OS X :: Insert The Mac Disc (Leopard) Into The Machine At Start Up Cause Wipe Out Data?
Oct 10, 2009
We have just had a replacement drive put into a 15.4" MacBookPro and the installer made a mistake with the name. How can we change it to the right one? Do we have to insert the Mac OSX disc (Leopard) into the machine at start up and will this wipe anything that is on the machine?
My imac G5 failed to start properly today, just getting grey screen. I tried all the things suggested in the postings and managed to get it to the stage where I could reinstall via Time Machine etc but there was no disc to find on the imac to install the data too. Has my hard drive died? what do I do now?
For some reason my opitcal drive wont let me insert any disc. theres nothing in it cause when i tried to put a disc in it wouldnt hit anything!? i have no idea. If it helps i have a macbook, i bought in early 2009, Mac OSX 10.5.8!
I cannot insert a disc into my drive. Not sure it is relevent, but I was using cds last night and ejected a disc, but left it half-way out of the drive overnight. After removing the disc this morning, it will not let me insert another one. I restarted the computer, but the problem remains. I have a 27-inch intel Imac.
First time burning on a Mac... getting pissed - should be easier than this. I fumbled around for a while and now have a "Burn Folder" folder on my desktop with 3.7 GB of files I need to burn. When I open the file, click "Burn", it tells me to "Insert a Blank Disc to Begin" Okay, seems like I'm making progress... until I insert a blank DVD-R (4.7 GB)... nothing. It ignores the disc.
If I insert the DVD-R separate from the burn folder, I get a window asking me what I want to do, e.g. "Open Disc Utility, etc." none of which seem to be remotely related to burning a DVD... I thought these things were supposed be intuitive.... grrr.... I can't believe I've been I'm spending this much time burning a #$*%ing disc!
When i insert a dvd it says not supported disc. I copy the movies on my pc and when i open them again it says : The document could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands. You may need to install additional software to open this type of file. i have other programs such as DVD player but it still doesn't open.
I am not able to insert a dvd into the player on my 24" Mac desktop. I haven't used the dvd function in over a month. I am pretty sure there is not one in there now. I went into iDVD and DVD Player and there were no options to eject a disc so I think it is empty. However, when I try to insert a disc there is a thud and it does not go in. I tried to force it (a mistake, I know) and it went about half way in but it did not go easily. When I tried to remove it, it was stuck and it scratched the dvd when i pulled it out. Are DVD player problems common with this model? It is going on 3 years old.
I've searched the forums, but nothing seems to answer my question specifically. I'm giving my computer to my mother and I wanted to permanently wipe all my data/documents for two reasons: 1. To allow her the maximum amount of space and 2. To clear up any embarrassing emails... etc. which I know I have. So,I diligently went in and erased all my mail from "Mail".I went into Users/MyName/Library -etc and found anything mail related and deleted that (as far as I could tell I was erasing all my folders, in box, out box, downloaded files etc.) I also hit "empty trash" after I deleted stuff. However, when I did a search using "spotlight" it was showing up old emails I thought I had permanently deleted. Eek! I found this by accident when I was teaching my mother about "spotlight". My mother's not computer savvy enough to even remember how to use spotlight... but nevertheless I don't want my stuff on there. Other than doing a clean swipe of my hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. (i had OS X 10.3.9) and a friend updated me to OS X 10.4 - yes for free... naughty me... I don't feel guilty coz I did buy a whole new computer coz my 3 1/2 year old couldn't do what I wanted anymore - ie burn dvds, video record, wifi, more than 40GB HD... so they made a lot of money out of me! Anyway. I also don't really want to wipe the applications just in case something happens to my new computer. I'd like to be able to use the old one as a back up.....
Since upgrading to Lion my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) it keeps freezing and it takes much longer to boot compared to Snow Lepoard.I upgraded it from 2GB to 4GB hoping it would run smoother but it was so hot in operation (I literally couldn't hold it after just a few minutes) I had to take it back to 2GB. I also notice that all my apps return on logon even though I have specificed not to re-open apps.I have verified and repaired the disk using Disk Utility and also ran a supposed recovery of Lion but it took 1hr (including Lion download) however when I logged back on it was the same software and data etc; is it possible to do a complete data wipe and install Lion? It has updated to the latest software however I'm starting to get very frustrated; just earlier the whole thing froze and I had to force it to power off.
Info: MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), MacBook Pro (Mid 2009)
I put in a cd that my computer was unable to read. I tried to eject it using disk utility but it failed. I read that another option was to restart the computer and hold down command, option, o, and f at the same time to open disk firmware to eject it. instead of actually working, my computer froze at the rstart screen, and i have no idea what to do - and i am unable to insert a disc.
I know that when I delete a file the data is still recoverable from the hard drive until it is replaced by other data.
So I'm looking for a program that wipes any data (preferably with the Gutmann Wipe method) off of the rewritable parts of the hard drive. Is there such a program for the Mac?
This is my first time posting on the forums here, however I've gotten through many a problem in the past. I haven't really been able to find anything that addresses my specific issue, Here is my situation: I got a new iMac after my first one died on me (R.I.P.) the hard drive from the first one is still good and I'm using it via an external enclosure. The new iMac came and I needed to start using it ASAP (school/work) before being able to migrate using the old HD (had to wait on the enclosure to get here.) Now that I'm able to do so (migrate) I'm having a lot of trouble. Is it because I started a new user account? Do I need to wipe the new HD and start from scratch? Migration assistant gave me the option to replace existing user which I chose, however that did not seem to work. I've done it a couple times and tried a couple different ways and the only thing I've been able to do is have the option of booting up using either user. What do I need to do to get everything I need from my old HD? The biggest problem I'm having is getting my new iTunes to find my iPhone backup (contacts, notes etc.) from my old computer/HD along with the whole 2 user thing?
I have a 5 year old iMac that has started to behave strangely.
First Microsoft Office, which had been running just fine for years, now won't open (an error required it to close). When I installed OpenOffice.org, that also showed the same message when I fired it up. Other apps are closing suddenly at a rate much higher than previously.
I have already applied advice I gleaned from the web, and forums. Problem persists.
I figure that I might as well do my very first rebuild, rather than spending ages trying to figure out the problem. With the PC, it was an annual event, so I got used to it, but I've never had the need to rebuild a Mac.
Are there any reliable web pages that tell how to wipe the hard drive and start again?
I made a backup image file of D2 LOD and im trying to install it again but the installer keeps telling me that i need to insert disc. So my question is, how do i mount this image so that the installer can use it.
Clarification: I lost the original cd so i just have this backed up image, so the image is legit.I just wanted to play this game and i dont wanna have to go buy the disk again.
If someone maliciously runs the "Remote Wipe" feature from an iPad/iPhone against your computer or laptop, is the data recoverable (with something like Data Rescue), or does it run a secure wipe with n times overwriting of files?
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5) I have everything backed up on an external hard drive but I realized I left my snow leopard DVD at school (I'm home from college for the break). Is their a way to restore from backup without the disc?
I use a lot of plug ins for music production in Logic. Like an idiot, i upgraded to snow leopard, after having this problem with the upgrade to leopard from tiger. Of course half of my plug ins dont work.So i Time Machine backed up everything on my HD. I put my old leopard install disc in and restored to my Time Machine volume. It took about 2 and a half hours.
At the end of that, it asks you to restart, and i do and as soon as the apple pops up on the off-white screen, kernel panic and i have to restart. this is never ending Ive tried repairing and verifying disk permissions from the leopard disc of my HD and still nothing. My final guess would be to just do a clean install of Leopard and then restore from time machine again. This seems SUPER risky to me as there are TONS of important project session files that i CANT afford to lose.Everything is backed up on my Time Machine drive, im still just a little nervous about doing this.Anyone have any other ideas and does this sound like a secure plan?
I purchased a new MM yesterday to replace one I bought 5 years ago. Everything is working great on it, but I have a mystery device called 'Remote Disc' in the Finder device list. I have attached a screen shot. When I insert a CD a new listing for the CD device is made & 'Remote Disc' remains.
