Whenever I start up my mac book pro with my LaCie 1TB ext HD attached via FW800 it tries to boot from the LaCie instead of the internal HD. Obviously there is no OS on my ext HD since it's a movie back up so I just get the flashing folder icon.
View 2 RepliesI have recently tried to run Onyx which has identified a problem which requires me to run disc utilities from the start up disc. The Snow leopard disc I have only appears to offer Install option.
Q1 Have I missed something?
Q2 Otherwise should I try to run Disc Utilities from an earlier version of OSX
My G-4 startup disc is full and now the computer won't start up. I am told to put a startup disc in the drive and restart from it, but I cannot get the disc drive to open. I have tried everything, including copying over to external hard drive. I read that if you hold the mouse button down, the disc drive will open, but this hasn't worked.

After I download Yosemite, successfully, I have been getting messages that that my Time Machine was not backing up.  When I open Time Machine I get a message Time Machine disc not connected. Also the Oldest Backup 28th Sept October 2013 - Latest Backup 28th October 2014. I have checked My Book and that is working OK. What is happening with Time Machine.Â

I have a bluetooth wireless Apple keyboard and magic mouse combo. I bought a Power Mac Dual G5 from a friend just to "play" with as my friend needed money badly. In fact, I am letting him buy it back if he comes up with the money within a year - forget the fact that I loaned way more than it's worth, but I just want to see if I can play with it to get something for my terrible investment.
I don't have a wired keyboard and mouse for it. He told me it has bluetooth AirPort card installed in it. When I try starting up, all I get is the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning circle thing. I had hoped it would just "auto sense" my Apple bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse, but it doesn't appear to be. But is there any way to have it automatically find my bluetooth keyboard and mouse or do I need a wired keyboard and mouse to even start it up?
DOes anyone know how to get time machine to start backing up as soon as the drives connected? my old mbp running 10.5 used to start backing up immediatly but my new mbp and 10.6.1 doesnt seem to start until i click "back up now" from the menu bar!

All of a sudden this morning my Mac Pro hard drive filled up with data...completely. I had a Finder window open and watched as the available space went form 90gb+ to ZERO. About this Mac shows over 100gb of "Other" data and ran Space Gremlin and it shows 207gb of "Restricted" data.

i'm trying to install leopard on my Imac G5 running tiger but here's the deal.
i got a leopard start up disc from another Imac thinking that i could just put leopard on my Imac...all the requirements are met but it doesn't work.
I got an eMac with failed hard drive which I am about to replace. The problem is that all hard drives available out there need to be formatted first for Mac. So the question is how can I format new internal hard drive in the computer, which is going to be used as a start up disc the same time? Is that can be done? Or do I have to mount it as a external one and format it that way (that will required me to buy ATA connector which I try to avoid.?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I accidentally saved the wrong files to my start up disc. It appears that mac is seeking direction and isn't getting it. All I get is the white screen with the spinning ball. Things I've tried already, 1. (Shift Key) Booting in Safe-Mode. result is: Mac starts to enter safe mode, the little power meter starts to build on the screen, after about 20 seconds the meter stops and the fan speed increases until it gets pretty loud. Eventually the fan speed mellows out, but it never actually boots up. 2. (Option key) This gives me a choice of two drives to choose from, MAC HD & Mac Recovery. I've tried clicking on both drives multiple times by themselves with no luck. I've tried clicking on them seperately and then went right into safe mode with no luck. 3. I've even tried downloading a recovery file from apple and put it on a disc. result: It reads the disc and the goes back to that wonderful white screen and spinning ball.

I´m trying to discover (with AppleCare support) why my new Air has virtually NO space left on the Start Up Disc...EVER. The OTHER files have always been huge and we´ve trashed everything imaginable. The AppleCare rep suggests that I consider wiping my hard drive clean and starting over. I've done that with my Pro and other computers and will not go there unless absolutely necessary. Today my OTHER appeared for a few hours to be the ONLY kind of files on my SU Disk and indicated I had only 4 MB of space left! Right now, it´s reading that I have all categories of files represented again, but OTHER is still over 41 GB big. Days ago, I took off ALL my docs, movies, photos and am still in constant red alert. That´s why I wonder about DropBox. Some out there on the net say it DOES take up space and others say NO.

We have just had a replacement drive put into a 15.4" MacBookPro and the installer made a mistake with the name. How can we change it to the right one? Do we have to insert the Mac OSX disc (Leopard) into the machine at start up and will this wipe anything that is on the machine?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to use Onyx to check the status of my new macbook pro and it told me that the startup volume needed to be repaired. I tried first of all a safeboot as I understood that this would do a disc check but I wasnt told anything from that.
So I then inserted the disc OS X install dvd (10.6) and restarted the MB. After the chimes, i pressed the 'c' button. I have tried two times, once just pressing the button, once pressing & holding (no-where does it say which to do). I have found on searching alo that I may need to press the 'option' key but I have no idea where this is!
Anyway, the disc makes a repetative noise and then ejects, and then the MB starts up.. but not from the disc.
What am I doing wrong please??!

I frequently download stuff from the web. If it's something I think is worth keeping, I eventually dump it on an external HD to free up space on my MBP. I don't always have that HD with me and the amount of stuff that's on there has grown to a point where it's getting hard to keep track of what's on it and what isn't yet. Do you know of a utility that will, I don't know, index the external HD for me, letting me see what's on it even when it's not connected to my Mac?
