OS X :: The Grey Bar In The Bottom, Which Should Display Text Labels "cancel" And "restore"?
Apr 17, 2009
I am experiencing the following time machine issue: When I invoke time machine, the grey bar in the bottom, which should display text labels "cancel" and "restore" or something on the buttons, doesn't show any text in my case. It used to do this correctly. I have 10.5.6 installed - is this a known issue?

I'm using Classic Layout in Mail.app - in the message list the column "Flag" shows all flags/labels as text, i.e. instead of an orange flag icon it shows "Orange". This is rather strange and uses too much space in the list - is there a way to change to icon view? In Mavericks it shows a coloured flag icon.
I tried to find a menu command or Mail.app preference to change this, but couldn't find one. Not sure but I think in OS X 10.10.0 Mail.app showed flag icons; I have OS X 10.10.1 installed.

When I activate Time Machine everything works fine. Last night I noticed that the "Restore" and "Cancel" buttons on the right and left sides of the screen aren't there. I can click where they should be and it either restores or cancels; I just can't see them. What happened?

Late 2009 27" iMac, 16GB RAM
The very first sign of any problem would occur when I would be scrolling down a page and it would stop, then go, then stop, then go.
I ran Verify Disk In Disk Utility and it said that the disk was OK. Then I ran Repair Permissions. It found a couple of things, repaired them and then it said Permissions repaired. I ran Repair Permissions again and it came up clean.
So I restarted and every thing seemed to be OK. I opened Safari, went to one of my favorite sites and was looking through there for a couple of minutes, then suddenly some of the text in the Tool Bar pixelated, and then some of the text in the site that I was on did the same, and then all of the text pixelated. I clicked on and dropped down the menu to Shut Down and all of the text in the menu were pixelated.
I reinstalled Yosemite with no change to the problem. Then I did an erase and reinstall from Time Machine again to no avail. At this point I am thinking that it is a hardware problem, or am I overlooking something.

I have a mid-late 2008 MacBook connected to a Dell U2211H monitor using a Mini DisplayPort -> VGA connection.
When I use 1920x1080, I only get 60 Hz and the display is a fuzzy (text). Also, there are black bars. Why?
Will my issues be solved using a Mini DisplayPort -> DVI connection? Or should I exchange it for the 2209?

A baby managed to get its hands on one of my very important grey iLife restore discs. It appears to be severely scratched, though I do not have access to my mac at the moment to make check on whether it is working or not. Nonetheless, in an effort to salvage it, is there any way to make an identical copy for backup purposes? As in, rip the contents of the original DVD and then burn them to a blank DVD?
I am not financially prepared to pay some ludicrous price to get a replacement from apple, and would like to try everything I can before I resort to... other means of obtaining iLife.

My second problem with my PowerBook G4 DVI 667Mhz is that the screen goes about a half inch off the right and bottom of the display. So unless I position the dock on the left, I can't see it if it's placed on the bottom or right of the screen. I also have to drag any icons that show up on the right of the screen to the middle because I can't see them except for their very edge that appears on the screen. This has happened with OS X 10.3, and still after I installed OS X 10.2.

i think that there is something wrong with my macbook display, but i am not very sure. This problem has been there since the day i bought my macbook so i thought there was nothing wrong till i read one of a post in this forum.
The bottom sides of the macbook screen seems relatively dim as compared to the other sides of the screen and specially prominent when viewed in a white screen. Is there something wrong with the backlight? Should i send to an apple service centre then?

It appears that I have a stuck or dead pixel at the bottom of my MacBook Pro's display. It's relatively small and unnoticeable, but I use my Dock a lot, which is how I noticed it. I originally mistook it for dust. I tried a few tricks for removing stuck pixels, but none worked, which is why I wonder if it's truly dead. I think the pixel functions; it remains a constant gray color when the screen is on, but I don't think it's completely black nor does it change colors regardless of what is supposed to be showing on it. Flashing different colors with the help of a few pixel tools didn't help either. "Massaging" the pixel didn't work, and I don't feel entirely positive about adding pressure the screen as it is. The pixel must have gone out a couple of weeks ago. I only noticed it recently, and I doubt that it's been there the whole time I've had this model. Now it doesn't affect the functionality of the machine in anyway, and it's only one pixel, so there's not anything I can do about it unless I can determine if it can be brought back or not. I doubt that too. I think it is quite gone since it is dark in color and it has not responded to any method of restoration. But for all I know, it could just pop on one day. I don't think anything can be done about it, but I'd like to hear some other takes on it.

Just picked up a 11.6" MBA this past Saturday. I am noticing an interesting display "issue"... I wanted to confirm that other's are not seeing this before I take it back to the store.
On the bottom of the display, there's a strip, maybe 2-3mm worth, where it is darker than the rest of the display. Are any of you seeing this behavior as well? It's particularly noticeable when when using solid background colors.

I guess this is a bit trivial, but I want to change the display at the bottom of my iTunes screen. The part that tells you how many albums you have, the total playing time, and size. Currently, this is displayed with the European system of using commas instead of points as the decimal separators. I may be crazy, but I'm pretty sure it used to have points and then a few days ago, it switched on me. I noticed it after I installed an update. Is there a way of changing it back?

Got a bit of a wierd one. Apple 22" cinema display (the old style). Running from a mac pro with a ATI radeon 1900XT graphics card. Have 4 operating systems running, all were working perfectly until last night. Leopard works great - no problems, as does Tiger and Windows XP running boot camp. What does not work is Vista x64. It was not installed with compatible bootcamp because x64 operating systems are not supported yet. It has been running fine for months though? I also run a small dell 17" TFT off the same graphics card and no problems with that. It defaults to the main desktop on starting up vista, but only in vista. And I get this fast flashing light - about 2 every second or so - regularly. No amber lights and no groups of three.

There seems to be some discoloration or burn it at the bottom of my display - it's a bar that extends across the bottom of my screen and just slightly up either side. I tried to take a picture of it but it doesn't really work well. When the screen is on, but dark (say, netflix or a darker game), it appears faded.Anyway, I am wondering what this is, if it is an easily resolvable issue, and whether it would be covered by the 1-year limited warranty? I'm out in rural VT, so I can't take it to an apple store without driving an hour or so (at least) - can Apple Authorized Repair places do warranty repairs?

I have a 28" inch display attached to newest version of Air. Works ok except when I have a full screen on plain dark grey background, then I see a waviness or flickering effect. Like the dark grey in Iphoto background. Other than this, the other colors seems ok. Pictures are fine, even when dark. Maybe there's a slight flickering with dark blue. Any explanations for this.
using mini display port to dvi. Tried with a friends dual link display, was a little different, but still unstable looking in dark grey when it fills the screen.
Could it be just what it takes to make this color, or the Hertz, which is 60. Other than this, no problem with the screen.

I've got two iMacs in my posession currently from getting replacement machines. Both have screen issues as follows: iMac A - dead & stuck pixels, feint grey horizontal bar running along bottom portion of screen, bottom left corner has noticeable backlight bleed. iMac B - dead & stuck pixels, yellow tinge in bottom portion of screen. So here are my questions. Which iMac should I keep and submit for repair? (does it matter and why or why not?) How does the actual repair get done? For example, if I submit iMac B for repair, could I end up with a grey bar or backlight prob like in iMac A?
Are there multiple layers to the display when they fix specific issues? For example, let's say the dead pixels are on one layer while the yellow tinge is on a different layer, or are both issues on the same layer? I ask because if there are two or more separate layers, there is more of a chance to mess up so I may want to submit the iMac that has the least amount of issues.
Lastly and most importantly, has anyone submitted their iMac for screen repair for these issues and got it back 100% repaired? (no dead/stuck pixels, yellowing, grey bar, backlght bleed) These are #4 and #5 in terms of the number of replacements I've gotten now and I'm sick of it so I may opt to go for repair on either of these existing machines instead of going for replacement #6. But do you think a 6th replacement would be better than going for repair on either of these? Or not?

early 2009 Intel iMac 24". OS 10.6.8.
Working in Excel today, I was highlighting groups of cells with color when the entire screen suddenly had a pale grey-green tint. Can still see colors beneath, but everything tinted (not just the Excel window, but the entire display). White, of course, is most dramatic. The Dell monitor beside it is fine.
I've recalibrated color a half dozen times (have always had to do that to get the Dell and iMac screens as similar as possible). It's impossible to get white on the Mac. Rebooted several times, including hard boot, zapped the PRam, ran Permissions Repair and Disk Repair from the startup CD. Installed Temperature Monitor to see if there's a heat problem, but I could not find normal temp values anywhere on the Web, so that was something of a bust. Temps attached below in case there's an educated set of eyes out there....
Ran some online tests, too, for color distortion, dead pixels, that kind of thing, but nothing reveled.
I've been all over the Web looking for some guidelines, but most posts at apple and elsewhere seem to focus on later-model iMacs with the yellow lower screen problem when new (It's not that) or panic screens of wild colors, stripes, and the like. This is just a grey-green tint that covers the entire screen, rendering whites grey-green and colors muddy.

I purchased a new Mac Mini today (latest base version from Apple Store). I also purchased an LG 2240 (LED backlit) 22" monitor.
The monitor only has a VGA connection therefore I am using the VGA>Mini Display port converter from apple.
The monitor is generally working fine however the display / quality is very grainy, making the text very hard to read. Also although the text is crisp and jagged in quality.

Does anyone feel like the default text size in all applications is too small when your imac is set at it's best resolution?? I really hate to compromise some of the display quality by decreasing the resolution, but everything seems so small!!! I really hoped on a nice big screen i could look at things larger than I could on my laptop!! Is there anything I can do about this? I am new to Mac, so maybe I am just missing something.

Currently I'm trying to look up something in the SVN book on line, and it's all Greek characters. If I view page source, the characters are displayed in the proper font. Google searches show several others having this problem, but no one had a solution. Someone posted a solution here, but it was redacted for some reason and the only part that makes sense is that I should but a product called Suitcase Fusion. I refuse to pay money to make my Mac stop displaying characters in Greek font at random. In some circles that can be considered extortion.
