How can OS X mount and unmount a harddrive by its UUID (as displayed in disk utility)?
I know how to mount a volume by its disk identifier (e.g. disk0s3), but it may change after a reboot. Thus a wrong volume may be ejected.
I need a reliable method to mount/unmount a specific hard drive connected via USB.
I have to do a back up (I'm cutting in Avid) on this FAT32 volume (for interoperability it is formatted this way), but I can't mount it via the Disk Utility or the 'mount' command in Terminal (it doesn't list the device, despite seeing it in Disk Utility - the volume is greyed out).The drive is connected via Firewire 400 and 800, USB is not available (to few slots).

I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.
I have modified a kext and the OS does not start. Even with Command + S. So I have to restore the original backup.When I insert the Leopard DVD and Start Terminal from Utilities menu, and try to mount the drive, it says: Unknown special file or file system.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI decided not to use just one partition with my disk because i wanted to separte important documents from the OS and apps so reformated my disk with 2 partitions 1 for OS and apps and one for docs. I also wanted to keep the docs partition secure so it was my intention to use filevault... however it learned that file vault would only work on my whole disk and not on a sigle volume. At least thats the only option i get when i go to "Turn on FileVault" in the Security and Privacy of system preferences. So what i tried next was to reformat the "docs" partition i have created using the Mac OS extended (journaled) encrypted option. This option seemed to work but after formating the partition, I could not mount the volume.
Question is: what is the best way for what i am trying to do and how to do it.
a) is there a way to use FileVault on a single volume instead of the whle disk?
b) alternatively, how to format an encrypted partition and mount it?

I have my Mac setup so that the OS is on one hard drive and the Users directory is on another. This setup has worked fine without any problems for the last four months.Though over the last two weeks I've been getting kernel panics (the grey curtain, telling you to restart) frequently. Some days I have been having as many as three or four, other days it's fine.The kernel panics don't appear to form any sort of pattern, they have occurred when the machine is idle, when shutting down, waking up from standby etc

("Downloads Folder" is on "Data" Volume) Restarted the machine and now all aliased folders which refer to the "Data" volume have a question mark overlay rendered on their icon.It's not possible to mount/unlock the "Data" disk through disk utility a. The "Data" volume is, according to DiskUtility quite full (only 16MB left). I have the suspicion that this small amount of space left in combination with the encryption causes some trouble.What to do?Â

Last night I encountered a problem with my seagate FreeAgent external HD/D. I right-clicked on the desktop icon to eject it as per usual and once the icon had vanished I pulled out the USB cable. However, I then got a message saying that I didn't eject the device properly and might have lost data, etc. When I plugged the external drive in this morning I found that it wouldn't mount. I am in a state of panic at the moment because it is almost 150gb of data that I really did not want to lose! I read in one of the previous threads that this is a common problem amongst macs but I wasn't able to discern if this was a permanent error and if it means my drive is shafted. I ran disk utility and this is what it came up with:

I tried to repair it using disk utility but it wasn't able to do it. I am now using the demo of Data Rescue II to do a thorough scan which will take several hours but I'm wondering what options I have. Are there any other mac tools I can use? I am a total newbie when it comes to macs having only made the transition from PC to Mac several months ago and I don't know what tools I can utilize to fix this problem, if it even can be fixed.
The only other volume on the disk does mount, and when starting from this second volumes, the primary volume does mount.. From other startup volumes on my second internal HD, the volume does mount. Disc utility repair, TechToolPro, and DiskWarrior all OK.No Menu Bar on Finder, can't access files from Finder icon in Dock. Safari won't open but Firefox OK. Tried zapping PRAM, repairing permissions.

The hard has lost it's volume and will not mount and I've tried some other programs and I can see the files but I can't get them off because every program I've tried isn't free and won't let me copy them off. I've tried looking for one but I can't seem to find a good one. I just want to copy off the files and then I'll wipe the drive and fix the parition.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 43GB available on a 120GB drive on my MacBook base model and I'm trying to partition via BootCamp.I'm trying to allocate 32GB to the Windows partition but I keep getting the following error message:Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.Now I've backed up my disk and launched disk utility, and try to follow above directions here but the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) area is grayed out and when I click apply after highlighting the MacBook are (in blue), it errors out and says the disk is out of space.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI probably already have the answer to this question myself but I wanted to make sure, and also have a follow-up query based on the responses.The system board was replaced last year after a nasty scrap between a cup of black coffee and my MBP (you will have immediately deduced who won).Today I noticed that many of the plist and plist.lockfile files within my Library/Preferences/ByHost folder have duplicates, albeit with different UUIDs in the filename. The dates pretty much tie up with when the system board was replaced so my assumption is that the UUID changed with the new hardware.
Q1) Would someone be so kind as to verify my assumption, or make a loud raspberry if my assumption is erroneous?
On the basis that the response from our wonderful community is: "Your assumption is correct Livebox, you have not gone mad, and you may rest-assured that the world is at peace (for now)", my additional question(s) are:
Q2a) Is it safe to delete ALL plist and plist.lockfile files that sport the old UUID?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.5.8, and I have noticed in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost that the plist files now are all suffixed with a UUID instead of my machine's mac address.
Is there a command I can run (via a Terminal session) which will return that UUID for my machine?
my usb 2.0 removable flash disk had a problem. i reformatted it and while in the process it failed. then after that my usb can't be detected by mac but i can see it in disk utility. i tried everything in disk utility. [URL] that disk2s1 when i try to verify, or even repair it something will say that ** /dev/disk2s1 could not read boot block (Permission denied) Filesystem error: verify or repair failed
i can't mount it too..when i hit the mount icon it would say try first aid on it first or verify or repair and try again. i've searched everything in the net but i can't find something.
ah..and when i insert my usb in windows (desktop) the usb will be detected but i cannot open it.. the pc will hang and i can't even get to see its properties in windows.
Is it possible to mount a hard drive without having to open up Disk Utility?I often unmount my different Hard Drives then remount them later on and I'm getting sick of having to always open Disk Utility.

I have a mac pro 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon box. Tonight I replace my 8 g memory sticks with 16g memory sticks. After rebooting my super drive will no longer mount any disk that is put in the tray. I close the tray then after several seconds the try pops back open. I have tried cleaning the drive with a cleaning disk, it does not work. No sound comes from the drive, in other words I don't hear it attempt to spin up. The super drive shows up in disk utility and under Disc Burning in system information.
View 3 Replies View RelatedBought a new 4TB external hard drive (USB 3.0). I need to use it with Time Machine. The instructions on Apple said to format as GUID. When I opened up Disk Utility to do this it started to format the drive as it normally would, and then out of no where it stopped and unmounted the drive. Now no matter what I try to do I can't mount it (even in windows).Â
If I unplug the drive and then plug it back in the "initialize" pop-up comes on screen, but even when I click Initialize it does nothing.Â
How do I get around this and format the drive?

I was surfing this site a couple of days ago when my MacBook suddenly froze up. I couldn't Force-Quit anything or do a soft restart, so I decided to just power-cycle restart (pressing the power button until it shut down, then pressing it again to start up). When I did so, my startup disk wouldn't mount.
I should give you a little background: Mine is a MacBook White early 2009, with upgraded 4GB RAM & 500GB 5400rpm Fujitsu HDD. I took the HDD from an off-the-shelf 2.5" external HDD. It has served me well for slightly over a year, and is only now giving me this problem.
I have since replaced the original HDD (which I was keeping as a emergency backup, phew) and put the problem HDD in an external FW enclosure.
I have run Disk Utility on it to try & rectify the problem. Disk First Aid says the disk is fine, but I just couldn't get it to mount. I thought I'd try to erase it and restore from my TM backup, but after I erased the disk, it still couldn't mount. What's worse, now the disk is apparently not writeable, and I can't even erase it. Disk First Aid is still telling me the disk is fine.
I've also tried booting from my SL install disk, but it won't mount the disk to install SL. It is still visible in Disk Utility, but greyed out.
Can anyone advise what I can do to recover the disk?
I can't really bring it in for a warranty exchange, cos I ripped this disk out of the original enclosure, so the enclosure is now completely busted, and obviously the warranty won't be honored. (Buying the external was cheaper than buying just the internal, and Fujitsu had a pretty OK reputation for their harddisks at that point. Could you blame me?)
So any software or hardware (or combination) solution would be great. Worst case scenario is to get a new HDD, but I'd still like to recover the use of this disk somehow.
I need some pictures from my g4 digital audio onto my macbook, so I started the power mac up in target disk mode with the firewire cable attached, and it didn't mount. I have restarted both computers, and still the disks don't show up in disk utility. Could I have a bad cable, or is something else the problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB Seagate USB HD that is about a year old. it is connected to a 2006 Macbook with a 80 GB HD. I plugged the Ext. HD into the computer and the Ext. HD started and spun and the light went on, but won't show up on the desktop where it normally shows up. When I open Disk Utility The External Hard Drive shows up and I say Verify disk and it says it is OK, I say repair disk and it says OK. I then try to mount it and it says: The Disk "Free Agent Drive" cannot be mounted.
I have all my OS X applications that come with your mac on a seperate .dmg file, that's just how it happened. I'm not sure how it happened, but when I took my computer home, it just installed like that. I bought the iMac ex-display from PC World last august and it didn't come with any documentation, reboot disks or an apple remote. They say they don't have them with them, but they obviously do.
I keep forgetting to mount the .dmg every time I reboot, because I'm a klutz and becoming old at a young age. I was wondering if there's any way to automatically have the mac mount the disk image?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWell, after using Monolingual on my iBook G4 late '04 1.2GHZ running Tiger 10.4.11 I tried to install an app from a dmg file and the image mounts but when clicked Finder relaunches (or at least seems to because it blinks off then back on as when relaunching) and the image does not open. Did I mess up the architectures? I left the architectures as marked by Monolingual and proceeded with the deletion.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am unable to get my OS 10.4 Installer DVD to mount or boot my G4, currently running OS 10.4.11, though it mounts and boots other of my Macs and I am able to boot and mount a 10.1 DVD with my current Pioneer DVR-1060 drive. I would like to run a hardware test on my mac as I recently had one of my hard drives die and just want to check everything. So does not seem to be the drive and does not seem to be the DVDs. I zapped the pram, reset the open firmware and ran diagnostics using Applejack and everything checked out okay with my current internal drive.

However Disk Utility does not see it. The drive shows up and is able to be erased and partitioned and mounted with another Macbook Pro running 10.6.8. So, the drive itself is good. how to get the drive to mount on the new Macbook Pro?Â

I previously used NTFS-3G to write to my NTFS (Boot Camp) volume. Now, I would like to can it, and just use Apple's internal read-only NTFS stuff.. But the drive refuses to mount, if I disable or remove NTFS-3G.. If I try to mount it manually in Disk Utility, it just says "The disk could not be mounted. Try running First Aid".. I tried that, and it did not work (as expected). I have tried to create an empty file with TOUCH command in the root of my NTFS drive, called "ntfs-readonly". I have also tried to put that file in a directory called ".NTFS-3G" in the root. According to this site, it should tell NTFS-3G to mount that drive with Apples read-only driver. But this failed to work as well - getting the same error as above, when trying to mount it manually.
An interresting thing is, that when NTFS-3G is running, the format of the NTFS drive reads "Windows NT Filesystem (NTFS-3G)" - fine, that sounds logical. BUT.. When NTFS-3G is disabled, the format reads "MS-DOS (FAT32)".. Which, of course, is not true. Is Apples NTFS mounter broken on my system, maybe? If so, how can I fix that? I recall, that I removed NTFS-3G and Mac Fuse manually some time ago, using this site as guidance. That involved deleting the files it was using. I was very careful, but MAYBE I deleted one or more files, that Apples internal NTFS read-only driver needed... Can somebody perhaps assist me in some way? What can I try (apart from re-installing OS X using my Time Machine backup..)..?
I thought having a Macbook and a PC and keeping data sync'd between the two would be easy, or so Apple et al would have me believe. So far I've not only found out that their IP over FireWire, the only feasible way to transfer the large amounts of data I have, is seriously lacking (i.e. I haven't been able to get it to work!) but also that when I try to ease my woes by connecting the Macbook as a FireWire drive in Target Disk Mode, it fails to deliver again. The first time I connected my Macbook to my PC over FireWire in Target Disk Mode, it popped up in My Computer no bother. Alright, so the only partition I could access was my XP partition on the Macbook (thank goodness I have that or I'd be right up the creek!), but I suppose it's to be expected, what with OS X and Windows having different file systems ETCETERAH.
So I'll copy all my media files to the XP partition and then copy them to my XP PC from there, I thought. Every following time I've connected in Target Disk Mode, I've received nothing but a 'removable disk' icon in My Computer which, when clicked, asks me to 'insert media'. WTF, Apple?! So not only can I not have my OS X drive show up in Windows on my PC, but now I can't even have the XP drive show up?! I didn't change anything, I didn't do anything differently, I literally just rebooted OS X to copy the files I wanted from the Apple partition to the XP one. Sorry to come across all 'angry like', it's just not the first, second, or third problem I've encountered since 'switching'. For a company who prides itself on how its products 'just work', it's becoming an eye-opening experience. However, I understand it's probably something I've done incorrectly, rather than the fault of Apple or Microsoft. So I ask you, what am I doing wrong?
