View 2 RepliesI have an old iBook G4 laptop and a newer iMac (OS 10.5.8). Since getting the iMac, I've neglected the laptop and so the info on it is old. I would like to synchronize these two computers and bring the laptop up to date with the iMac. Basically, I'd like to erase the laptop and then have it be a copy of the iMac. Given that I'm not very techie, how do I do this please?! And how long would it take? Thanks for any help.

I was doing some cleanup on my macbook pro, deleting old log files and suddenly the system froze. I turned off and then on the laptop and to my surprise, the Mac partition doesn't show up on bootcamp menu, and I'm taken directly to Windows.I tried booting from the install disk and repairing the disk with Disk Utility, and although all my data seems to be all right (I can see all of it from Windows), and Disk Utility did not find any errors, when I reboot (while holding the option key) only Windows shows up.

In just about any program, if I leave program running, close lid, come back in about 30 minutes, my screen will be black. I can see cursor, but when I move mouse it will "erase" some of the black screen. I've seen similar forum postings, but in those the screen is locking up -- mine does not do that. I've taken in to Genius Bar, they've run diagnostics and found no problems.
I then have to restart, but in doing so it will bring up the Guest login screen, with a completely different wallpaper than my default.
Also, there, at times, is a "hissing" sound that no one can diagnose. At first we thought it was caused by a game in which there is the sound of a waterfall, but I'm now hearing it even when the game is not being played. Super drive has been checked and no problem found.
Disk utility does not always work when trying to erase free space... I have 50 gigs of free space that I can not retrieve... I do not want to have erase my entire SSD like I did a month ago to clean up deleted files...

A friend suggested backing up only my necessary files on my Lion based MBP, wiping the disc clean (erasing), and then installing Maverick. He says it will clean out any old junk and make my MBP run really fast.

My iMac gives an error when trying to backup, so I'm trying to erase the sparsebundle and start over. Every time I try, i get an error saying "The operation cannot be completed because the item 'bands' is in use."
Any ideas on what "bands" is and how I can erase the TC? Is there a way to restore to factory settings instead of trying to erase the sparsebundles? (plural because I back up both my MB and iMac on it.

I've followed the steps to migrate the info from my work mac to my MacBook, but have copied over absolutely everything. It has meant that my original address book is now blank and I am unsure what other programs may have been affected. I am unsure whether to migrate the information back to the work mac and clean up the macbook and start again. Can someone advise me - but in layman's terms as I do not understand technical words!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an External 1 TB HDD where 250 GB of it is dedicated to Time Machine back-ups. I only have about 25 GB of space left but Time Machine won't update .. says there's not enough space. I thought that TM auto-deletes the oldest entry? Well it's not working. What should I do? Do I need to do into Disk Utility and just highlight my TM Partition and erase it then start over? There's nothing on it that I need.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the effort to use Time Machine, I want to partition my external drive. I have 500 gig external, and would like to have one partition of 480 and one around 20. This way, Time Machine will only back up onto the smaller partition, not endlessly backing up until all 500 gigs are used. The reason I need to partition without erasing is my 170 gig iTunes library. Its too large to transfer to my internal HD, and I have no other drive to store it on.
