OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Finder Crashes When Trying To Search

Apr 2, 2012

The original problem was whenever I opened a new Finder window and began to type in the search bar, as soon as I got three letters in, the whole thing would crash on me. After some unsuccessful fix attempts, now Finder no longer opens from the dock icon its supposed to. When I click on the icon, a new one with the default App icon opens at the end of the dock, and it works from there. The search problem also only appears when opening a finder window directly from the dock. If Finder opens to, say, allow me to choose a file to upload to a website, search doesn't crash on me. Spotlight still works correctly.

I tried to delete/reset the prefrences, but when I go to the folder, the preference list for Finder isn't there. I tried removing all the preferences and restartting just in hopes it would help, but it didn't solve anything. I've also repaired disk permissions using the disk utility, but that seems to have created the new problem.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Open Finder Window And Finder Preferences Don't Stick

Apr 5, 2012

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.

Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

OS X :: MS Word Crashes Under Snow Leopard?

After upgrading? to Snow Leopard, i found my HP 3055 Printer didn't work, nor did MS Word2008 work without crashing. I finally got through the printer issue by re-loading a driver, but after removing and re-loading Word, I still have issues. I've repaired permissions, verified the disk and I still find it crashes when calling up a file. This app is impossible to work with, so what to do next?

OS X :: Snow Leopard (Installer Crashes Repeatedly)

Jun 13, 2009

I just downloaded the 10a380 build of snow leopard, and burned it using disk utility to a DL DVD. The burn completed successfully and the computer recognizes it. Every time I click on Install, it opens the installer and I press continue.. it says "Finding Disks" with a blue progression bar for about 30 seconds, and then exits the installer. I even rebooted the computer, holding down option, and when it gets to the screen with different partitions, the disk ejects itself. I have bootcamp with windows 7 installed if that makes any sort of difference.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: TM Causing Constant Crashes?

Apr 18, 2012

Since I hooked up a new external hard drive as a TM backup, my computer crashes constantly. And I mean constantly.  I never had this problem with my previous external drive, which eventually failed.

If I unplug the new drive, the computer works perfectly. Having spent $$$ on a 1TB drive, I don't want to buy yet another one.

I did notice that the drive has USB 3.0 on the bottom ID label.  I'm using USB 2.0.  Does USB 3.0 require a special port because my 2007 Mac Mini doesn't have one as far as I know.

OS X :: ICal Crashes - Full Of Errors In Snow Leopard?

Sep 27, 2010

I waited a long time to upgrade my MacBook to Snow Leopard, mostly because I didn't really need any of the speed increases or other updates, and because I remained concerned about having new bugs in my system. I was always happy with Leopard and never had any issues. I finally did upgrade to SL, and iCal is giving me hell. Its tough to explain the problems that its causing. Basically, the boxes get out of alignment (see attached screenshot), then stuff disappears, sometimes will come back if I click forward a month and then back. If I do this more than one or two times, it just straight up crashes. It is incredibly frustrating. Has anyone else run into similar iCal issues? I feel like a calendar program is one of the more straightforward things Apple has to work on, so I am really surprised that out of everything, this is the biggest upgrade problem I have run into.

Mac Pro :: Random Crashes And Reboots - Snow Leopard Broken

Sep 8, 2009

Installed Snow Leopard on my 1st gen Mac Pro and had nothing but trouble: random crashes and re-boots that have gotten so bad that now it crashes during boot up. Part way through the spinny wheel you get after the boot-up Apple logo either half the screen goes orange (!) and it crashes, or the centre of the screen corrupts and it crashes or I get the multi-lingual grey screen of death. Same happens if I boot from the Snow Leopard DVD. Pretty unhappy as you can imagine: can anyone suggest anything? I've tried re-seating the graphics card , blowing out the dust and I've rotated all the memory: makes no difference.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Freezes - Crashes - System Hangs

Dec 7, 2009

A few months ago I had a problem with my Macbook Pro, (late 2009 model, 15" 2.53 ghz) that many users with Snow Leopard have, the random 30 second freezes. I simply reset the PRAM and SMC and I never encountered it again. Now, out of the blue, on Sunday (yesterday), I started experiencing these hangs again, but worse. The night before I had been browsing the web and my battery went to reserve and shut down, so I plugged it in and when I awoke and turned it on I started experiencing problems. I figured I would try the same fix, and it almost seemed to make the problem worse. Now if I shut down the computer via "apple -> shut down", then turn it back on and log in etc., from the first few seconds the machine hangs. If I open a folder I get the immediate beach-ball and the machine is un-responsive for anywhere from 1 minute - 5+ minutes.

I have read a lot of fixes for this problem, but most of the people's problems resulted from using Safari or Spotlight. I strictly use Firefox and very rarely even open Safari, and I think I've used Spotlight maybe 3 times total, none in the past few months. So far the things I've tried are:

- Reset PRAM
- Reset SMC
- Run Disc Utility and verify, repair etc. (from SL install disc)

So I'm wondering right now what can I do? Its finals week right now and im in college so wiping my HD is not an option. I feel like there is just something hanging the computer but I can't find the culprit.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Every 10 Seconds Samba Crashes?

Mar 16, 2012

Windows and other SMB users can no longer connect to 10.6.8 Server Mac Mini. SMB service is "running" in Server Manager, and all settings look correct, and haven't changed since November 2011. Restarting the service doesn't fix it. I'm not a samba expert, so I don't know what to do. Googling the pdb_get_methods_reload error yields all sorts of things, but I'm hesitant to try any of them as I don't want to disrupt any of the other services.

Because of the many problems I heard about using FCS3 with Snow Leopard when they both first came out, I've held off upgrading my OS from 10.5.8. Now that some time has passed, is it safe to install Snow Leopard without worrying about freezes and crashes with using Final Cut Studio 3? OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Character Pallett Repeatedly Opens On Its Own And Crashes

May 14, 2012

Starting this morning I am being driven crazy by the Character Pallett launching unexpectedly on its own and then crashing almost immediately. Then it attempts to launch again, flashes briefly on screen, and crashes again. My crash log shows the same repeated process.[Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalI nconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid parameter not satisfying: (index >= 0) && (index < [_itemArray count])'] It's pretty impossible to get anything done. I tried reinstalling OSX combo 1.6.8, but the installer would not see my startup drive as being eligable; I then reinstalled Snow Leopard 10.6 and attempted to update to 10.6.8 that way. But this attempt lead to an error that cancled the install. So now I am running 10,6, but with many apps that require 10.6.8. And the Character Pallett keeps poping up and then crashing even with 10.6. I'm beginning to think it may be a hardware problem, either ram or logic board issue; but I lack the diagnostic skills to figure it out. I thought of trying to launch the Character Pallett on purpose, but when I open the System Preferences and click the box that would place the Keybaord icon in the menu bar (which is the only way I know to get to the Character Pallett) the icon doesn't appear. The check mark doesn't even stick.

OS X :: Snow Leopard / Dock And Finder Mods?

Oct 28, 2009

On the dock, to the far right you can have applications, downloads, etc list of folder. What I would like to do is modify the default behavior for these icons only so that they open on hover rather than click. I want to do this because I have them setup as list style, and I can very quickly browse to whatever folder I need from there. If you open a folder in column view, you can hold down ALT and resize all the columns at the same time. This will also change column size for ALL folders in the system immedietly. Is there such a shortcut where I can also change the size of the finder window for ALL finder windows? Some finder windows open as tiny little thing, and I woudl prefer a nice large default window. I know you can do each one separately and close it but who wants to do that for every folder?
