounted. When I try to repair the disk I get the above error message and another: "Disk Utility stopped repairing X. Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files." This appears after it says 'Updating boot support partitions…'. When mounted, I can open it in Finder, but when I try to copy 'Backups.backupdb' I get a message saying "The operation can't be completed because it isn't supported." This is the same for 'X's Computer' and each backup folder. I can copy files and folders in each backup folder but this would be very tedious and probably Time Machine wouldn't be able to use the resulting files. I have tried restoring the partition, through Disk Utility, to another HDD, but it just copies across the error. Disk Utility has been rather buggy as well, hanging on various operations involving the partition.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Changed Contents Of Receipts Folder Now Permissions Won't Repair

May 29, 2012

I restored from backup OS X 10.5.8 Leopard using Time Machine to a brand new drive. After manually migrating some data to the newly restored boot drive I accidentally replaced the /Library/receipts folder with an out dated receipts folder. The problem is there is no way to get the proper receipts folder back so I'm stuck with a receipts folder filled with permissions that are not in sync with the list. I'm assuming this blunder is causing the error: The underlying task reported failure on exit, every time I try to repair permissions. I need this boot drive to be stable and want to avoid installing from DVD the OS from scratch. The drive checks out ok with every test accept repair permissions. The system is running VERY stable now on this brand new WD Caviar Black 1 TB drive. Do you think it's safe to clone this drive even though repair permissions won't work anymore?

OS X :: Program Updates - Where Files Are Stored

Jun 7, 2009

Not so much for Apple Software update, but when re-installing OS X after sometime, smaller programs like Perian or firefox install, then come up with an update. I like to keep the install files for my programs handy, and the usual method is to find the developer site and download the newest version, but when it updates itself, it downloads the new version, then automatically launches it.

I'd like to know where it downloads to so I can just take that file and store it, rather than having to go to the site all and re-download it. I've looked around but can't seem to find any place that it would go, so I assume it's some hidden temp folder or something. I remember on Windows it was some temp folder in the Windows system folder (at least for the Service packs and other WindowsUpdate items).
