I'm attempting to use Automator to rename picture files. I select "Make Sequential" and put the name in that I want. However, once everything is completed my pictures are not in the same order they were out of the camera. I like how my camera imports the photos in the order that I took them. Now when I look through my pictures my vacation is completely out of chronological order. How do can I set Automator so that this does not happen in the future?
I've able to get an automator service to rename a bunch of files exactly the way I want by having it "Copy Finder Items" and then Make Finder Items Sequential". But it then dumps all the renamed files on the desktop. How do I add an option for it to either create a folder to put it in or dump the files into a pre-existing folder?
I'm using Automator to rename 200 odd pictures I have taken to the date the photograph was taken. I have tried renaming them, sorting them then reloading in other applications and trying to save. I see no option in changing the name to a new name, it just adds to the existing name and the filename is now massive. I did not copy originals. There must be something I can do. I tried a program called file merger (something like that) but same sort of thing happened. I have tried around ten fee downloads.
I am very new to automator, but relatively savvy with macs and such. Having a strange problem where an Automator file action to rename a file with a sequential number is only working one time. The second time a new file drops into the folder, nothing happens. If I edit the Automator File Action, change the number to a new higher number, it will work one more time, and then not again.  The basic task is to rename a file with a new text and sequential number each time a file is dropped or saved to a folder. I am using a slide scanner, and the default image file that is saved is called 'untitled' each time. Having this work would let me automate the entire scanning process to one click...Â

I've set up an Automator to batch rename files. The renaming works fine. The problem arises when it renames a file which doesn't contain it's extension (a common MacOS practice). Is there some way to make sure it preserves the filetype? For instance, this works fine:Â
Original:
Output:
And this results in an error:Â
Original:
Output (file type has been replaced with generic "document" type)
I was doing some cleanup on my macbook pro, deleting old log files and suddenly the system froze. I turned off and then on the laptop and to my surprise, the Mac partition doesn't show up on bootcamp menu, and I'm taken directly to Windows.I tried booting from the install disk and repairing the disk with Disk Utility, and although all my data seems to be all right (I can see all of it from Windows), and Disk Utility did not find any errors, when I reboot (while holding the option key) only Windows shows up.
I want to erase all my macbook files and OS and reinstall the startup disk. I have backed up old files on separate HD. Whats the best approach for a smooth reinstall.?
I have searched around and have not been able to find an answer to my problem. I am having a very tough time trying to rename files/ folders on my late 2008 Unibody MB. This has always happened with this computer since the day I purchased it. When I am trying to rename a file or folder, I hit the return key so I can edit the name on the file. I then try to either backspace or click and drag the selected text that I want to delete. 9 out of 10 times it stops me from doing it mid deleting or adding text. It's like someone it pressing the return key as I am in the middle of editing the text. I am sure I am not pressing the trackpad or enter key accidentally. This is really getting on my nerves and I am about to throw this computer at a wall if I cannot get this fixed.
It's always allows me a different amount of time to edit before it saves it automatically. I am trying to rename over 1000 files on external/ internal hard drives so I can get the correct name for movies in plex/ iphoto. I know I can go into Get Info and edit the name in there, but that would take forever renaming a thousand files. It literally takes me 5 to 10 times just to rename one file. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this problem? I have also tried using the Apple BT keyboard and have the exact same results. Also completely random question, is there a way to disable the IR port on the MB so when I am controlling the Mac Min HTPC it doesn't keep messing with the MB by bringing up Frontrow, pausing/playing tracks? I literally have to cover the IR port with my finger just so I can use the remote on the mini.
I couldn't find it on OS X. On windows I used to right click the CD/DVD and click erase, but I don't see a similar option on my Mac. Do I need any special application for this?
For some reason my mac won't let me rename any of my files. It comes up with 'You do not have sufficient privileges to rename the item' every time I try. What's the deal?
Trying to rename a couple files in finder. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I can click on the file to bring up the cursor, and the name gets highlighted. Once I start typing however, it just takes whatever I have typed and closes the cursor edit box and I have to start all over again.
It's like I have a 2 second window to rename a file. Even if I click and the cursor comes up, if I don't type anything and watch it the cursor disappears after 2-5 seconds.
I've noticed for a few months now both in 10.5 on my PowerMac and 10.6 on my MBP that often when I click to rename a file in the finder, it will a few seconds later "un-select" the renaming as if I had hit return to finish renaming the file. I then have to click it again to finish renaming the file. Sometimes, it will do this 2-3 times before it quits exiting on its own. I wonder if Spotlight could be interfering sometimes because it often seems to do it when the window is first open and OSX is in the middle of updating the little icons to show video snapshots and the like. But I've also seen it happen after they're all updated as well. I don't recall seeing this problem on either Mac more than say 6 months ago or so. It certainly never used to do it as I've had the MBP for over 2 years now and the PowerMac for around 4 years and I would have noticed. I wonder if one of the system updates might have changed something, for example.
Has anyone else noticed any issues with renaming files being unselected like that in the middle of typing?
is there an quicker way (preferably a keyboard command) to rename a file in the finder (or on the desktop) than either command+i (which then involves another click) or a slow double click on the file itself?
Is there a way to select all the files I want to rename and then hit a button the OS will rename them all in sequence for me such as: file 1, file 2, file 3..... etc? Windows XP does this....
I have a folder with a TON of photos. I have a bunch of photos I want to put into that folder but a bunch of the filenames are the same. Normally with a few photos I would just rename the file but there's way too many.
Is there any way to rename the files or do something so I can copy the new photos into my photo folder without any overwriting going on?
when I try to update my billing information the software adds additional digits to my zip code. This is all fine and dandy, it matches to where I live. But my bank only uses the standard five digits and when it adds the additional digits they will not match up correctly despite the first five being matched. This causes an endless and stupidly frustrating cycle that I cannot solve. I tried to find a phone number to call and sort this out but of course that doesn't exist.
I have a digital photo frame to see my pictures, but it only plays photos secuencially, it can't be set on "shuffle". So if I could rename the photos with random names, then the effect would be the same, as I would be seeing them in "shuffle".
I know automator can rename files, and there are many many apps that also rename, but I haven't found one that can give the files a random name!
I feel dumb asking this, but I'm trying to create an Automator workflow to rename multiple picture files and once and I've used this tutorial... The problem is that when I right-click my files or hit "control" and click the files I want to use I don't get an option that says "more" (see second picture of tutorial) so I can get the files into Automator. In place of "more" at the bottom of the Contextual menu I have an option that says "Set Desktop Picture". How can I get my files into Automator??
I have about 60 gigs of music. Each file is named "artistname - song name". How can I take the artist name out of all of them without timing my clicking to rename them. Also, I found that quite a few cds are actually named like "artist.name.song.name" for some reason. Now windows lets me push the tab key and will let me keep going without using the mouse which is way less time consuming. Is there a way I can do that on a Mac? Will automator work for what I am doing?
I have a couple of mp3's that have the wrong name (same they are one song, but really another).
I have easily changed the name of the files, but notice when I click and select more info they still have the old, incorrect names (which will show up in the scrolling data on my stereo).
I can't for the life of me figure out how to change the "title" information so that it mirrors the name of the mp3.
I am looking for the solution to batch rename multiple avi files simply. In iphoto, I just select a bunch of image files and using the ctrl+Shift+CMD keyboard shortcut, I input the name something like 'boat_trip_kids' I get the files renamed instantly wiith or without the suffix of a number.Thing is, how to do for vdo files ?I read a totorial and then tried using automator to do this but I have to input the name_of_the_file in the script construction. That's ok for hundreds of files but I will have many names to use for naming of small groups of files and this won't be practical. Is there some way I can achieve this in automator?
I am looking for a script to do the following:I have different files in various folders and subfolders that I wish to rename. So I need a script to search for files in all folders and subfolders of my external drive and find all files ending in .doc.Then I need each file to be renamed as "report.doc". (there is only one file per subfolder so there is no danger of having two files with the same name
