I have OSX version 10.6.8. When I run software update, it tells me my software is up to date. On my other Macbook Pro, I have 10.9.4. I realize that I will have to run a series of updates to get from 10.6 to 10.9 but why won't software update allow me to update to the next OS version in the sequence?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI encoded a bunch of anamorphic h264 videos, all done with the same settings and software, and in Quicktime's inspector, some show as "current size: 640 x 480" and others say "current size: 640 x 480 (actual)". Although they all display CORRECTLY, I am worried something went wrong with the PAR on encoding or when setting the current size in Subler (to get comptibility with older devices). What does the "actual" part really mean?

I have a late 2009 i7 and would like to add a 2.5 SSD and retain the current 1TB HD. Is this possible? I don't want to replace the DVD. I have read I would need to short the temperature sensor. Could someone tell me what cable is required? Also do I need a special mount for the OEM HD(3.5?) + SSD? Also another option, have SSD 2.5 and regular HD 2.5 to replace the standard 3.5" OEM HD. I read the logic board only have one SATA port but would like to know if it is possible to use a cable that fits both? Would this affect performance?

I'm a brand new Mac Pro owner and in one weekend I was able to convert more of my collection than I could in weeks with my other mac. It's nuts! I owe a lot of that to this board, and I thank you guys for it. I'm hoping maybe there's a better way to speed up my current process.
Anyways, on to the topic. Right now my steps are:
1. Insert DVD and RipIt takes care of the rest (with a non-riplocked drive). Takes 8-12 minutes per DVD.
2. I'll do a stack of my DVDs then queue up a list with the terminal-updated version of Handbrake.
Each movie takes 25-45 minutes, using only 30% processor power, tops.
3. I usually run two instances of Handbrake to speed up the process. They read the DVD images from my main drive and they write to a second internal drive. Last night I had 15 movies queued up for each Handbrake instance and let it go overnight. All 30 were done by 7:30 this morning (started the process at about midnight).
Going through my entire collection has reminded me of how many bad movies I've bought over the years. There's just some need I have to get my entire collection ready to go on my Apple TV's.
How about you guys? What's your process look like? I'd like to see quicker conversions, but I think I'd need an SSD and better optimized Handbrake to make that happen.
A quick, objective question to the group here.I've been saving my returnable money to replace my 2005 PowerPC. I'm on the bubble, looking at the quad 2.93 and ready to place the order. But I also see that the lifecycle of the current offerings may be coming close to an upgrade, though I don't know what that might be, or when it would drop.I'm not "in desperate need" of an MP right now, nor am I in an OCD frenzy about the latest technology. I'm only looking for any educated advice, or information on what to expect in the MP lineup.

I have a 2.5 year old Macbook. I lightly dropped my powered Iomega 1TB external hard drive about 2 feet down on to carpeted flooring. It didn't come unplugged from the power source or the usb. When I looked at my screen I got the USB Over Current Notice saying the device is drawing too much power and the blue light that use to come on when the usb was plugged in on the external hd is not on either. I have tried multiple restarts with the device in and not in and both fail. I have plugged my phone and WD passport as well (non powered) and they are both fine.
Just wondering if the "Mini DisplayPort to" is the one and only "Mini DisplayPort to" in all of Apple's offerings or if the MP has one, MBP has one, iMac has one etc and anyone needing an adapter has to pick the right one that connects to their Mac or it will not work

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have MacBook Pro about 17 months old (bought new Summer 2008). According to Coconut Battery, my current battery capacity is 96% after 185 cycles (see below). This was taken just after I re-calibrated the battery last night. I usually work the laptop from the battery ... I rarely leave the laptop plugged in unless charging, and when fully charged I always unplug and run the battery down before plugging in again. So, is 96% battery capacity good or bad for a 17 month old MacBook with 185 charge cycles? Is the way I'm charging ok, or is it better to have the MacBook plugged in continuously and have less charge cycles (would this give me a better battery health %)?

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy current dilemma is rather I should sell my NEC 2490 wuxi-bk monitor or sell it and purchase the new Apple 24 LED?
The main intuition on the cinema 24 led are the built in power mag, usb, and display ports on display but that is not to say that my current setup is anything but lackluster.
I wonder if I could flip this neck 2490 wuxi-bk for a good price because I purchase the monitor 5 months ago for $1099 and with this economy, selling a monitor like this could get tedious.
P.S. I am not a designer or photo editor but just enjoy sitting behind a quality panel that is H-IPS and no less.
When I got my new Mac Pro I transferred all my info/settings from my old mac via firewire during the initial bootup. The new Mac then gave me 2 admin accounts which is a real pain. The main account which I never use is totally redundant but obviously I cant get rid of it. The other account which has all my migrated info on it is the one I use. Anyway, when someone on my home network puts something in my drop box/public folder I can never get it. It always goes into the drop box of the account that I don't use. I have to log off and them log into the other account to see the files but then cant copy them into the other one. I tried turning off file sharing in the redundant account but it changes settings in both of them. How can I receive things into the drop box of the one I am using? Surely they are set individually?
