Mac Pro :: Swap My Current SSD Into New System

Apr 27, 2010

I have a 2,1 macpro that I am considering for an upgrade when the 2010 models come out. I am currently booting with an Intel G2 SSD that I would like to swap directly into the new box. I dont want to wipe and reformat it.I have done this successfully with PC/motherboard upgrades. Not sure if it will work with OSX. Will I need to make sure I have the video card driver installed, as that will be likely be different? Or are all the necessary drivers in the OSX installation?

Software :: Quick Swap Out Of Operating System?

Jun 27, 2008

I've installed a program that has corrupted some parts of my operating system (trust me, it is broken and broken good). I've done all of the usual fix-its and nothing works.

I do not want to "re install" the whole operating system using the install DVD. I have a perfectly good installation of the operating system sitting on an external firewire drive - my emergency drive. That external drive boots up, no problems. It contains all of my third party system extensions and whatnot already installed on it on the system level and ready to go.

I want to copy that operating system over from the external drive to my internal drive. I don't need or want to copy user accounts, applications, or anything else. Just the operating system, and only the operating system. The whole operating system, intact, functioning, and ready to boot. Hopefully, all in one go.

I'm familiar with asr from the terminal, but that wipes the whole drive (this is bad) and copies everything (also bad). Which is of course exactly what I do not want to happen. Unless there are some additional commands for asr?

For example, in the days of old, you could simply delete the System Folder, and then drag a fresh one over. Bless it, then it works. Simple. No if's, and's, or but's. No kinda's, sorta's or maybe's. It just worked. I need to accomplish this same feat but with OSX now, somehow.

OS X :: Function Hot Key - Make Swap Instead Of Having To Open Up System Preferences

Nov 7, 2010

I know how in keyboard preferences to mark the check box that says "Use function keys as standard function keys," but my question is, is there a way to use a hot key to make this swap instead of having to open up system preferences, navigate to the proper pane and tab, and click the box? I have a couple programs where I absolutely need function keys to be function keys, but for general purpose use, I need the function keys to be the spiffy stuff printed on them.

Ideally I'd love for the system to look at what app was in the foreground (that is, has control of the menu bar) and recognize this app as needing access to function-function keys and make the swap for me, but I don't think this is possible at the moment, and having a hot key to change it would be the next best thing.

MacBook Pro :: Swap The Graphics System Without An Administrator Password?

Apr 10, 2012

I have a mid-2009, 2.66 GHz MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,3). The computer has dual graphics chipsets, an NVidia 9400m and 9600M GT, both with 256 MB of VRAM. To change between the two, the user must select which one he or she wants to use. However, that user must have administrator privileges.

I am not the administrator. Is there a way I can have the graphics system permanently set to the higher-performance chipset, because the system seems to automatically default to the 9400m. It is annoying to contact my administrator every time I need to run a high performance game or aggressively use SketchUp, Final Cut, etc.

Mac Pro :: Potential Features Would Blow Current System Away?

Apr 16, 2010

I am tempted to jump on getting a new Mac Pro now instead of waiting. Primarily because i dont want to be priced out of getting the higher end model with more cores. If they do come out with a 6 and 12 core config. i would want to buy the 12 core but a lot of rumors around here and on other sites say that the new models will likely come with a price increase. potentially leaving me having to buy the 6 core model. 8 core current Vs 6 core future This makes me think i'll just get the 8 core current. BUT Are there any features that apple may add that would blow the current models away. USB 3.0, BluRay, etc. I can live without many of these things.. but perhaps i am missing something.

MacBook Pro :: Clinging Sound From System / Low Voltage Current When Touch Aluminum Unibody

Oct 6, 2010

I finally put my hands on a brand new MacBook Pro 15" (base model) with Hi-Def Glossy Screen...I'm playing with it since a couple of days and I wonder if it is somehow defective...I've already passed through the following thread but I haven't found the answers I'm looking for....URL

I've also searched trough the forum, found a couple of related threads but no conclusive answers were given, so that's why I'm posting my doubts and asking for you to comment or give your personal experiences or advices...

1) Power dazzle (sorry I don't know how to better express it)
When I plug the cable to recharge the battery and the battery gets finally completely recharged, I feel a sort of low voltage through my hands when I touch the aluminum unibody... I was used to feel the same thing on the touchpad of my former pc when its logic board started to break... (that's why I'm so worried about this potential issue)Is it normal? Do you experience the same thing? Is it to notify the battery is fully charged? I don't think so: a pop-up message would be much more effective...

2) Clinging sound
When I use the MBP in a quiet room, I often hear a clinging sound from the touchpad... I suspect it is the HDD's head that moves to perform an operation... or is it something completely different? In any case, it is very annoying: when I hear it, I immediately start to search myself for any tab of a zipper that may produce it...Again, is it normal? Does your MBP is the same? Does it annoy you? Am I simply paranoid? Did you do something to effectively reduce it (SSD)?

3) Battery life
I tried to calibrate the battery properly, nevertheless I didn't experienced the advertized battery life... I think it depends on the fact I have the Hi-Def screen that is more power demanding than the default one...

Is this the effective reason? How long does your battery last? (I cannot post my value because I just discovered the option to show time besides battery icon...) Any suggestion to make the battery last longer? (I already use cable rather than wi-fi and Intel graphic card rather than Nvidia one)

4) If I move my finger tips on the bottom of the unibody enclosure, I can feel a small step between the enclosure and the cover (something less than 1/3 of a mm) in the area below the touchpad that progressively disappear toward the hinge area...

Does your cover integrate seamlessly into your unibody enclosure or not?Is it an indication of some sort of refurbished intervention or is it normal this way? How can I understand if it is a refurbished MBP or a brand new one? (It's been bought by my university, so I don't know exactly what has been ordered... there is something I have to look for to understand the case? A particular notice, booklet or something like that?)

Mac Pro :: Possible To Swap HDD To A Newer Generation Mp?

Apr 20, 2009

I have a first generation mac pro (Rev B I believe), and am currently having some issues with it.

If I decide to purchase a newer generation mac pro, would it be possible to jsut pull my current hard drive, put it in the new one, and have it work? I'm a photographer and work with Photoshop CS3, a 2001 version of Word:Mac and Excel:Mac, Photo Mechanic 4.51 and Transmit and Toast Titanium as the main programs I use. I can not presently find any of these install disks, so I'd like to try avoiding re-installing the software if I can avoid it.

The economy being what it is, I am trying to save money where I can...but I need my workstation to work. Right now I am already looking at replacing the Vid Card in my 1st gen mac pro, and hate thinking that purchasing another $350 ATI X1900 card from Apple is my best option. If a newer generation mac pro is better for me in the long run, it might be $2k well spent.

MacBook Pro :: Crashed Hdd During Swap?

Jul 22, 2009

I had an Apple "Genius" swap a hard drive from a MacBook 13" to a MacBook Pro 13". When I got it back, the hard drive was unreadable. The "Genius" said that he did nothing wrong and the problem was that the Hitachi hard drive from the MacBook was incompatible with the new MacBook Pro. My original MacBook was purchased in May 2009 and exchanged for the MacBook Pro in July 2009. When I booted the MacBook Pro from the installer disk, and launched Disk Utilities, my internal hard drive was blank/unformatted. How could the Genius destroy my hard drive just by swapping from one MacBook to another?

OS X :: UMBP Wacked Out After HDD Swap

Jan 27, 2010

I recently replaced the harddrive in my unibody 15" MBP. It's been acting a little strangely but the harddrive seems to be working mostly fine. Firstly, each time I start up the computer I am greeted with about 10 or 15 of these messages, and I have no idea what they mean or how to make them go away. Secondly, my iPhone is not recognised in iTunes when I plug it in. I've tried with different cords, different ports, with and without the dock, and have restarted both the computer and the phone, but to no avail. It is recognised on other computers, and shows up in System Profiler (see pic) but iTunes doesn't show any sign of it being there. Though when I plug it in, the phone does make the usual sounds and shows the charging symbol. What could "Current Required (mA): Unknown (Device has not been configured)" in System Profiler mean? Thirdly, I just restarted my laptop and now I can't use 3 or 4 finger gestures. Any fixes?
EDIT: just restarted again and gestures are working. What on earth is going on? I do still have my old harddrive sitting in an enclosure. I havent cleared it yet because I thought I may run into problems like this.

MacBook Pro :: Swap Harddrives Between Two?

Feb 12, 2012

I own a Macbook Pro 15' (early 2011) and my wife has a 17' MBP (Late 2011). She's about to go on an extended trip, and so we've talked about swapping laptops, as mine is a little more beat up already, is lighter and has a resolution that she prefers (1680 vs 1920). We've both got the high-end machines with upgraded GPUs (6750 and 6770).

To accomplish the swap, would it be possible and or advisable to simply swap harddrives between the machines? Are there any troubles that I might run into from doing this? We both have bootcamp partitions for gaming.

MacBook Pro :: Use SWAP Memory When RAM Is Available

The Activity Monitor shows 7.2GB Physical Memory usedBut, it also shows virtual memory used 9GB and, SWAP memory used 38MB

This usually happens towards the end of the day and during this time, I can also hear the processor sound as if there is too much of load / processing going on.

The system also responds very slowly. So far, I haven't experienced any system hang up issues but would like to know about the resolution before I start experiencing the system hang up and other issues.
