View 23 RepliesWhile many of the changes present in betas of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard have been discussed at length by Apple followers, one tester has taken to the web with observations on some of the more subtle refinements spread through the most recent build of the next-gen operating system. AppleInsider reader inewton1974 pointed us to an annotated Flickr album of nearly four dozen Snow Leopard screenshots he published a bit earlier in the week. He begins by noting that the software's setup assistant will now warn users if they don't supply a password hint and claims that QuickLook capabilities have been built into universal Open and Save dialog windows.
Another interesting discovery is Apple's use of transition effects within the new Cocoa-based Finder. In particular, the Clean Up command for tidying Finder windows reportedly "slides" icons into place instead of shifting them abruptly. This is described as a "a neat visual effect," and several others similar to it are likely to follow. The Finder also present an slider control for resizing icons in the lower right-hand corner of windows displayed in icon mode, as can be seen in the first screenshot below. Additionally, it's noted that a QuickTime preference pane is absent from Snow Leopard, as are any preferences from within the QuickTime X Player itself, leading to renewed speculation that Apple may do away with its premium QuickTime Pro offering entirely. A series of screenshots with inewton1974's observations follows:.......................
I will be purchasing a MacBook on thursday. Will Snow Leopard be in the box or can I ask for it seeing as it's a day before?

View 10 Replies View RelatedAll of the following questions are in regards to Snow Leopard and my 2008 mac pro Octo.
1) Will Final Cut Pro 6 from FCS2 work? If so, any issues, and will I see a performance increase/decrease? (I have 8 cores dual ati 2600's)
2) Will Quicktime pro carry over when I install Snow Leopard? And Will it use all 8 cores?
3) Will Final Cut Pro 6 have an issue with the new quicktime?
4) Will visual hub, mpegstreamclip, or Handbreak be incompatible with snow leopard?
5) Will my final cut pro projects that I created in leopard, still work when I install snow leopard?
6) Will Word 2003 work with Snow Leopard?
I use my mac pro to make a living, should I risk installing Snow Leopard if Leopard works fine? Or do you think I should wait?
I am planning on buying the upgrade of Snow Leopard from the Apple store on Saturday. Do you think they will sell out fast, or will Apple prepare for the worst and stock on alot?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.Â
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

I know there is the option to turn off the transparency of the Leopard menu bar, but I want it to look just like the Tiger one (see below):
Is there a nice app that does this for you, or am I in for some resource editing?
My finder crashes every time i go to applications, also when i go to application thru stacks. what going on? i did a restart.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI used a cool app called filecutter to cut and paste files (move them). Snow leopard broke the app. I can no longer right click on file and see the filecutter option. I guess path finder has the ability, but I do not need all the extra stuff it comes with.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy iMac freezes once or twice even three times a day for no obvious reason. This happens using safari only or safari and mail. This has happened for 2 weeks. No change in my system for 2 years, except regular updates. I can close the application (Safari for example) but the iMac stays frozen. When I use "force to quit", it is proposed to restart Finder. But, the iMac stays stucked with the color wheel turning. The only way to stop and restart is to switch off and on.

I did the usual finder.png in Dock.app and Finder.icons in Finder.app but no good.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOn the dock, to the far right you can have applications, downloads, etc list of folder. What I would like to do is modify the default behavior for these icons only so that they open on hover rather than click. I want to do this because I have them setup as list style, and I can very quickly browse to whatever folder I need from there. If you open a folder in column view, you can hold down ALT and resize all the columns at the same time. This will also change column size for ALL folders in the system immedietly. Is there such a shortcut where I can also change the size of the finder window for ALL finder windows? Some finder windows open as tiny little thing, and I woudl prefer a nice large default window. I know you can do each one separately and close it but who wants to do that for every folder?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a reasonably experienced iMac user but can anybody tell me please why the (grey) sidebar in Finder has gone missing and tell me how to get it back? I have never seen this happen before.
I am running Snow Leopard on an iMac (intel). Obvious things like preferences/Sidebar checked (all items in there ticked including Devices, Shared, Places, etc).

Tried to turn off computer and it kept prompting me to force quite various applications. I have since restarted the computer but now am getting this error when trying to open Finder. I have looked through several discussions and unfortunately am not an apple expert so much of what I am reading is foreign to me.I have opened the Terminal and entered a prompt that made all of my desktop docs and finder visable, but as soon as I closed out the Terminal it all disappeared again. Can anyone point me in the right direction - step by step - to get Finder back up and running. To my knowledge all other applications seem to be working as normal.FYI I do have a few extermal items attached to the Mac. (1) extermanl hard drive for the Time Machine, and USB drive.

I really prefer Windows way of sorting a folder, first folders and then files, is there a way to do it in Snow Leopard? I have done this: [URL:...] But that doest work for me in SL.
View 24 Replies View RelatedSo I found an Automator script that let me compress in the Rar format. I created the correct folders (~/Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder/) and went to see if I could compress just some folders but I have no "More.." contextual menu entry. In Leopard I had it. How am I supposed to use Automator workflows now? Am I alone in not having this entry? I have the 10.6.1 update installed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter getting the message that Finder had an error -10801 (or something similar, i can't remember...) I forced my macbook pro to shut down. Afterwards I can log-in but non of the finder windows appear on the desktop. Also I cannot open any other application or shut down the Computer. when I put in my Leopard Install disc and turn on the Computer holding down the C I only get a grey screen. I have done that for 10 minutes. When I do the same with Snow Leopard "CPU Drop-in DVD" I get a menu: 'Choosing language' and then MAC OS X Installer asks 'To set up the installation of Snow Leopard, click continue". However, I am afraid of doing that if it erases all my documents. I have the possibility of choosing a UTILITY menu, but down know what to do with this (e.g. Go to Disk Utility or Terminal). Does anyone have a clue of how to help the Danish student?

I think I may have this Java Trojan virus that many have been talking about, in which the most common attribute of it is that it makes my Finder display folder names as N80, N81, etc.... in replacement of titles such as 'Open Finder' and 'Empty Trash'?I have tried a few things, such as Repair Disk Permissions, restarting, and logging off, but to no success.Â

Over the years my finder windows have been set to different colors, font sizes and so on. When I make a change I select the make default box in the show view options, but they never default except for that one finder window. I have erased com.apple.finder.plist and just for fun the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist but can not get the finder to go to a true default. Is there another plist that I am missing?

I just got my computer reformatted, and lost all icon customization. I went to change them and did all successfully (most in Candybar), but the Finder has been a problem. I initially forgot how to do it, so some research said I could do it if I simply replaced the file in the System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources (Finder.png) path with my own of the same name. I did, but it didn't take - still blue. So then I did it through Candybar and it just disappeared from the dock. I've tried reverting the Finder.png file and nothing, as well as restoring the original icon through Candybar.
I saw one answer about booting a clone, so I researched how to do that, and can't do it on my internal for some reason. I tried an external, but it said it'd have to wipe all files first, which I won't.I should add that an archive and install isn't an option - I JUST got this fixed by Apple yesterday since I had lost my install disks, so I certainly can't do it myself.
