OS X :: Dropped External HDD Now Getting USB Over Current Notice
Sep 26, 2010
I've searched through the forum and found similar errors but couldn't find a similar match to my problem.
I have a 2.5 year old Macbook. I lightly dropped my powered Iomega 1TB external hard drive about 2 feet down on to carpeted flooring. It didn't come unplugged from the power source or the usb. When I looked at my screen I got the USB Over Current Notice saying the device is drawing too much power and the blue light that use to come on when the usb was plugged in on the external hd is not on either. I have tried multiple restarts with the device in and not in and both fail. I have plugged my phone and WD passport as well (non powered) and they are both fine.

I have a 2.2 ghz Macbook, and whenever I plug in the USB connected to my iPod into the side USB ports, I get this "USB Over Current Notice" and it deactivates the USB Hub. It doesn't do it every time, but it does it more often than not. It will do it on both USB ports.I don't think it's a prob w/ my iPod b/c the connection was fine on my old computer. Any way I can fix this? Should I spend the $ on a Genius appt?

Figured it would be a little lighter to have a thread that shows that Apple's computer CAN and DO work occasionally....Here's my uptime on my i7! It wants me to reboot for Safari update, but I refuse. As of 8:42am PST, March 16, 2010:I guess currently I have the longest uptime of anyone in this thread!

I'm running OS X 10.6 on mid 2010 MBP. Got bullseye notice to update a game app the other day, but update requires OS X 7 so I can't update. I've still got the irritating bullseye however. I deleted the app (didn't play it much anyway) but I've still got the notice.

I have started to get an annoying Terminal window showing up when I boot up my Mac.A command of some cription needs to be completed before I can quit Terminal and allow the startup process to continue.
I have no idea what this command is about because I do not understand Java but it slows everything down and I'd just love to get rid of it.I don't think it is anything important and most likely just a simple bit of script will do the job.

Every time I restart (close and reopen) Safari, I receive a pop-up stating "Your Safari extensions have been migrated."
When I look my my extensions in Safari Preferences, they have all been disabled... (and most aren't even there!)
I will re-enable the extensions, and everything is good... until I close/exit Safari and open it again, when I receive the migration pop-up and have to start all over again.
I am running Safari 8.0 and OS 10.10.1

A weird thing is happening with Mail.app. I'm on a PPC Mac with 10.4.11. Every time I go to a folder other than Inbox and then return to the Inbox there is a couple of emails threaded together with the subject line: Fwd: Delivery Notice Status (Failure) If I click on one of these emails, the email is blank including no headers showing up at all. Again, the emails only appear if I go to another mailbox folder and return to the Inbox. They do not appear if I stay in the Inbox.

i have been having some problems with a JMicron 0x2329 usb enclosure, on a new iMac. Sometimes it suddenly unmounts, giving the "improper ejection" warning. To which i usually reply out loud- "No i'm pretty sure i didn't- you did." It doesn't make any difference, it refuses to take responsibility for it's actions.
I guess the first thing is... is it the computer, the enclosure, or both? It's not the cable. It's not the directory, diskwarrior gave it the green light, and i optimized it anyway.disk utility finds no problemsInside is a hitachi 1TB, hfs journaled drive1 partitionI've stopped and started journalingI've turned off ownership. It's been plugged into the computer, and a powered hub. It's intermittent (it appears that way anyway) the computer is as follows:
Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac12,2 Processor Name: Intel Core i5 Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 4 GB Boot ROM

So, yesterday I moved my wife's iPhoto library to her WD external HD so she could install Snow Leopard on her iMac. Today I get home and she meets me in the driveway telling me that her HD fell of her filing cabinet and the computer won't recognize it. I take a look at it and here's the message I get when I plug it into the computer: <Red Stop Sign w/ "!" in the middle>
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. (Initialize...) (Ignore) (Eject). I am hesitant to click the (Initialize) button for fear of an accidental formatting which would subsequently erase our iPhoto library (ALL OF OUR PHOTOS -> 90GB of photos). Because Mac enthusiasts are the ultimate community and are very resourceful on the whole, I felt it would be most prudent to put this query to the monitors of these boards.

I've got my mom's Gateway Quad-Core desktop PC (running Windows 7) hooked up at my house for the time being. I have an Airport Extreme as my router, and also an Airport Express used as a network extender. I hooked up the Airport Express this morning, and that's all configured correctly and working properly (so it's not an out-of-range issue). The Gateway Desktop has a full 5-bar connection, and is running a USB D-Link DWA-140 wireless network adapter. The problem is that it cuts the connection literally about every 30 seconds.
Here's what I've done so far:
1) Installed the updated D-link drivers. Didn't work.
2) Installed the NEWER, updated Ralink drivers (parent company for D-link...the DWA-140 adapter has the RT-2870 inside, so I used the appropriate driver, which I thought surely would fix it...that's what everyone told me to do thus far). Didn't work.
3) Checked my USB Power Settings in control panel and set them to never put the ports to sleep. Rebooted. Didn't work.
4) Right-clicked the adapter under "devices" and checked the power management settings. Set them to "maximum performance" (that's all I could do).

I was a trouble. Dropped today to 1.5 meters and the bent angle of the laptop. The laptop was in a protective case! But the consequences were still. Here you have a solidaluminum body Now the question: is it possible to somehow at home to fix the problem?Something like sandpaper, but not to make things worse.

I was going on vacation and dropped my mid-2009 MacBookPro (Model Number: A1297) at security. It fell off of the conveyor belt down onto the ground. It was powered off, and there is no visible external damage other than a dent in the back cover. It loads to the main FileVault screen where I choose the user, I put in the password, and it accepts it. Then it shows the Apple logo with a spinning loading sign in the middle. But it is stuck on that screen and won't go any further. There is no clicking noise coming from it, and it doesn't power off unless I hold down the power button.
Is it the hard drive? If so, is there anyway to move files from this hard drive to a new one, or is it, and its contents, lost?

I have a Mac Mini, it is hooked to a D-link router with a 50ft ethernet cable. I have never had problems in the past using my MacBook over wifi, but it seems like I am constantly losing my Internet connection on the Mac Mini. I have no problems when I am on it, but if I leave a download going, then come back, it seems to almost always pause or cancel the download. It has happened downloading songs from Napster through Safari, it happens in iTunes, and in Software Update.
OSX should not go to sleep if it's downloading a file, right? I even installed Caffeine to make sure it stays awake. Any ideas on what the issue might be? Or what I should try to do to figure it out?

I'm running a macbook pro with tiger OSX. I wanted to transfer a folder of pictures into another one (around 3000 pictures, I'm not very organized and want to start) so I selected all the pictures and went to drag them into a new folder. I missed at put them to the desktop...
My desktop started rapidly filling up with pictures and even when I clicked the X to stop the transfer it kept going. My computer froze up and I powered it down. Once I turned it back on my desktop stayed blank. No Mac harddrive, no pictures, it's running really slowly and I cannot click anything from the top bar (finder, file, folder etc...)
I clicked the shortcut to go to change the desktop background and when I highlight the folder "desktop" all of my pictures show up in a massive list and I can change my desktop background to any one of them!
So my question here is is there any way I can restore my computer to a day ago (like on a pc) so I can go back and try again?
Or, since I am seeing them in this folder and its showing they are on my desktop (even though I can't see them) is there a shortcut I can press to open up my harddrive so I can see all of the files apparently on the desktop and then just transfer them into a folder?
All I can do at this point is run applications from my dock and I can't access anything!

Battery life on my MacBook Air (1.86/SSD) has dropped to less than two hours (for casual web browsing). When new, I got more than 4 hours on a full charge. Also, the battery meter seems to be way off.The machine shuts off with the meter showing 40% remaining. I've tried several full charge - discharge cycles.System information shows battery health to be good.

My wife dropped her powerbook on the carpeted floor. It fell flat and not on a corner or anything. We did not think it was too bad of a fall. However, the laptop will now not power up. The screen remains dark, no chimes. The hard drive sounds like it wants to power up but doesn't. I suspect it is a hard drive issue, but is there a way to confirm prior to opening it up? I have replaced the drive before so I know I can do it again.

I can't get it to turn on even if it did the screen would be messed up. It had an SSD rev C will that work in a base refurb rev b or does it look like the rev D will support the same 1.8 hard drive? I can hold out a while on a G3 but I hope they update soon! It's ironic that my MBA is what I use to edit video and game to an extent so I really don't want to go back to 1.6ghz unless I have to.

I fell asleep last night next to my computer. It was on and the lid was open, and it fell about 2 feet onto my carpet and landed on the back of the screen. I have a case on it and there aren't any scratches or dents. It did make a little noise coming from the right side when I first tried to use it again, and when I restarted it, it would not start up by itself. But! I tried to restart again and then it did work.
I checked Disk Utility and the hard drive "appears to be OK." I checked TechTool Deluxe and everything passed. I'm doing the (long and arduous) Surface Scan now. It's over a quarter of the way done and there are 0 errors.
The ONLY problem is that the superdrive seems to be out of whack. When I inserted a CD, the CD felt like it was hitting something. I had to maneuver the CD in order to get it passed whatever it was hitting. After I did this, it was able to go in all the way and the computer naturally tried to "grab" it, but I didn't allow that because I don't want it to get stuck when trying to eject.
Does it sound like something might have popped out of place? I have absolutely no experience with taking apart computers. I know iFixit has tutorials on how to do this, but I just want to know if it's necessary. Any advice on what to do, computer experts?

I have a new Mac Mini and it's connects to the internet via Wifi with no issues and the internet works fine. After it's been connected for awhile I'll pull up Safari and it won't load a page but shows that it's connected. If I disable the Wifi and re enable it, it'll pull up the webpage with no problem. All other devices connect and hold the connection but the Mini including Win 7 systems and Android devices.

Yesterday my MBP was accidentally dropped on the ground. It landed on the front left side, making a small dent (right beside the power light button). As far as I can tell, the computer seems to be functioning properly, except now there are 2 main issues:
1) The shell is slightly bent so that the computer doesn't sit straight (and wobbles).
2) There is a small, randomly occurring metal clicking sound coming from the computer; it's very irritating. I can't be sure, but it seems to be coming from the right side.
what is causing the clicking sound, and if it can be fixed? This computer is only 2 months old and is still under warranty; do you think the warranty would cover this sort of damage given the accidental nature of it?
