I have a new MBP and every time I want to create a folder or move a file or folder, it requires me to provide a password. How do I disable this? I'll never get any work done if I have to provide a password every time I want to do something.

I created a password protected folder in Snow Leopard. I created a new blank disk image with 128-bit encryption. Now I can mount the image, enter my password and: Access to secret files!
Question: I selected the disk image and deleted it. A password was not necessary...is this true? Can anyone just delete the disk image without entering a password?
When I open my "Popular" bookmarks folder, can I create a folder within it that is password protected (in other words you have to enter a password to open that folder and see the bookmarks within)?

I use my Time Capsule to back up my laptop (Time Machine) and also as a networked hard drive. In the root directory of Time Capsule a folder called 'Data' is created to store the Time Machine backup. I can't seem to create folders next to the Data folder? I can't only create new folders within the Data folder. Is this normal?

I had this problem on previous OS with Entourage. RCN said it was Apple. Apple said it was Entourage. Switched to Apple Mail now and getting same problem Apple says Under Pref-settings-advanced Use Authenticated Pop, instead of Password-but this doesn't work at all. I'm new here but hoping I can find some helpful information for a new problem I have with OS X. Earlier today, I noticed that my Transmission was failing to download some torrents I was snatching. Transmission couldn't create the folders I was telling it to create for new CDs in my MUSIC folder. When I looked into the problem, I noticed that I no longer had the option to create new folders and several other modification options. I created a new folder on the desktop and dragged it into the misbehaving MUSIC folder and my MacBook asked me for my password to "authenticate". What's going on? I have not encountered this issue before and it is only effecting the MUSIC folder; all of the sub-folders are functioning correctly.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer apps and files from iBook G4, 10.4.11 to MacBook 10.6.2. The apps transferred and work great, except for iPhoto. I am still working on that one. The photos are in the MacBook, but I think I need to drag them into iPhoto. (?) The bigger concern is that once I found my transferred files in Users, I could not open any of the files without using my password - every time, every file. Further, even after opening the files, I cannot trash any of them without, again, using my password. Is there any way to get around this?
I tried not to use a different password when setting up the transfer, but Migration Assistant would not allow me to use the same one.
I bought my current imac in late 07, I have the 2.0 20" with 1GB ram (don't know why I have upgraded) anyway, it seemed my mac was getting slower over time and I didn't really think anything of it. Its my first mac and I figured it was just like a PC in that hardware wares out. But the problem with the slowness wasn't the mac, it was GOOGLE! I downloaded google desktop about 2 months after i got the mac and its been on ever since. I rarely ever used it, only when spotlight failed to do a good enough job. So I finally opened up activity monitor to look at my ram usage (I am thinking about upping) with all these apps open (FCP, PS, etc) and I notice my cpu is being 50% used.
So I change to view all apps and it appears googledesktopdae and MDS (spotlight) were using 20-30% of my cpu! I finally got rid of it after reading a bunch of forums. Apparently even if you uninstall GD, its process google desktop still stays on your mac and runs. Anyway I don't know how much it has been using while I didn't even realize but in the last 45 minutes since I fully got it removed my computer has been a "screamer!" Does anyone else have this installed? is it using much of your CPU? BTW to fully remove it follow these steps:
1. Delete the google desktop like you normally do any other program
2: add these files to your trashcan:
/Library/Google: delete entire folder
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins: delete GoogleGadget.webplugin and GoogleOneClikPluginDeluxe.plugin
/Library/LaunchAgents: delete com.google.Desktop.Agent.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons: delete com.google.Desktop.Daemon.plist, com.google.Desktop.StatUploader.plist, and com.google.GoogleML.plist
3. Then STOP the fallowing processes:
GoogleDesktopDae
MDS
MDworker
Then you can permanently delete the google files. Note that you must top the above processes before you empty your trashcan or else your mac wont let you permanently delete them.
I have my Time Machine hooked up to a Time Capsule and it seems that Time Machine is backing up an excessive amount of data throughout the day. Normally the backups are just 5-10 MB, however it seems that once or twice a day it backs up 2-3 GB worth of data. I don't do much saving/creating/modifying of files during the day. just web-based programs, iTunes (no downloads), etc.

This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?
I must have done something to my installation of OS X. When I go to create a new folder, it automatically creates the folder with the name "untitled folder". The problem is, the name isn't selected. Normally, when you create a new folder, you can just type the name immediately. For me, I have to create the new folder, then click on the name to select the text and then type it. Also, when I do go to type in the new name, the text "untitled folder" doesn't disappear. I just type over it.

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAnyway I got the flashing folder error, booted from the snow leopard install disc and want to get a dmg of my hd so I can recover files if possible. I get Input/output error while trying to create the dmg. I get invalid b tree node size error when verifying and I can't repair it.
Is there another way to backup at this point or salvage files without buying/using other software? I'm at college so resources are limited. I don't have a backup so it's fairly important that I can somehow recover files. Also I've tried resetting PRAM with no luck. Is the drive busted beyond repair or is there something I can do?
I am getting hung up on creating a new ftp folder in OS X 10.5.8 in order to set up a child theme. Once I am in the ftp file listing <Go - Connect to Server> I'm not sure how to create the folder after that. I've tried right clicking (external mouse). Newer Macs seem to have an Add Folder button at the top of the page.

What sucks is that lets say i protect a folder with a password, (command i and then sharing...) well it uses the same password that i log in with when i start up the computer, it doesnt let me choose a different one. So lets say someone finds out my log in password and logs in, then they can access that folder with the same password. Very very stupid that you can't choose different passwords. Ughh the stupidest thing ever, doesnt Apple think? Man that just makes me mad. Not that im worried about anything, but just stupid design. They didnt think it thru.Unless theres a way to put in a different password for the folder than it is for the log in.??

My MacBook Air was not starting up so I sent it in for a repair. Just got a call that the logic board is corroded and there is excessive water damage. However, I have never split anything on my laptop nor has anyone else. I carry it around with me all the time. I'm creating a disk image for a school to use on all their new laptops. It's not a fresh install. There are some customizations and software that's being installed (Volume License Office, for example). One of the requests that came in from the school was to have the wireless network password already stored on the computer so students wouldn't have to ask to connect. It would "just work."
I played around in the Keychain Utility with creating an Airport password manually, but couldn't figure it out for sure. I wanted to know if anyone has procedure they use to do this and if you could enlighten me on how to do this.
I feel like it shouldn't be too hard and maybe I'm missing something very, very simple.
The only caveat is that there are multiple accounts on the laptop (Administrator, Teacher, Student). Ideally the wireless password would exist for all these accounts and automatically connect upon startup/login.
In mid-May I purchased a new iMac. It appears I didn't create an Admin password, and now I need one to install certain programes.
