OS X :: Unable To Startup MacBook?
Jun 2, 2009My 2yo MacBook won't start. When I press the power button it starts to boot but stalls on the blank, sky blue screen and won't proceed to the desktop. Any ideas?!

Jun 28, 2012The gear wheel keeps spinning but nothing happens. I tried to start on safe mode but didn't help. I also tried rebooting holding the control/alt/P/R combination...but still the same thing.I have not backed up in a couple of weeks and ALL my work is in there!

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Boot System / Grey Screen Of Death At Startup
Oct 1, 2010The other day my 1st gen MBP functioned without any probs, until it suddenly powered down. After I removed the question marks from my eyes, I offcourse tried to reboot it.
But it never makes it beyond the grey screen, sometimes untill the apple logo, sometimes not even that far.
Offcours I googled around first to gather some info before I decided to put this problem down on this board. I found this could be a HDD failure, but in those cases, with other people, it could be powered holding apple + s, and doing some checks that way.
Mine doesn't even come that far
I have a second hand 1st gen MBP with upgraded HDD and RAM, snow leopard, and coincidently since last week no more battery... so i may have powered down a completely unprepared mac by tripping over the wire, once or twice...

Oct 26, 2010I tried to on my mac this morning and just like usual, the "chime" when off and the gray screen with the apple logo came out together with the spinning gear.
However today, it took longer than usual on the spinning gear and my mac osx did not startup and my mac switched off automatically.

Mac Pro :: Unable To Work With Startup / Sending Error
May 2, 2009Lately (started this morning), I've been getting some weird startup problems during startup. When pressing the start button, the fans spin to the max endlessly, most of the time the screen stays black without the Apple chime and computer doesn't start. After three times of shutting it down, it usually starts but performance isn't quite the same and i immediately get this error.

Aug 26, 2009I am trying to load a clean valid copy of OSX on my older clamshell. It will take up to 10.3 and that is what I'm using. I keep getting this error " Startup Disc was unable to select the install CD as the startup disc" error (-2). This occurs after the software requests restart to start the process.

Apr 21, 2010Yesterday I was helping someone getting to know their MacBook Pro (early 2008, Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz, Mac OS X 10.5.2). I installed Perian and Flip4Mac and Firefox 3.6. I also checked for updates because she's on a very old version. I tried downloading the updates, but because we had a very bad internet connection I stopped the download quite early on and told her to do it at home. However after I left she tried to shut down the computer but it hanged. She manually shut it down using the power button. When she tried to turn it on again she got a kernel panic message saying she should reboot. This however didn't work.
Now I've tried all sorts of things. I've removed Perian and Flip4Mac manually. I did a disk verification (all was well) and a permissions verification and repair. I tried booting in safe mode (still won't boot) clearing the SMC and resetting PRAM, none of it worked. I just wanted to check here first before either taking it to an Apple store or reinstalling Mac OS X. I've read on forums about hardware failing (RAM mostly). No idea if that's the case. I tried a hardware test, but I don't have her DVDs and used my own with version 10.5.5. The Standard test said it was all ok, but the extended test seemed to hang. I could ask for her own DVDs which I will need anyway if I'm going to reinstall Mac OS X.

when i power my macbook on, in login window,there'are empty Username and Password which is i have to fill. when i type my username and password , i can't access small letter which i used exactly when i set U n Password the first time i used my mac (eg.. username-dearmac, pw - loveyou).
my mac show only Cap Letter (DEARMAC...)... is it normal?
isn't supposed to be able to acces Small Letter as well. if so ... how can access that?
i turned off Caps Lock already. playing Caps Lock doesn't make any changes. it's always come out with Cap Letter....
Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp 3.0 - Unable To Load At Startup
Oct 20, 2009when I went to restart the computer so those updates would take effect, during the start up process, all I continually see is the Windows XP scrolling status bar, I shrugged figuring it had a bit to do and left it to its own devices, and a half hour later returned to see the same scrolling progress screen. (before choosing which account to log into for windows).

Nov 11, 2008My iBook G4 (see sig below) has an intermittent problem. It usually sits on my desk, plugged into the power adaptor, always on. The only time I ever do a shutdown is when I'm taking it with me to the airport. Here's where the problem happens -- WHEN it happens. I start it up and one of two things happens:
1. I get the old question mark disk icon, or
2. I get a plain grey screen
Sometimes, if I do a manual force reboot (cmd-ctrl-power) several times in a row, it will finally boot correctly. The lovely grey Apple logo shows up, and all is well.Other times, when that fails, I boot from a DiskWarrior CD. Sometimes it can't see the internal HD. Other times it sees it, and when I run DW, it does find errors to fix. Yet other times, DW sees it, and finds NO errors.
When the iBook is working, the internal HD's SMART status shows as Good.So, whatup with this? Is the drive actually going bad (SMART status notwithstanding), or is it maybe the controller or some other logic board component? I could chuck the iBook and get a nice new MacBook, but this 2004 antique still suits my needs.
P.S. BTW, the internal HD backs up to an external FW drive daily, so there will be minimum heartache if/when the thing totally bites it.

Nov 6, 2010Hi, just wondering if anyone could give me some diagnostic tips with a very unhappy powerbook. I�ve tried the Apple support pages, but they didn�t do the job so I thought I�d look for some helpful experts � I will be immensely grateful if you could help me figure out what�s wrong.
It�s a G4 Power book, running OS 10.4. It suddenly froze on me one day, so I held down the power button to reboot and it hasn�t worked since. One thing that I guess could be relevant is that it was pretty much out of disc space � it had flashed up the warning a few times in recent days and I was in progress of doing a clean up when it went.
What I�ve tried so far:
Normal power up:
Result: Chime, apple logo and spinning logo appear. Stays that way for 4 mins, until screen goes darker grey and �You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.� message appears.
Safe boot (with progress status) � power up holding shift-command-v:
Result: Chime, apple logo appears, nothing else. Stays like this for ~30 mins until I give up and power down.Reseting PRAM and NVRAM � power up holding command-option-p-r
Result: Chime, then restarts and second chime, then does exactly the same as the normal power up.
Next step recommended by the Apple Support site is to start directly from the OSX installation disc � but my powerbook already has a CD inserted which I am unable to eject.
Any tips � how can I eject? Could the safe reboot take more than 30 mins (bearing in mind it didn�t give me any progress indication)? Anything else I should try?

Oct 29, 2008so i have my two disks to redo the hard drive so i did that and i wanted the hard drive erased so i chose that option i put the first disk in it checked the disk then installed then asked for the second disk...no checking just an error message that i should check the disk and the internet connection ok well internet is fine checked the disk called apple and verified that i had the right disk and not my imac one.....im lost and kinda need my laptop i have a leopard disk i tryed - put it in turned the computer off turned it back on pressing c installed it and after it said sucsessful instalation we need to restart bam the restart page was please insert disk 2 for the sake of trying again i did ta da error message -sigh-

OS X :: Unable To Remove Time Machine Partition / This Startup Disk Is Not Supported
Sep 22, 2010I had my hard drive partitioned via bootcamp to run windows vista. I use software at work that isn't supported by Mac (it is now, but our version is old and it costs 10k to upgrade yada yada yada). One night I was playing around with the time machine feature (had the macbook for three years now never touched it, wish i hadn't) and accidentally told the time machine to use the partition made by bootcamp for windows to back up my mac. Well this messed everything up. Now that partition is gone (windows) and that volume is now called time machine backups. I have used some threads in here to try and remove that and nothing seems to work (most of the threads are from 2007 to 2008).
What I need help with is removing that time machine volume so that I can run bootcamp again to reinstall windows. When I attempt to run bootcamp right now it says "This startup disk is not supported." When I restart and hold option only the mac hd is available to choose. I also use(d) VMware Fusion to run Windows.
OS X :: Unable To Boot System / Grey Screen With Apple Logo At Startup
Jan 12, 2011I own an iBook G4. I could not get it to boot up, it would just go to a grey screen with the apple symbol and a timer/clock that looked like a gear.FYI: I may provide more information than necessary in the text below. I'm not sure what is and isn't relevant.
Following some advice I found in this forum I got out my old OS disks to boot from the disc instead of the hard drive. I intended to archive the old hard drive and install my latest OS (10.4.6 on the disc, 10.4.11 was the version I had been running on the machine, I believe). The machine told me it needed 4.5 Gb to install 10.4.6 Tiger, but I only had 4.0 Gb left on the hard drive. So instead, I archived and installed with the OS that came with the computer originally, 10.3.4.
I got things going, did the archive and install, and got to the log in screen. Unfortunately, I could not remember the password, so I booted up in single user mode, and entered the following to get into the machine:
1. mount -uw /
2. rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
3. shutdown -h now
This got me in with a new admin login, and I started up in 10.3.4. I soon noticed that I could still see all of the files that I put on the hard drive on my old operating system. I thought I shouldn't be able to see them, but since I could I decided to try to copy them to an external hard drive. When I did, I got an error message saying that there was a read/write error. I was not entirely surprised, but I decided it was time to turn back to the forums for help.
What I want to do is copy everything from my old hard drive onto an external hard drive, make room on the iBook hard drive to reinstall my latest operating system (10.4.6). Once I've done that I'd like to get the essential files back onto the iBook from the external hard drive and continue using my computer (even though it is a dinosaur).
Intel Mac :: Unable To Reinstall Snow Leopard From Broken Folder Startup Screen
May 16, 2012I turned my 2011 iMac on this morning but it never loaded past the startup screen. Eventually the Apple icon which is usually displayed on the screen turned into the broken folder symbol. I read some articles on how to fix this and tried resetting the NVRAM and PRAM, but that didn't work. I was going to try reinstalling OS X next, but putting the disc into the driver doesn't appear to do anything, and now I can't eject it.

Laptops :: Unable To Complete Startup / Grey Screen With Apple And Spinning Wheel Appears
Jul 24, 2010Hi all, I have two Powerbook G4 laptops. Both have very similar problems. When I try to start up, the grey screen with the apple and spinning wheel appears, but I can't get beyond that. If I walk away for an hour, when I come back there will still be a grey screen with apple and spinning wheel.
I admit I know little about this sort of thing, so I began poking around online for solutions. I tried Tech Tool Deluxe. Inserted the disk and held down "C," but again it never progressed beyond the grey screen with apple and spinning wheel. Most frustrating. Is there any other way of running the disk with the laptop?
Entering the terminal yielded slightly different results on each machine.
Powerbook #1: Once in terminal I typed...
/sbin/fsck -fy
...response was...

...tried /sbin/fsck -fy over and over, always received the same results.
Powerbook #2: Once in terminal, this appears...

...and it won't even let me type /sbin/fsck -fy.
I tried plugging both latops into my desktop in target mode. In both cases the target icon appeared on the laptop screen but the hard drive icon never appeared on the desktop screen. I would love to at least retrieve a few files off each machine, if nothing else.
MacBook Pro :: Startup Screen Is Zoomed In On Startup?
Jun 19, 20126 month old MBP 15", been running 100% fine, plugged it into a projector the other day and it auto changed the screen resolution. I unplugged the device, went into settings and changed my screen resolution back to it's factory size as well as command & the minus key to make sure I wasn't zoomed in on anything.
I then did a system update for the following; Airport utility, Safari, Ricoh Printer, Digital Camera Raw, java, Itunes.
Restarted the computer as the updates had finished, then when turning back on the loading screen with the grey background, apple symbol and rotating loading symbol was zoomed in as much as the resolution would allow. So i restarted a couple more times, still the same thing - every time i turn the computer on the loading screen is massivly zoomed in, once it's done loading and moves to the log in screen it is fine.
I've tried plugging into the projecter again and editing my settings, that did nothing. It's like because i updated while the settings where wonky it's saved it somehow?

OS X :: Disk Warrior Unable To Replace Startup Disk / Connect To TC To Transfer Across DW's Preview
Feb 18, 2009Yesterday I switched on my macbook (Leopard) and got the flashing question mark. Ran all the resets and booted with disk utility which encountered an 'Invalid B-tree Node' when attempting to repair the disk. Additionally, the SMART status was verified.
I ran DW 4 last night, and performed the hardware tests which reported that the disk was operating like normal. The majority of my media files and additional work is backed up to my Time Capsule but I still have a folder of papers that are relatively new, and wanted to retrieve. While DW managed to reconstruct the majority of my drive (there seemed to be 15g missing - but it's just music files) including this folder, it couldn't replace the disk, as it encountered 'Serious Disk Malfunctions'.
So, via the Disk Preview I want to transfer my saved folders to my TC, but I don't appear to be able to locate it (via ethernet) through DW - even if it's connected when I boot up in DW. So, first request is: Can I connect to my TC to transfer across in DW's preview?
Second is: What are my options if DW can't replace? Do I need to take it into Apple and get a new HD (it's out of warranty)? It's possibly worth noting that I'm a student and have absolutely no money - so cost effective options are a bonus!

Also when i turn my macbook pro on, i can see the grey background with apple logo, however it does not show my image & login password space. thus i'm unable login to my system.
