OS X :: Mounting DVD Image Auto Opens Finder?
Aug 15, 2009
I'm relatively new to OS X and this is probably an easy question for most...
When I mount a DVD movie image, finder is auto opened for that image and I see the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders.
Is there a way to NOT have that finder window auto pop up every time?

how do you selectively turn on and off auto-mounting of drives? I have two drives, 1 for boot with docs etc, and the other for CCC clone back up. But both mount up on start-up. I'd be nice to only have the boot drive mount only. So I dont accidently copy stuff to the clone/back up drive. And if I want to clone to it I can use Disk Utility to manually mount.

I've got a spare boot partition on one of my media drives so I could run diagnostics with it. I use the other partition constantly so it's always plugged into my computer. Now the problem is that whenever I use spotlight things from the backup boot clone will appear in my results and I can't open up the wrong copy. I don't want to put it on the spotlight privacy list because that just deletes the spotlight index on that clone.

I have a number of volumes on my computer and assorted drives, some of which I use very rarely, and I'd like to keep these from being mounted automatically, just to reduce the clutter in my sidebar.
Years ago there was a method of disabling the auto-mount feature of certain volumes, but I haven't the vaguest idea of how to do it now -- if in fact it can be done.
I've ordered Snow Leopard, but am still using 10.5.8 on a Mac Pro.

I would like to have OS X only mount my system (duh!) and Time Machine volume, but not my Bootcamp hard drive (system is in bay #1, Bootcamp in #2, Time Machine in #3) upon boot. Right now I simply right-click the Bootcamp volume and eject it, but is there any way to tell OS X to ignore that drive by default ?

So far I've downloaded Toast 10 Titanium, because I heard that I need it to assist me with this, but basically what my problem is, is that I have a program that needs a CD to run it, but instead of a CD I have .iso images. Basically I need to know how to mount the .iso images onto my desktop as a CD so I can run my program successfully.

I created an ISO9660 DVD image using mkisofs on my Debian box, and transferred it over the network to my G4 using ftp, instead of burning to DVD, since the G4 does not read +R media. Having transferred the file, I found that I was unable to mount it using "hdiutil mount dyn-fxpbfd2d1.iso", getting "hdiutil: mount failed - not recognized". Running "file dyn-fxpbfd2d1.iso" correctly gives "dyn-fxpbfd2d1.iso: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data 'BFD2_DVD1'". I get the correct sum with MD5 so it is not getting corrupted. Why on earth can't Mac OS X mount the iso? I have experience with other BSD systems. Is there an equivalent to the mdconfig command to create a vnode, rather than the horribly inexpressive hdiutil mount command?

I have my iTunes library hanging off an AEBS and if I start iTunes before mounting the disk on the AEBS, iTunes doesn't know where the library is and often reverts back to a default library location of user/music/itunes/itunesmusic. Is there any way to get this drive to mount automatically? Either through OS X or iTunes?

I use my iMac (10.9.3) at home to Sync with my iPhone (7.1.1) to keep a full backup copy. I have the setting "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" active, and up to recently this worked nicely. However, I think since the update to iTunes 11.2.x there seems to be a problem:
- when I am not at home, I use my MBP (also 10.9.3 and iTune 11.2.2) to charge the iPhone.
- in contrast to earlier versions of iTunes, connecting the iPhone to the MBP causes iTunes to open. It is NOT possible to sync because the iPhone is connected to the iTunes library on the iMac.
- when I disable the iTunes option "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" on the MBP, the next time I connect the iPhone to the iMac iTunes does not open. And when I open it manually and "mount" the iPhone, the iTunes option "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" is disabled. It seems that the iTunes option "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" is now stored on the iPhone?

Is it possible to make CD image and copy it to the harddisk and mount it as though it was a CD - so that programs requirering to read from CD would know?
I have some software (legally purchased!) that I use frequently and I would like not be required to carry the CD with me all the time - plus my PB is noisy when accessing the CD compared to the harddrive.

Been trying to create a CD image mounted on my Desktop, as to load the program it needs to know that the CD is in the optical drive of the MacBook Air. But the program doesn't actually use the CD, its just verifying that I own a copy. Is there anyway I could start the program without actually having the CD in my drive? Anyway of making the Computer think that the CD is actually present, such as mounting the CD image on the Desktop?

I recently downloaded Transmission, and whenever I open the program, the disc image mounts on the desktop. I can't eject it until I quit the program, and then it always pops back up when I reopen the program.

Safari used to let me drag an image from a webpage to the finder and have the dragged file be saved as an actual image but now all that's saved is a webloc file. I want the image saved, not a reference to the image's URL - do I now have to always use "save as" to save it?Â
I can understand Safari creating a webloc file if I dragged the site icon from the location bar to the finder, but to make the default behavior for dragging things that are parts of a page (not the page itself) as webloc files seems like a HUGE step backwards for usability.Â
Does anyone know if there's, say, a key to hold when dragging to avoid saving a webloc file or a defaults command or something to make Safari revert back to sane draging behavior?

I've been using OSX since it first came out but one thing I still don't understand is how you determine where a new finder window will appear.
I recall someone once saying open a window, press CTRL then close the window and the next window will appear in the same spot as the now closed window. That doesnt work, nor does pressing command or any other combination I have tried.

How do I get image files to stop auto-saving in Quicktime format?
When I save an image file, it saves in QuickTime format. I don't have PhotoShop. I have preview, or digital camera software. The QuickTime thing is creating problems for me and I don't know how to change it. It seems to keep reverting.
I use Virtual Response, an email software program (terrible, but that's another story) used by PR people. It will only let me upload a logo as jpg, tif, gif. I received one that's .eps... I found online freeware that will convert .eps to .jpg, but it always saves the .jpg as QuickTime format, which the email software refuses to upload.

When I open Finder , the window is often too narrow to view all my icons and i have to either resize and realign the icons or use my scroll wheel to find a file. I would like to be able to set a default size so the windows open wider than the preset. How do i do that.

I don't know when started to happen, but when I open a window of Finder, and click in the left sidebar to see what is in Desktop, it didn't show in the right panel, it open a Terminal window. If I click Applications, or Music, it works good, but not with Desktop. I already installed Lion again 3 times, but when restoring from Time Machine, it starts to doing that.

When view folder through finder and bumping up the size of the icons it makes the window wider so I need to use the horizontal scroll bar to see all the items. This really does not make much sense and I would rather have what it does in iPhoto, the images get bigger and it just pumps the list down (makes the vertical scroll longer etc.). I hope this makes sense, I can not seem to find a setting to change it however.

I am having a strange problem with image thumbnails not appearing in Finder. I am editing some very large TIF files on a Macbook that is running Lion. These images are edited on an external drive, and when I hook the drive up to my main iMac, which is running Leopard, the new images I have created in Lion do not have thumbnails. The only way that they will appear is if I open the images in Photoshop and just resave them on the machine running Leopard. This method poses a problem because each image takes about 5-8 minutes to open, and another 5-8 to save. I have hundreds of images and don't have the time to do that to each one.Â

I just reinstalled OS X last night after upgrading my hard drive. All I've done is install all the software that was on my previous hard drive (didn't migrate or anything, fresh install of everything).
However, when ever I click on a Stack and click "Open in Finder", Apple Loops Utility loads instead of the stack folder!
How do I get rid of this? I've never experienced this before - and haven't installed any cracks or modified Finder yet.

A couple OS's ago I remember if you opened a finder window on your desktop and if the column view was open it would attempt to create a preview, making your system completely useless until that preview was generated. It seems that this has been mostly addressed in Leopard, but still exists somewhat. But I've now discovered sadly another place where it exists and it has just cost me an hour of uploading time. getting info on idisk. I was uploading a large photoshop file on my idisk, 2GB, and I had 2 minutes left.
I accidentally did command I on a file on my idisk directory thinking it was my local directory. The file I got info on was 1.4GB.. it's now stuck trying to generate a preview image for that damn photoshop file and my poor 2GB upload that was 2 minutes away has apparently decided it was less important to finish uploading and to generate this damn preview! Which probably entails downloading the whole thing first.
