OS X :: Using SPACES - A Cpu /RAM Hog?
Sep 21, 2009
I never really bothered using SPACES before - thought it was kinda pointless really.
Then the other day I messed around with it - and now I get it It really is a nice feature!
The only thing that worries me, is whether it is a huge resource hog ? Activity Monitor doesnt really show how much cpu it takes...

I've been playing around with my spaces setup and I'd like to know if it's possible to unlock 5 spaces in a row (columns), as opposed to the current limit of 4 columns and x amount of rows. Maybe I'm just being picky but, when it comes to spaces. I like being able to just move horizontally from beginning to end without getting lost when additional rows are attributed.

How do I override Spaces? I love my spaces but hate being brought back to a Space when a task finishes in a space that I'm not in. Is there a way to override this?

I'm curious if anyone has tried out Spaces with Dual Monitors yet?I'm not sure if it will matter or not, would kind of be cool to be able to specify which space goes to which monitor.....I have a New iMac with extra 20" LCD and will be upgrading to Leopard tonight, so I guess I'll know then...just wondering what to expect.

However, I found a problem. I have 16 spaces. But the keyboard shortcuts only allow me to jump to Spaces 1 - 9 with (Ctrl or ^ - (Space No.)) For example, if I were to jump to Space 8 from any space I would press ^ - 8. However, how do I use the shortcut for 10 - 16? I tried pressing ^ - 10. But it simply brings me back to Space 1 as it recognizes the first digit only.

i was wondering if their is any way to use spaces independent of each monitor,
meaning that if space 1 was on monitor 1, and space 2 was on monitor 2, i could switch monitor 2 to space 3 while keeping monitor 1 on space 1.
i feel that this will be a better way to use spaces with multiple monitors, rather than many extended desktops.say you want internet work on one space, then different word documents on 2 other spaces. if you could switch between those documents while keeping the internet on the same space.i know that this can be sort of accomplished be setting apps to appear in every window, but that is a hack and annoying solution.this would be a great addition to 10.3 - more customization!

I have Spaces set up to "switch directly to a space" using command+# For some reason, however, Spaces will only switch directly to Space # No matter what applications I have chosen for Spaces 2, 3, and 4, Spaces will NOT directly switch to them using the shortcut. I can still switch to them manually with command+arrow keys, though. It doesn't matter what application I choose as Space 1... I can directly switch to it. But the other 3 spaces just won't allow me to directly switch. (Yes, there's applications open and active in each of those spaces.) Anybody encounter this or know what's up?

I am trying to set up Spaces. Pressing F8 and moving some things around. I can switch spaces via F8 and via the menu bar applet. However, I have not found a way to get the Ctrl-arrow keys to Ctrl-number keys to have any effect, even after playing around with all the settings.

I have my MacBook Pro hooked up to an external monitor, and was wondering if I can set up spaces so that I can have spaces only operate on the external monitor. Let me explain - lets say I have my browser or a game always open. On the other hand, I only need to look at either my iTunes or iChat on the other screen. Can I have it so that when I switch spaces the monitor which the browser/game is operating on is unaffected, but the other screen switches between iChat in one space and iTunes in another. Is this possible? I tried setting the programs to "every space" but this didn't really make it work the way I'd like. it works for safari, but not for my game. I think that's because the game is in full screen mode. Played around a little more and got it working.

It wasn't until I got my new MPB that I realized how much I use Spaces on a daily basis, when I had my whitebook.
I've set up Spaces on my new uMBP but can't find a way to "view all my spaces." You know, the overview look of spaces, when you can see all your spaces at a glance and click to switch on whichever space you wanna enter.
Well, I can't for the life of my figure out how to set up a keyboard shortcut for this. Back on my whitebook it was always set to F10, but looking at the new layout of buttons on the top row of the keyboard, there are some buttons I'd like to leaver untouched.
F1+F2: Screen brightness controls I'd like to leave untouch since they're obviously useful.
F3: This is Expose right? Giving me a view of all open windows. Well, can't I just do this already by moving 4 fingers downward on the trackpad? If that's the case, which I think it is I wouldn't mind assigning F3 a different shortcut, like Spaces. But how?
F4: Dashboard. On the whitebook it was always F12, guess it'll just take some getting used to.
F5+F6: Backlit keyboard dimmers, i'm fine leaving thouse as is.
F7-F12: Controls media with the back, play/pause, next button which I love & the sound controls which I don't mind.
In System Prefs. in Spaces I'll set "Activate Spaces" to F3 but still F3 will do Expose. I'm not sure how to change this.
& I have no idea what secondary mouse click or middle mouse button is...i'm guessing this has to do with mighty mouse? Me no have one, just using the trackpad..

Is Spaces actually creating a larger virtual desktop or is it just a single desktop and hiding/showing apps based on the selected space?
What resources are being consumed, if anything, by adding spaces? Main memory? Video ram? Nothing?

I've been using spaces ever since I bought my macbook pro and found it very useful. But after installing snow leopard, I haven't been able to use it properly. I currently have spaces enabled and have 2 spaces... when I activate spaces to show all spaces, I used to be able to switch between them by clicking on the space that I wanted to move to... however, I can't do that now. Every time I want to switch between the spaces, I also go back to the one I was already on.

I've got my spaces set up in a very straightforward and intuitive way (for me at least). I've got Internet in one, word processing in one, media in one, and Mail/Address Book/iCal in one.
Lately, though, it seems like none of the apps will stay in their assigned spaces. iTunes will end up in another space; Mail will end up in the wrong place; and clicking on Mail will bring up iCal in the wrong space.

I'm late to the game with Snow Leopard and just upgraded today. The very first thing I noticed is that I can no longer active Spaces and then choose which Space I want with a number key. For example, in Leopard I had F19 mapped to display the Spaces view and then click '2' on the numberpad to display the second space. I used this A LOT and it was extremely fast and useful for me. But now with Snow Leopard, F19 will display the Spaces view, but clicking any numbers on the keypad doesn't do anything. I checked the preferences, but the only option is to select a key combination (ex: ^ Number Keys). I want to be able to hit *just* the number key.

Having discovered spaces as a result one of the threads down below and loving them, we wonder if it is possible to have a different desktop picture in each space? Done a few searches, know widgets won't go, but you might be able to "customize" the space a bit... Don't know why, but would just like to if I could.

Another random issue I have been having is that every now and then is with spaces. When navigating between spaces, the 4 window icon comes in the middle of the screen to indicate which space I am in, however occasionally this does not disappear, so I am stuck with the spaces icon in the middle of the screen. This is annoying especially when watching something, any idea why this maybe happening? How can I stop it?

OK, I've found most of what I need to configure Lion but I can't find the preference panel to change the 'all spaces' view to the old style (where you see all the spaces or desktops placed on the screen in equal sizes). The new default 'mission control' view isn't as useful to me. I also don't see where to assign apps to a specific space. Finally, how do you get at the 'spaces' option for a hot corner?

I am trying to figure out how to use keyboard shortcuts to move from one Space to another. Online, it says it's ctrl + arrows. But when I do that, either nothing happens, or something related to the particular window I am focusing on happens (if I'm in safari, ctrl + up will take me to the top of the page it is currently displaying).

I've looked around but the search didn't provide me and answer so here I am asking this:
I own a MB and I generally have 3 different setup configurations:Mobile (MB screen)
Office (MB screen + 22" TFT)
Living Room (MB screen + TV)
So the thing is, is there a way I can make OSX know what configuration i'm using automatically? Let's say, based on the number and resolution of the screens?

I recently upgraded to 10.6.5 from 10.5.8. Ever since then I have had a problem with spaces. The problem is as follows:
When switching Spaces, there is the onscreen graphic along the bottom, telling you which space you just switched to. However, sometimes when switching spaces on SL 10.6.5, the graphic will stay there and wont disappear as it should. When it just stays there, the entire keyboard stops working because Mac OS X still thinks I am performing the Spaces switch. A logout is required.
I am running 10.6.5 with all updates applied.
I searched for this problem both on MR & on google, and although it seems that I am not the only one with the problem, I can find neither a cause, nor a solution.

I've played extensively with Spaces. Today I had 4 Spaces, with multiple Safari windows and multiple TextEdit windows open in Space #1 and in Space #3. I moved back an forth quite a bit, but then spent some time opening and closing windows only in Space #1, finally closing all Safari and TextEdit windows there.
When I pressed F8, Space #3 had no windows open! In the Dock, Safari and TextEdit were active. If I clicked either of them in the Dock, I'd switch to that application's menus and see my windows from Space #3 listed in the "Windows" menu, but the window would not actually appear anywhere in any Space if I chose it from the Windows menu.
The same with control-clicking in the Dock; the windows were listed, but would not display.
The windows for a separate application I had open only in Space #3 were also gone. I hadn't used them in any other Space.
I tried control-click-Quit on TextEdit in the Dock, knowing that I should get a "Do you want to save the changes?" prompt. It played the alert sound but showed me no TextEdit window or prompt. I couldn't view my window, save it, or Quit without saving!
There seemed to be no clean way out, until I tried collapsing all windows into Space #1 (by pressing F8 and then C) and then disabling Spaces in System Preferences. Instantly, my missing Safari and TextEdit windows reappeared in Space #1. My windows from the other application are back too.
I re-enabled Spaces and everything seems back to normal.

I have 3-4 apps open in each space. I have 6gb of ram, 2.5gb of which are in use. When I go to the spaces view (f8). It's choppy - is this normal? Well by normal I mean does anyone else have it? I also get some choppiness here and there when I jump in between spaces with ctrl+arrows. Does anyone else have this? I'm reformatting a large raid array with disk utilities, so that may be the culprit, but it really should not be, since there is no i/o from it on my main drive. I'm running 10.5.2 with the graphics update and an 8800GT.
