Mac Pro :: Lifecycle Of Current MPs - Quad 2.93

Nov 15, 2009

A quick, objective question to the group here.I've been saving my returnable money to replace my 2005 PowerPC. I'm on the bubble, looking at the quad 2.93 and ready to place the order. But I also see that the lifecycle of the current offerings may be coming close to an upgrade, though I don't know what that might be, or when it would drop.I'm not "in desperate need" of an MP right now, nor am I in an OCD frenzy about the latest technology. I'm only looking for any educated advice, or information on what to expect in the MP lineup.

QuickTime :: Quicktime 10.0 "current Size" Vs "current Size (actual)" Difference?

Mar 22, 2012

I encoded a bunch of anamorphic h264 videos, all done with the same settings and software, and in Quicktime's inspector, some show as "current size: 640 x 480" and others say "current size: 640 x 480 (actual)". Although they all display CORRECTLY, I am worried something went wrong with the PAR on encoding or when setting the current size in Subler (to get comptibility with older devices). What does the "actual" part really mean?

What about installing the drive into a Macpro? Could I just place it in a bay and then run all my programs, like Photoshop, Imageprint, and Office?

Mac Pro :: 2.93 Quad Versus 2.26 Octad

i want the fastest MAC for processing and editing photos for my PHotography business. I use PS and Lightroom at the same time and i need to be able to switch between them quickly and of course go through my photos quickly. So what i think i need is lots of ram and processing power. But my question is do i need extra processors and cores?

according to [URL] it looks like the 2.93 quad has a better overall performance rating but the 2.26 has a better multicore speedup (whatever that is).

PowerPC :: Using Quad G5 Mulitple?

Apr 17, 2009

I just purchased a Quad G5, from the original owner. Original owner, stated, that the machine was in excellent condition, and had not had any problems, nor parts replaced under Apple Care Warranty. Twice today, I had programs crash. 1st crash involved Photoshop CS3 Ext. 2nd Crash, involved FireFox & Photo Mechanic, which then I received a message from within OS X, to restart my tower.

I am quite surprised about the crashes, and do not know what to do, nor expect. Before, I received the G5, the HDD was wiped, with a fresh install of 10.5.6...

I'm also having a Bus Power issue. Before the G5, I had an aluminum keyboard, plugged into my iMac C2D, and I had no problem with Bus power, driving either my Thumb Drive or HDD, but with the Keyboard, hooked to the G5, I'm getting insufficient power warnings
Also, my 23" ACD will not go to sleep. I've got the screen saver set to 3 mins, which does come up, and the time set to 10 mins, for the display to go to sleep. However, when it hits the 10 min threshold, the screen blinks off for a second, then reverts to the active desktop, and the cycle begins again.

Also, with the 23" ACD, I'm seeing, what appears to be a ghosting effect, when I have apps layered on top of each other. It has been occurring with various apps, such as having Photo Mechanic on bottom, then Firefox on top, then Photoshop on top of it.

Mac Pro :: Would An I7 Quad Maxed Out IMac

Oct 28, 2009

I know there had been some discussions here about the new i7 quad, and before I spend my hard earned cash I wanted some last minute opinions.

I post this here in the Mac Pro forums because I figure there might likely be more FCP users...which is what my main use for my new machine will be.

I have been wanting a new unit for several months now, and have been just waiting to pull the trigger on a Mac Pro. In fact, it has gotten to be a running joke around my house with my wife and I...we can be talking about something totally non-related and I will say "I just have one word for you...OCTO!!!" Anyway, I digress.

While I simply cannot justify (or afford really) a maxed out octo, I have been considering a "fairly" maxed out quad MP. But now that the new iMac has appeared, I am having more trouble.

I am not a pro...meaning I am not paying my bills with FCP. I would characterize myself as prosumer...which describing myself really means consumer who likes nicer equipment. I do want a "respectable" machine that will handle FCP with somewhat ease.

My current video set up is an HMC150 mixed with Canon 7D. Converting to ProRes 422 (not the HQ flavor) and using things like Magic Bullet. Not doing much Motion work...mostly because I have not learned that process yet. I am currently doing it on a maxed out 2008 iMac. And so far it has not been all that bad. Ingesting is not taking long enough to bother me really...and editing is nice and smooth. The only really long times are for rendering and encoding to H.264.

So, given these facts, am I way out in left field here considering a maxed out iMac? I am sure that during the process, the render and encode times will be what taxes the machine the most. And I am not even really sure that those times would be much different on a quad MP. Octo, sure. But even then I am not sure what kind of differences we are talking about. I mean would a similarly configured octo have double performance from the quad? Would a 2 hour render or encode on an octo take 4 hours on a quad?

The other thing I am thinking is this...Even if the iMac turns out to be way less than what I would like, I am thinking I can use it for awhile (as long as I can stand it) then maybe down the road look again at the MP...say after the 6 or 12 core thing plays out. I could always use the iMac as the monitor for a MP down the road. The glossy thing is not a factor for me...it doesn't bother me at all.

PowerPC :: Air-cooled My G5 Quad?

Jul 22, 2010

Well I'm kinda basically overhauling my G5 LCS so I figured, why not lets try and put a heatsink from my 1.8ghz G5 onto the quad G5 CPU since I have it out. I only have one CPU in it right now and it's actually doing pretty damn good. I set the Energy prefs to Reduced as a precaution.

If I ditch the LCS and make this a permanent setup, I will have to machine some custom brackets to hold the heatsinks to the logicboard/case. I have the G5 laid on it's side at the moment since there is no way to fasten the 1.8ghz heatsink down.

Below is a screenshot of the temps

This is with a constant 50% load on the CPUs as I just have it folding right now.

Power Mac :: G5 Quad LCS Repair?

Feb 2, 2012

Whilst servicing my LCS I had the misfortune to break the outlet pipe fom processor A's heat transfer block. (For anyone attempting to remove the factory fit tubes DO NOT try pulling them off-cut them above the barbed pipe with snips and then carefully cut them lengthwise with a craft knife and peel them back). I first tried repairing it with super glue  to no avail and then tried araldite rapid which formed a strong bond. I was concerned that any bending moment would break the join so to minimise this I cut a 3mm length of the new clear PVC tube, slid it down to the base of the pipe and liberally coated in more araldite. To further reduce bending I moved it to processor B's slot as the pipe for that is more upright. I filled the system with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. I then spent hours bleeding the system without much success.

Laptops :: Are MBPs Getting Quad Core Soon?

Dec 28, 2009

I've been hearing about this for a while now and Ive read that MBPs should have quad core by February.

I've also read that this isn't going to happen for a little longer. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

I own a PC and would like to switch over (finally) but am concerned about the $400+ premium. My thought is wait until the new quad-core MBPs come out and just get a standard duo-core (hopefully MAC will drop the price a few hundred).

However, I don't want to wait much longer than 2 months. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Mac Pro :: Opinion About 3.2GHz QUAD Vs 17" I7

Aug 25, 2010

I want your opinion guys. I know this is a Mac Pro section and people might be biased but some of you guys own both a Mac Pro and a Macbook Pro. I'm torn and before my 2 week exchange period is over with, I'd like to make a final decision. I keep battling the decision between a 3.2GHz QUAD vs. the 17" i7 Macbook Pro. I already have a samsung netbook that is fast enough (running windows, which is what I need in most cases) that I carry around to and from campus to do all my school work (I dont carry my 17" at all).

I currently use my 17" mbp as a desktop replacement (got a big corner galant desk with a nice nec monitor on an ergotro MX arm) and while it is fast for what I do, I really miss having a powerful desktop. I'm trying to keep myself from owning both the mac pro and the macbook pro as I only need one fast computer. On one end, I'm leaning towards the 3.2GHz Mac Pro as its a beast (never owned anything higher than a 2.8GHz Mac Pro model) and it would zip through everything I throw at it AND I wouldnt need to upgrade for a very long time. But at the same time, I like the portability that I get with the 17" macbook pro with the awesome high resolution display and nice loud speakers. When I DO carry my 17" (to a friends place, or around the house) it feels nice to be away from the desk and it feels like carrying a compact desktop everywhere you go....................

PowerPC :: Graphics Distorted On G5 Quad?

Nov 23, 2010

Well I was swapping some processors around on my G5 when I noticed that I was getting some weird graphical glitches. They went away when I disabled the 3-4 CPUs and made it a dual-core. The glitches are replicable when sizing windows and consistent when different window sizes. I'm starting to wonder if one of my CPUs are faulty...? Everything seems to be running fine otherwise. I attached a pic of the graphic anomaly I'm getting with all 4 core active and it only appears around text and it's always red color.

On a side note I also noticed that 2 of my dimm slots are reporting errors, the two outer banks. I've removed them and it's fine. Gonna load up the diagnostic discs to see if it finds anything.

PowerPC :: Quad G5 CPU Part Number?

Nov 29, 2010

I have had this quad g5 (dualcore 2.5ghz X 2) laying around for about a year that I purchased for $100 without a hard drive, super drive or a power cord. I was told that it was non working in the manner that ONE of the dual core cpu's had gone bad. I will be receiving my power cord this week to make sure that it still powers on but what the problem is.

My question is: If only one of the cpu's are bad, what is the part number I will be looking at? I am not wanting to spend a fortune on this to fix it, but If I do get it working I would like to drop 8-16gb ram in it, and setup a raid with 2 raptors.

Mac Pro :: Can You Upgrade Processors In Quad Core?

Oct 12, 2008

I just ordered a Mac Pro with Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2G of memory, 2 500G hard drives and I am wondering it is possible to upgrade it to 3.2GHz more cost effectively then buying it from apple directly during the purchase of a computer or even post purchase?

Also my unit came with 2 500G HD's, this comp is the lifeline for my webstore, web design and storage for all my personal stuff. So i am wondering if I should just buy 2 more 500G drives for roughly 80-90 a drive(memoryamerica.com) and a Raid Card to back up the first 2 500G drives or just buy a Western Digital 1 or 2 TB external OR buy a 1TB Time capsule.

The sole reason for the external or extra internal drives is in case the first 2 500G drives fail I don't lose any data.

Lastly, I bought the basic ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB card to run two monitors(one for the webstore, one for web design, photoshop and Adium or anything else I would use on the daily). I plan on putting in as BR drive(i know Leopard does not support it) but I was looking to use it for burning BR movies, and if need be run MV(microsoft Vista) to view/copy and burn BR movies(the two screens I am getting are HDCP), i am afraid this card does not support 1080P BR data, does any one know which one will?

I have talked to a Mac Genius and got no real info do to me wanting to use non Apple components IE non apple supplied HD's, memory(buying a 8G memory kit from Memoryamerica.com to reach 10G of memory) and BR drive and Dell Monitors(more cost effective and supports HDCP/BR)....

OS X :: G5 Quad Frequent Kernel Panic

Nov 26, 2008

I recently upgraded to OS 10.5 on two desktops. The PowerMac Intel works fine. The G5 Quad seems to be having weekly kernel panics and frequent software crashes (an example yesterday: Word and Safari were open. After a few minutes of no keyboard input whilst reading a webpage, Word crashed, followed by Safari). Running Maya seems to cause the kernel panics. It did so, once in a while, on OX 10.4, but with 10.5 it's become a frequent occurrence. Calling Apple (still on Applecare) doesn't help. They run some diagnostics and can't pinpoint anything. Clearly if they don't recognize the problem, they can't fix it. (I also run Maya on the PowerMac Intel with no problems, so Maya isn't the problem.)

Realplayer, streaming, has been playing during some of these occurrences — is this a known culprit? Any suggestions? Was the G5 Quad just a bad model? Can I turn off whatever causes the kernel panic alerts that freeze my computer? Should I be demanding more out of Applecare — is there anything I should expect them to replace? Should I downgrade to OS 10.4? If so, how do I do this? Many questions I know...
