OS X :: How To Organize Files / Can't Arrange By Name
Oct 6, 2010
I've been a long time windows user and just last week got my first mac! (macbook pro core i5) and so far I'm loving everything about it. Altought I do have some vices I brought with me from windows and I wanted to see if you guys could help me out. On windows I was used to arranging my files automatically by name, and windows would organize it first the folders and then the files itself...all by name.
On mac, I do know how to arrange my files by name, but for example, on my documents folder I have a mix of files (txt, docx, ppt) and folders.
I wanted the folders appearing first (by name) and then the files (also by name)
How am I supposed to organise my files in order for Plex to be able to understand, and tag them. I read that for Movies I have to organise them like this:
Movies
:Movie Name
::Movie.avi
I haven't had much success with this. Also, how do I organise my TV Shows for them to be recognised by Plex?
I am trying to organize my iTunes library and files. I have a question about the 2 files listed below. I understand iTunes media is like the master file, but what is "my music" file and if i move files there from iTunes media/music, do i need to make a copy of these files and if i make a copy, is this creating a duplicate file taking up memory space or is this an index?Â
Mac HD/user/music/ itunes/ iTunes media Mac HD/user/music/my music Â
Info: iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)
When transferring my iTunes library from backup to my new iMac, some of the files have lost their information and there seems to be many duplicate files.
Is there a quick and easy way to restore my library to its former glory?Â
I've recently moved from Windows to Mac. Anyway, I've noticed that the iLife apps (mostly iPhoto and iTunes) have the option to let them handle the media files for me. I'm trying to decide if I would be better having them do that for me. For example, in iPhoto - I see that if I don't let it copy every photo I import into its own folder - It won't add ColorSync profiles (does it matter?)
On the other side, it would be more difficult moving into different media organization software if I let the iLife apps do the organization by themselves.
I have a bunch of music on my computer that isn't properly named, like for instance:
Flo Rida - Right Round is named: right round flo rida.
This is cause I didn't care before and now I do. I also have a lot of videos on my computer, mostly personal, that I'd like to rename. I tried doing it one by one (hitting enter/return key, then changing the name) but it's taking to long.
Is there a program that I can do it? Sorry if this was discussed already, not quite sure what to search.
I just installed an SSD into my optical drive bay, as well as upgrading my RAM (from 4 Gigs to 8) of my late 2008, MBP 15". I am booting it up for the first time, since installation, and, now need to re-org my files so that the MBP makes optimal use of the new SSD and RAM.Â
Should I now migrate all my files from my old HD (still in its bay) onto my new SSD? If so, what is the best way to do so?Â
Well, now that I've booted up, the MBP doesn't even see the new SSD? I made sure I installed it as closely as possible to the OWC instructional video.Â
Is there a step after installing that I need to do?Â
Info: MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
I aim finding music files in various locations on my mac. Is there any software out there I can download that will find and organize these for me? I am finding far too many duplicates.
I don't like the way that finder arranges my files and folders. I have tried all the arrangements and none of them "flow" for me. What I would like to do is to be able to put my files / folders where I want them. I like to group similar folders together and put the most important files/folders at the top. Now this isn't an exhaustive list of how I want to arrange them. Its more about where my eyes go and what I want to see. I am a new mac user so maybe this is a really simple fix that I don't know about.Â
In windows, we can go to the folder options and choose "Apply to all folders" to apply the setting of a current folder to all other folders. I opened the finder, pressed the "windows" key and choose view > keep arranged by > kind.
It does arrange things by kind, but if i move or delete a folder, it does not auto arrange it again by kind. Can someone please elaborate upon this? How can I keep my folder auto arranged by kind?
I've got a folder of files which I add to on a weekly basis, by dragging the file in there, and it just goes to the bottom. So when I open the folder, all the most recent stuff is at the the bottom of the folder. Now I've got a problem since I updated to Snow Leopard. When I opened that folder, everything was arranged alphabetically, and arrange by date makes the newest go to the top.
Is there any way I can adjust this so that it reverses, like when you do a search for something and you arrange by order, ascending or descending?
How do I go about arranging all folders by kind? Whenever I goto view options and select "use as defaults", it only applies to that folder...not to all folders!! I have Snow Leopard
How could i arrange the icons on the mac desktop? I know I can right click and arrange it by name and size. But how do I put an icon in the middle of the screen? (or somewhere else)
I have ripped all my Cds into iTunes, but in starting to make playlists it is apparent that some artists are listed multiple times as they appear with different bands, and others do not appear at all.I have tried searching different categories, compilations etc, and Finder box does not bring them up.Do I need additional software to manipulate my tunes in iTunes? How can I re arrange the tunes so that they appear only under one artist? How do I make my "lost" artists tunes appear?
I'm using Leopard and just reformatted my macbook. Whenever I drop an icon into the finder window the icon get placed wherever I drop it instead of being placed alphabetically. I can go to view>clean up, and it fixes it but I want it to go back to where it always just did it.
Also, the icons do not increase or decrease columns when I make the finder window larger or smaller, it just always stays at 3 columns.
When I change the track numbers, they don't go into the correct order. How could I fix this? When I change the track numbers, they don't go into the correct order.
I want to know about how to re-arrange the photos in iPhoto after i transfer all the photos in external hard disk. My photos hvnt the title name so after transfer all the photos into the external hard disk. the existing photos in iphotos is not classiffied now. it become mess together!!
Is this feature missing in Leopard? I have icons all over the place. There's a new option to "clean up" but the auto arrange options are gone or at least I can't find them.
1: I can't seem to find a way to disable folders from auto-arranging themselves. I want to organize some of my folders randomly but I can only seem to arrange them by Name, Date, Label, etc. Some direction would be helpful, as I haven't used anything but Windows until now.
2: In Windows I had System Clean-Up and System Defrag to help maintain and keep my system organized/clean. Does OS X have similar programs or is there any other type of program Mac has for users maintain their system?
I have a finder window of pictures which I am displaying as icons, but I want to order them so that the most recent image is at the top. When I choose to order by date created, I get this new thing where the icons are in horizontal rows by date and many of the files are no longer visible unless you scroll to the right. Kind of like a combo of icon and coverflow. Is it not possible to just have the icons appear in a grid as normal, but most recent ones at the top, or whatever ordering method I choose?
I am re-organizing after a move to mac and decided to move all my data to a raid array while keeping my OS's on a separate drive.
i am seeing that this is more difficult in practice than it sounds.
for instance, i have all sorts of folders such as Music or Screenshots or Pictures or Movies etc, etc, etc and i am wondering if I should just keep ALL of this dat on the separate drive and RE-POINT all my software that uses a database to that folder on the other drive.
I was trying to find a way for items in a folder to get sorted by recently added. In other words, I would like a certain folder to sort everything in the order I throw them in. The problem is that all the items have different dates, names, size, etc., so the usual sorting methods don' achieve what I want and I would prefer not to have to modify the item names cause it gets confusing with all the items I have. The way the folder behaves by default also starts to fail when you reach the maximum window size, it starts to put some items on the right side and others on the bottom, in no particular order. I was thinking of using a Smart Folder or Automator, but nothing I've tried seems to work.
Whenever I open the programs-section of the finder, the windows is always slightly positioned off-screen (about 1/3rd is out of the screen to the right). When I drag the window to a new (so I can see all) position, it always jumps back whenever I close and reopen the finder. Any fix for this?
Also, is there a way to get the icons to auto-arrange themselves like I can setup in Windows?
I can't seem to get my applications folder to remember to arrange itself by name. I can change it while in the folder... but when I exit it and go back into it; it's reset to the way it was...
Also, upon completion of setting up my MBP, an error message occurred notifying me that something didn't complete or go through... however I can click somewhere in one of my folders to go back to it. Does anybody know what this is? I can't remember what it said earlier...
Finally... in Mail... is there a way to get rid of the "RSS feeds" thing? Also, I have an AOL account and I can't stand the fact that every time I open mail a new subfolder appears called "Saved IM's"... why? I have never used it and keep deleting it. Also... now there's "mailboxes" with just inbox, sent, and trash.... which is nice but then also my email address has its own menu under it?
Macbook air, Mavericks os. since I've updated to mavericks, Ive noticed the MacIntosh Harddrive Icon on the desktop (which does change location), is covering icons of images underneath it. This is not only unusual, but it makes viewing the filename difficult. Why is this happening....it makes no diference how I arrange the icons on the desktop, one ends up under the HD Icon.
