OS X :: Finding Spaces Configuration For Different Setups
Dec 17, 2010
I've looked around but the search didn't provide me and answer so here I am asking this:
I own a MB and I generally have 3 different setup configurations:Mobile (MB screen)
Office (MB screen + 22" TFT)
Living Room (MB screen + TV)
So the thing is, is there a way I can make OSX know what configuration i'm using automatically? Let's say, based on the number and resolution of the screens?

I need to setup a new version of gtk and glib2 on my Mac, but the only versions I can find are a bit stale (gtk 2.14) or don't seem to include a newer glib version.

've been a PC person since forever but more and more I've come in need of a mac, mainly for editing and the use of Final Cut Pro and After Effects. My PC has served me well but was slowing and so when I saw a cheap G5 for sale I snapped it up. Now I'm aware it's the older PowerPC style and it doesn't support the latest and greatest apps but FCP 6 will do me fine. However I have some hardware setup questions I can't seem to find a simple answer to anywhere so I turn to you for.
My G5 came with a rather nice 23' HD Cinema display that I'm currently using, however in my old PC setup I used 3 monitors, 2 identical ones and a TV via DVI-HDMI so I could edit over the two windows and monitor my work on the telly.

My wife is a professional photographer. Her business is growing and so is the time she spents behind her computer (Imac) Photoshopping . She is complaining about the speed. So we are planning an upgrade to a Mac Pro combined with a Eizo screen.
I have some questions about the configuration. We are looking for something which generates speed. It has to be reasonable in price in three years we will buy another one, so upgradable is not that important.
The image size off the RAW photo's is 25MB. But in the coming three years will grow for example to 50MB when a new camera is bought. For a project dozens of these images have to be processed.

I am used to using virtual desktops on Linux (Gnome, KDE, etc) where it shows a miniature version of all your desktops in the bottom right corner at all times. You can directly click on one of the desktops to switch to it.

I have a simultaneous dual-band AirPort Extreme base station running software version 7.5 and can't find the software install disk it came with. I reinstalled Snow Leopard onto my mini and it has AirPort Utility 5.4.2. When I try to connect to the AEBS, I get a pop-up stating that a newer version of AirPort Utility is needed, but I can't find anything newer than 5.4.2 on the Apple download site. Does anyone know if Apple has the AirPort Utility software that works with this hardware/software available somewhere?

It would also be useful to have things such as my calendar, address book and iphotos shared between my machines too.
I'm just wondering what people think is the best way to do this and whether there are any cool applications out there which could make this integration easier.

these options in the Security Preferences screen.
Firewall. Does the average person need this activated?
Firevault. Is this necessary for all?
I don't have the Missing Manual for Mavericks yet. So I often look up topics in the MM for Lion. He mentions something on page 510 about "closing the backdoor" so hackers can't 'Ping" an idle or sleeping computer. The Security Preferences in Mavericks don't seem to address this. Has the new OS got built-in security for this. Wiping an HD clean, installing fresh OS and then restoring preferences from a TImeMachine backup.
my HD that DiskWarrior detected. From the error messages, I erase the HD and install a new system. would it be save to Restore my old Network and Kechains and System Preferences from my TM backup?

I'm an interactive designer and have a pretty sweet deal lined up. My client is going to be purchasing me one of the three computer setups. I need your help in determining which would be best. 8x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
or
OPTION 2
Stock Quad-Core Mac Pro
One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor
3GB (three 1GB) memory
640GB hard drive
18x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB
or
OPTION 3
iMac 27-inch
2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

What are you guys using them for? I'm thinking strongly about going this route and using one for streaming my multi-sample library and audio files into Logic Pro and as an interim quick-bounce-while-composing drive before I dump the project file to an external drive.
Anybody using the Intel X-25M G2 (160GB, currently using for apps, OS,m and a most-used samples) with an OCZ Vertex 120GB? That would be more than enough internal storage for me as I make use of my external HDD via ExpressCard->eSATA all the time.

I've been Promac based for years and now run a Macbook Pro for mobility around the office and house.I'm getting flustered running 2 systems in tandem along with 1 wife and 3 kids! Currently before I leave the desktop I put a copy of my current work on my TimeCapsule then pull it down to the laptop, work then visa versa. I would like my work folders, photos, and music to be on both machines. I see programs like Drop Box and Chronosyc, the language on the Chrnosync website make is appear fairly complicated, can I ask if anyone might spare a moment to cover their expieriences of them or any other setups?

I'm running Mac OS 10.5.6. When I plug in the external monitor to my MacBook Pro, I setup Firefox and Entourage on my notebook monitor and Photoshop on the external. I also move the Apple menu bar to the external (since PS is my main app I like having the menu bar close by). Photoshop doesn't present a problem because I'm able to switch the layout for different workspaces (laptop alone or laptop and external), but I find that Firefox and Entourage don't remember their positions.
For example, my current setup is dual monitors as mentioned above. When I get home and power up the notebook, I'll launch all the same apps. Firefox is just barely within view hanging off the left side of the screen so I'll grab the window and drag it over so I can access the green button (not sure what this is called). Entourage displays just fine. When I get back to work the next day and plug in the external, Firefox displays on the external with the window sized to fit the notebook monitor) and I'll just drag it over. Entourage loads into the external as maximized and I'll drag it over and click the green button.

I never really bothered using SPACES before - thought it was kinda pointless really.
Then the other day I messed around with it - and now I get it It really is a nice feature!
The only thing that worries me, is whether it is a huge resource hog ? Activity Monitor doesnt really show how much cpu it takes...

I've been upgrading my mp1,1 recently, and I'm now wondering what would be the best ram configuration. I'm thinking of getting a minimum of 8 GB. I don't need to max out the machine or anything. It's just that I currently have 2x512MB + 2x1GB = 3GB and I am thinking I should ditch those and get nice matching sticks with more capacity. A few general questions: I hear the mp1,1 takes 667 MHz ram, but can support 800 MHz sticks (it will just run them at 667).
Any purpose in getting 800 (i.e. compatibility with more machines in case I upgrade in the future), or should I just go for the cheapest? I've heard of triple channel ram (i.e. 3 sticks per riser) - does the mp1,1 support that or is it for newer machines only? I've also heard that using 4 sticks on a single riser is the fastest config (or was it 2 sticks per riser?). I'm thinking of getting 4 GB sticks. Can I use 8 GB sticks? Worth it? Basically, I'm wondering what the general consensus is on the ultimate memory config for mp1,1.

I am planning to buy a NEW MAC PRO optimized for my purposes, which are: editing, with Final Cut Studio, independent movies originated on DV format. I'm primarily concerned with having a system maximized for speed in terms of real time editing as well as rock solid stability. So, my primary questions revolve around these issues:
(keep in mind cost is an issue for me - the total for tower and internal hardware should not exceed $5000)
First, is there much of a speed difference in Final Cut Studio between the 2.8 gHZ and the 3.0 gHZ processors - enough to justify the $800 price tag?
Second, I want to have plenty of storage space but I'm finding it difficult deciding on which hard drives (brand, speed, etc) are best for my purposes. (And for cost reasons I don't want to order the stock drives from Apple) Again, I would stress dependability and speed. My initial idea was to get three to four 750 gb or one tb drives. I thought I could have one drive be the system drive and the remaining two to three be raid 0 - arrayed for media storage. Is this a feasible storage configuration? Any consensus as to which brand and model drives out there are best for speed and dependability? And how about the Raid 0 setup - does this sound good, or any other recommendations? I know this is risky as far as data loss, so I was thinking of getting an equivalent amount of external drive space to back up to.
Third, I am wondering about RAM. Again I don't want to spend the $ to buy RAM from Apple. Two questions then about RAM: 1) how much realistically do I need for speedy editing? I was thinking 8 gbs - is this too much? not enough? 2) I need recommendations on which RAM brand and type to buy? And where should I buy it from? Again, dependability is all-important.
Fourth, is the 2600 graphics card sufficient for my purposes? Or will spending the extra $ on the 8800 be worth it? I will probably be connecting only 2 monitors to it.
Fifth, do I need any additional capture cards or some other video card? In the past I've always just captured video from my camera through firewire.

I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1. I use it for 95% Web Dev, and 4% print, and 1% hi-res grand format print. Now, I am working for a new company who has my focus on probably 80% hi-res print work, 10% grand format print, and 10% web. I currently am just using a C2Duo Macbook Pro, but am going to want a desktop, as the laptop just isn't cutting it. It's got 4 gigs of ram and a 7200rpm 500 gig drive, but I still get beachballs and spinners constantly. What is the setup for a Mac Pro for hi-res print? I am thinking the single CPU version would be fine, with a SSD system drive and then just various drives for files? Better to set up a hardware striped raid to run files off of? Also, for something like this 4 gigs of RAM in the laptop doesn't seem to cut it. Would this be an 8gig minimum type setup? I'm really just tired of beachballs and long render times when trying to manipulate large files in illustrator and photoshop. I don't know if the company will let me spend the money on a Mac Pro, so if not, I am guessing that an i7 27" imac would be the 2nd choice, albeit a huge downgrade from a properly setup Mac Pro, and then a Mac Mini next?

I've been playing around with my spaces setup and I'd like to know if it's possible to unlock 5 spaces in a row (columns), as opposed to the current limit of 4 columns and x amount of rows. Maybe I'm just being picky but, when it comes to spaces. I like being able to just move horizontally from beginning to end without getting lost when additional rows are attributed.

I've two Macs, a Mini and a Macbook. I've had no issues with wireless at all, but today when using my Macbook to connect to my network for the first time, I had a message pop up that I've never seen before and I'm not sure why. I checked the MAC address of my mini and it is not the one described in the warning message. I changed my wireless password immediately and do so regularly anyway ( weekly basis ) but the machine with the unknown [to me] MAC address is still connected when I look in the Attached Devices info pane in my router.
