OS X :: How To Make Image Of Current HD
Apr 26, 2009
How do I make an image of my current HD, put it on my external, and then restore it on the new HD? Obviously, since the new HD is blank, is there anyway to use the Leopard boot dvd to restore the image to the disk?
If so, what program can I use to make the 1:1 copy of my HD?

I've got a 4 year old iMac. I have a Time Capsule and make daily backups. My question is if, err when, this iMac dies and I spring for a new shiny one, will my backup reconstitute my new machine with my current apps and data, or just the saved data?

I messed up my Itunes today trying to add a second library for my husband's Iphone. Now there are several copies of each folder in Itunes in Finder and I don't know why. My Library has vanished but I can get it under previous libaries. How do I restore it as my current library?

How many others are having issues with their applications opening up much, much slower (example Bento taking a min as compared to seconds before applying the patch) since the last OSX Security Update.

I'm new to OS X and I'm wondering if there is a way to make an image of my hard drive that I can store somewhere. That way when if I ever need to reinstall OS X if my HD dies or something, I can just load the image that I have saved. I've done this with a PC before using Acronis and Ghost but I'm not sure how to do this for a mac..

I tried the following to make a bootable floppy image and it would not even read in a virtual machine. I have Oracle Virtualbox. I am using a Mac Mini 2011 with 4GB of RAM. I have tried making a blank floppy and copying to it by dragging and using the Terminal, but neither works. Here are the cmds I used:Â
dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024 count=1440>floppy.imgÂ
Then I mounted and erased the image file in Disk Utility.Â
cp -Rpv /Volumes/Untitled/ /Volumes/UNTITLED 1/Â
The above command copied all the files from the floppy to the image but the image wouldn't read on the virtual machine.Â

I finally get to open my first iMac in a few days and the excitement is killing me. So I decided to sign up for one of the workshops at the local Apple store. The girl told the group that Time Machine would make a perfect mirrored image of the hard drive in case of catastrophic failure. I asked her if this image was a boot-able clone and she said yes.

I am looking for a nice tidy option to create an image of a "master" client and distribute to a group of student Macbooks. All the Macbooks are the same model and are all running Snow Leopard (though they were released with Leopard). Initially, one of the teachers created a user account (called student) with all the software and settings that we needed, on one of them and used Migration Assistant to copy that account to the others.Â
I prefer to have a master image I can restore to at any time. I figure that Disk Utility will do the job - I'm just not 100% sure of which steps to take. So far I have created my "master" macbook that is set up just the way I want it. Next I was going to attach it to the mac I use to run everything on (ARD etc) via firewire and boot the master in Target mode. Then I would run Disk Utility on my mac and use the New Image button to create an image called "studentPOD.dmg" (There is room on my mac for this, or I can put it on an external USB disk) Is this correct, and once I have the image, how do I get it onto the other Macbooks? Is there anything special I have to do to make it bootable? They all part of a student POD and can be re-imaged at anytime without worrying about losing data...so I can afford to experiment...Â

Figured it would be a little lighter to have a thread that shows that Apple's computer CAN and DO work occasionally....Here's my uptime on my i7! It wants me to reboot for Safari update, but I refuse. As of 8:42am PST, March 16, 2010:I guess currently I have the longest uptime of anyone in this thread!

Safari used to let me drag an image from a webpage to the finder and have the dragged file be saved as an actual image but now all that's saved is a webloc file. I want the image saved, not a reference to the image's URL - do I now have to always use "save as" to save it?Â
I can understand Safari creating a webloc file if I dragged the site icon from the location bar to the finder, but to make the default behavior for dragging things that are parts of a page (not the page itself) as webloc files seems like a HUGE step backwards for usability.Â
Does anyone know if there's, say, a key to hold when dragging to avoid saving a webloc file or a defaults command or something to make Safari revert back to sane draging behavior?

One software says I cannot upload an image because the image or the container folder does not have permission. Indeed there is one "unknown" in permissions, that I cannot get to a read write no matter how hard I try -- both on the folder, the desktop, and the file (this is all on my laptop)Â I've done a repair permission.

When a user copies an image from a browser into PowerPoint 2011 he gets text of a link back to the image, not the image itself. But if he copies from a browser into Word he gets the image, and can then copy the image from Word to PowerPoint. Same results with both Firefox and Safari. Behavior is new so I assume it relates to recent software updates but user does not recall accepting any.

I have my PowerBook G4 connected to a Hitachi video projector, using a DVI to VGA adapter.
The problem is that the only projected image I can see is that of my Desktop image. It doesn't display the Dock, menus or any windows.
What settings do I need to change?

I recently right clicked a picture to set it as my desktop picture but didn't have the foresight to save the picture in case I wanted to change it later. I still have the picture up but I cannot find where the picture is stored so I can save it for later. I checked HD/Library/desktop pictures but no luck. Does anyone know where these pictures are saved?

Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:
1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

I need a transparent hand print (different colors also) for a project. I've gotten a hand print and used a guide to try and make it transparent using Gimp but I can never export it.
I just need a simple program (I have Paintbrush, Gimp, etc) in order to make things transparent!

I encoded a bunch of anamorphic h264 videos, all done with the same settings and software, and in Quicktime's inspector, some show as "current size: 640 x 480" and others say "current size: 640 x 480 (actual)". Although they all display CORRECTLY, I am worried something went wrong with the PAR on encoding or when setting the current size in Subler (to get comptibility with older devices). What does the "actual" part really mean?

I have a late 2009 i7 and would like to add a 2.5 SSD and retain the current 1TB HD. Is this possible? I don't want to replace the DVD. I have read I would need to short the temperature sensor. Could someone tell me what cable is required? Also do I need a special mount for the OEM HD(3.5?) + SSD? Also another option, have SSD 2.5 and regular HD 2.5 to replace the standard 3.5" OEM HD. I read the logic board only have one SATA port but would like to know if it is possible to use a cable that fits both? Would this affect performance?

I'm a brand new Mac Pro owner and in one weekend I was able to convert more of my collection than I could in weeks with my other mac. It's nuts! I owe a lot of that to this board, and I thank you guys for it. I'm hoping maybe there's a better way to speed up my current process.
Anyways, on to the topic. Right now my steps are:
1. Insert DVD and RipIt takes care of the rest (with a non-riplocked drive). Takes 8-12 minutes per DVD.
2. I'll do a stack of my DVDs then queue up a list with the terminal-updated version of Handbrake.
Each movie takes 25-45 minutes, using only 30% processor power, tops.
3. I usually run two instances of Handbrake to speed up the process. They read the DVD images from my main drive and they write to a second internal drive. Last night I had 15 movies queued up for each Handbrake instance and let it go overnight. All 30 were done by 7:30 this morning (started the process at about midnight).
Going through my entire collection has reminded me of how many bad movies I've bought over the years. There's just some need I have to get my entire collection ready to go on my Apple TV's.
How about you guys? What's your process look like? I'd like to see quicker conversions, but I think I'd need an SSD and better optimized Handbrake to make that happen.

A quick, objective question to the group here.I've been saving my returnable money to replace my 2005 PowerPC. I'm on the bubble, looking at the quad 2.93 and ready to place the order. But I also see that the lifecycle of the current offerings may be coming close to an upgrade, though I don't know what that might be, or when it would drop.I'm not "in desperate need" of an MP right now, nor am I in an OCD frenzy about the latest technology. I'm only looking for any educated advice, or information on what to expect in the MP lineup.
