OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine System Restore?

Jul 1, 2014

I recently did an erase and restore with Time Machine from Mavericks to Leopard (on my MacBook) in order to access stored information on a couple of now-defunct programs. Subsequently I wanted to go back to Mavericks. I did what I did going from Mavericks: held down Command and R while restarting. No deal: I simply ended up with a restart each time. An internet search led me to understand (I think) my error: you need an install disc to move from Leopard to a later program. In fact, I do have a Snow Leopard install disk. But that has been rejected by the computer. That might be because the disk came with my iMac. How did I get Snow Leopard on my MacBook in the first place? An Apple service center installed it when they were servicing my MacBook, which at that time just had Leopard.

I restored my mac from time machine, downgrade from Mac OS X 10.10 to 10.9.3.  After that the position of the input method selection box is not right.  The right place should be: After typing continually, the selection box jump to left edge of the screen: The problem occured in IM, word, web browser, etc. It's all right before I restored from time machine, in both 10.9.3 and 10.10. Some of my firends has the same problem.

OS X :: Time Machine Restore To New HD And No System DVD?

Dec 7, 2010

I bought a new HD to upgrade my iMac. I have everything backed up on a USB drive via Time Machine. This should be simple, but now I can't find my Snow Leopard system DVD. I've looked everywhere but no luck. My current HD is starting to give me "no more space" errors, so I'm having to delete some stuff.

Is there anything I can do? Every site I've looked at says to use the system DVD to start up the computer and then restore from Time Machine. Is there some kind of DVD I can create myself? I do have an old OSX DVD from my G5, version 10.7.2. That won't work with Time Machine "automatically", so I don't think it would be helpful. Or maybe it would work, I don't know.

OS X :: Cannot Boot After Time Machine System Restore

Jan 11, 2011

I am upgrading my hard drive in my MacBook Pro and before removing the old hard drive I backed my time machine up to a NAS (Network Hard Drive). I put in the new drive and booted from the Snow Leopard DVD. I formatted it for HFS+ and then selected the option to Restore System from Full Backup. I selected my network hard drive and all seemed to go well. After clicking restart, the machine restarted, gave me the chime, and then displayed the infamous multi-language kernel panic message with some text in the background. Here's a paraphrase of the background text:

"panic (cpu 0 caller) version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM @/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/osfmk/i386/pmCPU.c:707

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Not Recognise After Restore?

Jun 5, 2014

I had to restore my data from time machine by doing a full migration of all data from my back up drive.

Now that I have recovered my existing system (which did involve a full wipe of HD, internet recovery and an update again from ML to mavericks).

My restored system does not recognise the back up drive as a time machine and it would appear I cannot append any future backups to this TM.

I would have to wipe the disk and start again which I did not particularly want to do.

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Restore Time Machine Files

Jun 22, 2014

I recently erased my Mac partition of my hard drive and got a fresh copy on mavericks. I did this believing I would then be able to restore any important backed-up files later, now all I get in time machine is this:

Everything is greyed out apart from all my files and it stays like this for about five minutes. I know all the data is on the hard drive as it says 250GB of data is on it. Is it just searching through the Hard drive and I need to give it time for the files to show up?

OS X Mavericks :: Incomplete Restore From Time Machine?

Jun 28, 2014

My 2009 iMac running 10.9.3 was having problems with crashing apps and just plain acting weird.  I decided to do a clean reinstall of Mavericks using my Time Machine backup.  I discovered that the Time Machine Restore erases the disk during the process and that would give me the "clean" reinstall.

After completing the restore, Mail, Calendar, Contacts, App Store, iTunes, Maps, QuickTime Player, and iPhoto did not have their proper icons in the dock nor would they run.  Also, all the Utilities including Disk Utility and Activity Monitor showed bad icons and would not run.  Trying to open Disk Utility gives a message "You can't open the application "Disk Utility.app" because it may be damaged or incomplete."  Safari, Notes, Preview and other non OSX system apps seem to be largely OK.

I downloaded the OSXUpdCombo10.9.3.dmg and reinstalled Mavericks.  No change in the icons, but this time Mail did open but then crashed.  I tried moving Disk Utility from my laptop to my iMac with dropbox but OSX will not allow me to replace the bad Disk Utility.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Restore From Time Machine Backup

Jun 24, 2014

Macbook Pro 15", (early 2011) 2.0 GHz, 8GB memory

After having my WD 750GB HD crash, I decided that I would opt for a smaller (256GB) SSD drive and just put Mavericks and my apps on the new drive and keep my user files on an external drive. I've installed and formatted the new drive but I can't figure out how to install just OSX from Time Machine since the entire backup is too big for my new drive.  Before the drive failed, I had installed the latest update for Mavericks (10.9.3?)

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Restore From Time Machine Backup

Aug 30, 2014

My wife deleted some of her Mail mailboxes.  I couldn't figure out how to recover them.  So I decided to a complete restore of her system from her Time Machine backups.  I restarted with the option key down and choose the options to allow a restore from Time Machine.  I choose her most recent "good" backup".  The process began, indicating that it would take 11 hours to complete.  I left the computer when it showed about 5% complete.  When I next checked the computer about 8 hours later I found the startup screen with the spinning wheel on the screen.  I waited about 4 hrs. and then shutdown the computer.  It will not boot.  It simply shows the startup screen with the spinning wheel.  So I repeated the entire process, this time selecting an older TM backup to restore from.  Unfortunately I experienced the same result.

Her computer is a 2012 Macbook Pro running 10.9.4.  Her TM backups are stored on a Time Capsule.

Applications :: Time Machine Restore Of HD - Cannot Copy System

Dec 30, 2009

I had the poor luck of having my Imac HD die a few weeks back. I now have a new Imac HD and would like to restore my HD back to the way it was before it died. I have gone into time machine, then selected my Imac, selected my Imac HD, and selected the correct date in time for the restore. I have clicked restore and the system goes out and starts to do its job. It identifies all the files (roughly 200k files and 11.41GB's), then it starts to copy them, and it chugs away for 30-45 mins.

Then up pops a message:
"you can't copy "system" because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't distinguish between upper and lower case letters in file names." The restore aborts and I have wasted over an hour with nothing to show for it. What can I do to restore my system? I have been unable to operate for 3 weeks now, and the people at the apple store just keep telling me how easy time machine is to restore from.

I did find a ethernet cable so my question is, can I cancel the restore? And restart it via ethernet cable? It doesny list an option to cancel but can I just turn off by the power button or turn off time capsule?

OS X :: How To Repair System After Full Restore To Time Machine Backup

Jan 13, 2011

I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.

After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.

Intel Mac :: Time Machine System Restore - Space Taken Up But No Files Seen

May 31, 2012

I've had a new hard drive installed on my iMac, (and the place that did it for me also installed 10.6 OS). Now, when I plugged in an external hard drive I had been using with time machine (and OS 10.5), and clicked 'restore' in the time machine interface, it transferred 200+gigs of data onto the new hard drive. However, I can't see any files anywhere - only see that that much space is now taken on the new hard drive. I've since read elsewhere that I should have used 'migration assistant' to do the job, but before I do this, I what to get rid of the 200+gig of data taking up room. How do I do this without a fresh install of the OS? (I don't have disks for 10.6). Or will the time machine restore (with migration assistant) not work between 10.5 & 10.6?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Restore Selective Intonation Vs Full Installation Compromised System

Mar 15, 2012

I have reviewed notes regarding selective app restore method and am aware that there are issues assossiated with failed apps since the original app installer installs files in various libraries and system settings..My backed up Mac contains rogue programs such as the programming app python 3 and various rogue bugs and system settings

1 Does a full restore reset all backed up system settings or does it keep the fresh installation and include all your apps and settings such as mail accounts mail folders documents pictures movies podcasts etc without the bugs

2 Should the answer to 1 be a yes all compromised settings will be restored, then will I have issues with installing VMware fusion as its an encripted integrated app that I keep all my master business applications but store documents in the Mac documents area

Other factors

1 My accounting tax business has been hacked over and over again for the last 7 months from start of tax season

2 I have lost 50% of my clients due to the interruptions and been hospitalized twice from sitting on the computer for extended hours and days reinstalling fresh system and restoring Mac documents only, 3 times over, as well as trying to learn everything about best practice, hacks etc

3 I'm using fire vault 2 however the time machine backup is not encripted are there any potential problems with either of the two methods?

4 I will be using a proxy server when I next build the Mac will this be enough to mitigate potential security breach using the full time machine restore method?

5 I have many apps that I have not purchased through the app center and have not kept the keys and will be a headache to get all my details

6 what implications are there as far as the prior keychain access is consurned? How does that get restored?

What is the most effective and efficient method to restore from time machine given above scenario?
